In June 2024 some of us were invited to attend a logging demonstration at Yale Forest, which is located in northeastern Connecticut. Yale Forest encompasses nearly 8000 acres of preserved land used by Yale University as their school of forestry. It is truly one of the gems of Connecticut and beyond. We were grateful to be invited!

One of the most important aspects of training is to make your animals safe. This means controlling their natural instinct to be scared and putting them in uncomfortable situations so they get used to them.

Using Traditional Dirt Scoops #ox #oxen #farming #excavation
zhlédnutí 561Před 3 měsíci
Before mechanized equipment, much of the digging for seller holes, ponds, and other items was done by teams of oxen, horses or single animals pulling a scoop. In April of 2024 several of us brought some antique scoops to Eastern Connecticut to dig out a wash and fill in some ruts and a cornfield.

Great video man beautiful job.
Awesome!
I’d like to do this some time
Bravo de bien s'occuper des animaux 👏👏 ❤❤
Hah! Neat!
What difference between horse and ox if compare a strong?
How can to compare the oxes strong and horses strong? Who is more strong horse or ox?
I’d like to know, would you use an intact bull for an ox if you raised it from a calf?
It’s been done. The results have ranged from no problem, to the teamster being killed…literally. It’s always safer to work with a steer.
Good pointers. Thank you for sharing.🐂🐂
Its always nice to see a team being treated well while working.
I wanted to thank you for your video i find them so helpful as i have been training a team of jerseys calf their 2 months old now and it is mostly by watching videos like yours and with book that i am getting by since here in Quebec i can’t find anyone that work with oxen !
Glad to help!
Another valuable common-sense segment on training calves; and fun to watch too. Adorable calves, handsome drivers.
AWESOME cheers from germany!
awesome video as always, the cool thing about oxen back in the day one was able to start with spring plowing far earlier then today with tractors.
Who is more strong the ox or horse?
I just got one of your old videos recommended where you picked up 2 Devon calves are these the same pair? Awesome work
Yes they are.
Great video! I love seeing people keeping these old skills around and showing how it was done. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
What is required to train steers to be oxen? i mean bread of cattle or traits. This is something I've been interested in for a while. I recently bought a pair of weened steer calves. they are both 1/2 jersey, 1/4 holstien and one is 1/4 angus, the other is 1/4 hereford.
@jensenfamilyhomestead4278 we have a whole series on training calves. The rest of the parts are linked in the description of this video. Training Calves for Oxen Part 1 (Selecting Your Team; Breed & Age) czcams.com/video/wstB8KU9FBY/video.html
Were the scoops always flat or are there variations with other shapes or profiles? I am intrigued. This looks like a good way to dig ditches or cut in trails.
All of the ones that I’ve seen are flat or slightly concave bottoms. I would imagine there’s some other types, but that’s what I am used to. They work extremely well, better than people would think.

😂😂 bien es como dicen , la unión hace la fuerza.😂😂😊😊😊😊
Very interesting to see.
Where did you get that little spreader? I need one just like it!
You have an incredible handle on that pair! Really neat to see people using the old ways.
👍🏻
❤
I have on that was made and used by my grand father.
I have like oxen. Name manoj vasanta manjare. District yavatmal, state Maharashtra, pusad city
What size is your lumber ? X? X?
What if you give them a little treat if they do the right thing, and pet them and say “atta boy”? They won’t like that?
Positive reinforcement with letting and praising works well. Treats don’t because then they’re constantly bugging you for a treat and get distracted.
Thank you for sharing.🐂🐂

I just subscribed, I got a 3/4 jersey 1/4 holstein bull calf I want to train for work, he’s 3 weeks old right now, I’ve never trained or done draft work with cattle before
Thanks!
Very nice looking team. Thank you for sharing.
Very interesting training techniques. Thank you for sharing.🐂🐂
Glad you enjoyed it
Real pleasure to watch, steady, willing, responsive, and trustworthy.
Thanks!
How can you compare oxen to horses
Would like to see more of every day farm work
Excellent. I’ve been needing something like this.
Here is a better how to. Basic steps to making an ox yoke czcams.com/video/jeLsV4zpIuI/video.html
Really useful video as im getting ready to get my first two jersey bull calf in spring i was wondering do you put them on pasture with other animals later on or will they stay tied up in their area separate from the other animals ? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience !
Looks nice and peaceful.
Great video. I like the music you play.
Equally Yoked
Thank for sharing this. Can you train a team of oxen to work them with just one person?
Yes, a well trained team will work with one person operating the implement and driving the team using voice commands.
Thanks for another very helpful video. We will get our Dexters in early spring and I try to learn as much as possible until then.
Great video. Ive been working with cattle (working cattle and milk cows) for about 40 years and hope to be doing it another 10 or 20. This seem like real solid, balanced information.
Great tutorial. I wonder if a hazelnut rod could work too. Or is that too thin and flexible?
Great tutorial thank you !
