Cool video on explaining how the pre-trip inspection works. I have big questions for you how to become a school bus driver in ohio also how does the training process work how long is the training for classroom training and behind the wheel training also how long is the background check process is. Do they pays for cdl Learners permit and cdl Learners and how many times can you take the test and if a person fail will they pay for it again? My second question is can people have options to work with instructor individually one on one training for example behind the will wheel and pre trip inspection how long does that last with training due to i remember I went to Driving School i had a amazing opportunity to work with instructor individually one on one a month later i end up passing on the first try getting my driver's license hopefully that will be the same thing with training on a school bus due to that definitely help me a lot with 101 training. Also how to find school bus District in Ohio area due to I can't even find any it's very hard but i heard their requirements is a little bit strict on people have to have their driver's license for at least 3 years but thank God i have a clean background record with no points on my license I wonder when is the best time to start to apply for school bus companies can it be in August or September or October? Hopefully you can answer all my questions I will definitely appreciate this for sure 👍
Hi!! First you have to aply to a district and go through the interview process. If they want to hire you, that district will set you up with the classroom portion (theory) which is 15 hours = 5 days, 3 hrs per day. They will also have their OBI (On Board/Bus Instructor) do your training .... BTW, Pre Trip and manueverability (Road & Range). The hands on training depends on you = how well you pick up on the pre trip, driving, pick ups and drop offs, RRs and maneuvers. It is typically 30 - 40 hours. You will need a background check, drug test and physical. The background check could take up to 30 days prior. The physical and drug test are set up by the district. Not all districts will pay for or reimburse for Background, permit, test or license, but some do. Check with the district that you are applying to. OBIs are assigned by the district and must be paid by that district. OBIs are not allowed to take payment from a trainee / student, therefore they must work or subcontract for that district. You may get one on one with an OBI, just depends on how many people apply. Try a Google searh for school districts in Ohio, there are over 700 ... I did a search and thats what I got as a result. Wikipedia and greatschools.org could be a good start. You can apply now, many OBIs will train though the Summer. There are also contractors such as Petermann and Community Bus that hire, train and employ drivers. Some districts use contractors and they would let you know if that was the case. I hope I've answered your questions, and if I may ask, where are you at in Ohio?
Thanks so much for your response back and information I really really appreciate it well lm from Euclid in ohio. I always wanted to drive school buses but lm looking for a school district or school bus companies that can help me become a school bus driver and help me get my cdl license while training with them and helping me pay for my CDL license due to during the pandemic I last everything unfortunately it will make a difference for me to become a school bus due to it get worse after the pandemic so I hope and pray they will hire me on top of that I have clean background record with no points on my license I always wanted to work help out the community I'll be seeing kids walking from school in snow days in my area it make me so so sad
@user-so3cn8dh6w you're welcome. You would be located in what we call the North Region .... lots of great people up that way 😊 Check with the school district that you live in to get more info. Best of luck to you!! 🚍❤️🚍
The airbrake in this video sounds like that this is a 2015 Thomas C2. 151042 sounded like that in my district.
That crossing had a stop sign, when I rode the bus there was no radio and all buses stopped at all rail road crossings.
That crossing is in an industrial park area, I use it in the beginning to get them used to going through the motions. All busses still have to stop for RR crossings unless there is an EXEMPT sign posted. As far as radios go, I drove for 20 years without one. It was up to the people who placed the order wether it had one or not.
@@lauriewoolley2794 what do you mean exempt sign?
@rickchapman9232 an EXEMPT sign signifies that the tracks are dead (no longer used) so school buses do not need to stop.
We have a winner !!!!!
I disagree with buses stopping before a train crossing. If by some chance that they didn't see the train coming, they're at a snails pace pulling out and it becomes a target. If it's a valid working train crossing, keep moving. If it's in the middle of nowhere and no warning signs, by all means, slow down some, look, and keep rolling! I imagine that there are a lot of accidents with people running into the rear of buses.
Been a conductor for 21 years, none of us want to hit a school bus so thank you for stopping.
Only in Ohio
Now I know why it takes so long for a bus to cross the tracks.
Most of the drivers in my area wear yellow reflective vests. For what it’s worth I find it a bonus. You sound like a great teacher.
Contractors?
Someone is taking their school bus driving test.
Not yet, he's only been with me a few times .... he will get though
Pre Service pre trip has not changed, you have to mention all of this for your certificate. CDL is where you would mention less than what I'm showing here. I have actually missed the axle seal on the drivers side rear.
Is this the most updated version ? Because I’m in training and we where told we didn’t have to mention half the stuff your saying I’m in Ohio as well
Welcome to the club!!! Where are you training for?
I MISSED THE WINDSHIELD, WIPERS & WASHER AND MIRROR ADJUSTMENT.... the windshield has no cracks, stickers, or obstructions. The wipers arw flat to the windshield and not ripped. They work on all levels and the washer fliud squirts. All 7 mirrors are adjusted for me, the student mirror is not cracked and secure with screws to its mount.
I MISSED THE REAR WINDOWS .... the windows are not cracked or missing.
Great job. Very helpful
Video person doesn't do a good job showing what your talking about and stearing wheel is covering the dash board
That was awesome.
Thank you for sharing I just passed my CDL and she made me do it a little different, but I passed. I'm in OHIO also.
You're welcome .... the order has changed since I did this one. Need to update again. Congrats and good luck to you!!!
Don’t you have to check the battery compartment?
Yes
Prior to the latest change, no, you did not have to check the battery box for CDL.
Do we still go under the hood? Im in Lorain Ohio after October 1st 2023 they made more changes to the pre trip!
Yes, the changes went into effect on Oct 2nd. You still have to go under the hood to check the fluids, hoses steering parts, brake hose and brake contaminates.
Thank you for this video! It's the best one I've been able to find and it's been very helpful. I've watched it so many times I feel like we're friends! 😊
You're welcome
Is this just for Ohio or could it technically be for all states Either way I’m going to have to cover everything you just did
I specify Ohio as that is where I am. It may work for other states, but I am not for sure on that.
Laurie, I am a Class A instructor near Cleveland, Ohio and I'm trying to get my school bus endorsement so I can become a licensed examiner. I have finished my classroom portion. Are you able to help me with the road / range portions for ELDT ?
Are you referring to being an OBI?
Hi Terry, I would need a school bus to help you with the road and range portion. As I am not associated with a district or contractor in your area I would not have a bus available. Try contacting a district or contractor near you. The Pre Service Instructor whose class you went to may even be of assistance to you.
Is this the whole inspection, exactly what is to be said?
Yes for Ohio CDL .... there is more to the pre trip for the Pre Service certificate
Great job, thank you for sharing.
You're welcome
Poor job of demonstrating parts by tapping and moving the pointer too rapidly and ahead of the camera man, in some areas that are already not in view or behind another part and not visible to the viewer on the under the hood portion and demonstrating in a rapid rate
Need seat belt on, check spring brake in reverse also
Only have to show that the seat belt is adjustable and locks in. Spring brake can be checked in D or R, just need to show that it holds.
What about back up lights and beeper?
@animalsx5 those are only done when we test for our certificate, we don't have to do those for CDL.
did i miss the battery and electrical boxs and shifts smoothly in all gears and the back up beeper or had that changed? do we need to check the emergency cards ,radio, up to date sticker ? sorry just trying to cut out unnecessary words / time
The things you mentioned are not part of the CDL test, they are part of the Pre Service certification test for Ohio.
Air loss test are first
Yes, safe start and air brake tests are. You can mention the ABS light at that point as well. The way I have done it in the video is acceptable for NEO CDL Test Center in North Jackson, Ohio.
Nice work, remember to secure your bus and pull that parking brake
Im looking for school CDL around Ohio ?
Im looking for school CDL around Ohio ?
Get your permit then find a school district or trucking school.
Is the only change is that the brake test are first now
No, you must sound your horn at the end of the brake test. You will have 2 attempts to get the tests right, if you don't then you do not do the rest of the pre trip. After that, the other change for a school bus is that we inspect the door side and underneath instead of the drivers side .... there is only the stop arm on the drivers side.
Thanks so much
@@hotmessmamashantisfamily6252 you're welcome

Thank you

Very nice video Ms. Laurie.
This was a great video Ms. Laurie.
Thank you!
Hopefully your bus 19 will still last a long time for you. Yeah I seen some of the bottom areas of the bus a rust color according to your video you was showing. Best wishes from neighboring Portage County.
Is this bus a international model?
No, Thomas C2
The hardest part is to find a reference point. When to cut my tires. So it goes in the box properly. If you have any tips I would appreciated it. Thanks for taking time putting this video out I appreciate it.
Position yourself a little more than half way between the box you are backing in to and the 50 ft boundary. For me, I stop when I can see the first cone in the row closest to me right about the middle of the mirror close to the outside edge. I start to turn the wheel to left a little at a time. Keep watching the left side tires and cutting the wheel left unyil you can see that you will not touch the cone. Start checking the right mirrors for the cones on that to show up. Straighten out the wheel a little more everytime you spot the next cone until you are straight in the box. It is supposed to be a 40 ft box, so once the front cones can be seen in the crossovers stop, set the brake, go to N and get out to look. That way you can see where you are in the box and can back or pull up a little more if you need to.
In Ohio how many can you miss out of how many?
13 out of 66 for CDL .... and 10 out of around 90 things for Ohio Pre Service Certificate. CDL is one point each in 30 minutes or less and Pre Service is 2 points without a time limit.
@@lauriewoolley2794 what is the pre service certificate ands how is that different from Passing the CDL pre trip
@@Midwest51344 the Pre Service Certificate is what we need in Ohio to drive a school bus. It has about 30 more parts to inspect than the CDL test. We have to renew it every 6 yrs by passing a pre trip inspection and driving evaluation.
@@lauriewoolley2794 thanks
Good job
You did not check the battery box
It's not required for CDL
Ok. I guess I'm going with OBI test. I also caught no mention of the current OSP sticker. You're video is very helpful
@@angiearbogast5424 the OSHP sticker is also not part of CDL. Good catches though !! 👍👍👍
How many feet will you get at DMV road test? For the parallel parking
Length of vehicle + 15 ft
@@lauriewoolley2794 you think that's enough room?

Hello Laurie, your pre-trip inspection video is excellent!! Thank u for doing it👍 would u consider doing one on the chug test, procedures for loading & unloading students, & procedure if your bus breaks down or theirs an accident.?
Hi Susan, thank you and you're welcome. I will definitely try for the loading, unloading, and RR for Ohio. Not sure what you mean by chug test, and the procedure for breakdown or accident will vary by district. My previous district used signals and codes over the radio to report those things. The district that I am with now, does not use either.
The chug-test is the airbrake check where u do not have brake on, & pump out air til emergency break pops.
@@susanslagle-cochran7505 the CDL brake test is in the video already.
Do we really have to call whether the glass is clean or not? They have us doing that here.
I tell my trainees to mention it, but we can all agree that the windows and lights will only be clean for so long. At least by saying it, it shows that you are looking at them.
