How Railroad Couplers, Knuckles and Brakes work (previously private June 2022, DJSTRAINS)
Formerly a behind the scenes for patreon only, this is some random clips before I show how railroad knuckles and brakes work. This was unscripted and spontaneous, so I mispronounced some things and my comment about engine hoses was about SOME of the engines air hoses.

Always a great production that’s inspiring and motivating along with your invigorating style.
I appreciate that!
I really want to be a conductor for CSX or Norfolk southern after high school but I'm nervous about the training
Training is easy. The lifestyle and culture is difficult. Being on call 24 hours a day is mentally exhausting. You will soon know more than your boss but the will Never listen to you. Learn stoicism, and emotional intelligence. It’s the two things that have helped me in recent years. Trust me.
Thanks for the info and I just don't get why people are always trying discourage me on social media and it can get very irritating I've always wanted to work for the railroad every since I was like 2 years old
Trains or Dance? Dance!
Great monument to those who worked, suffered, and sometimes died in this industry
Now in 2024 there is CSX Heritage units and a lot
The P&LE one is my favorite
I really think that I might have early onset dementia. I can't believe I spent a fortune when this is an elegant and effective solution. For protection you could wire in a timer that auto cuts power to the output after 0.75 seconds.
Thanks, DJ, this is a great Layout with details everyone would like with a home base layout. Thanks for sharing this layout with us. Mike HO from Australia
Very welcome
The Shell Plant in Monaca,Pa next to the Rive? Is that the plastic cracking plant?
Yes. It’s a customer that I personally service with CSX when working the local
@@djstrains I drive by the plant everyday
That looks pretty cool I like that I would do the same thing with my Ho scale model railroad my layout is going with UP and BNSF
Go for it!
@@djstrains i think I will I need to buy the woodland scenics track painter to weathered the track
It takes a lot of courage to get on stage and perform in front of people. Great job 😊
That's a challenging shove up that trestle grade, that many loads---even with locos that have sand on a dry day for EMD SW1500's.
For those who pipedream, that line previously linked Columbus and Pittsburgh. Were high speed rail to eventually become a reality, the line might be reconstituted.
Fantastic insights from real world engineers. Thanks so much * subscribed *
Welcome aboard!
@@djstrains Thanks...
I lived on the far side 8n the hillside all my life if they didn't bang I could not sleep
I know Model Railroader Magazine did do a serries on railroads and produce (food industry) and railroads and meat packing (food industry) and railroads and the automotive manufacturing industry, but besides Pixel Depot with his GM auto assembly plant and you talking about it right now and a few others I don't know why more people don't model food and automotive manufacturing, both have huge potential. I think just my opinion is some of it is just academic a lot of people just see coal trains and gravel and scrap metal trains, unless you work in the food industry (which I do) you wouldn't even think of it. But if your into operations, unlike some scrap yard that gets 1 car every so often a big frozen foods manufacturing plant could be a daily customer food places generally run 24/7 almost any major food distribution warehouse, beer/beverage distribution warehouse or food/beverage manufacturing plant is going to be a busy place. US Foods in Greensburgh runs 24 hours a day they pack trailers at night time they run double trailers at night time as well to there drop yards and they restock the warehouse and pick orders during the day and evening and during the day the trucks are making deliveries, wouldn't take them very long all the customers they have to go through a box car of produce. There own fleet of semi trucks is probably close to 100 trucks so if they run 100 truck loads a day they would need a lot of switiching out depending how fast they can get there loads. I like your approach especially when you talk about in the real world what kind of locomotive it is and all that kind of thing really isn't important they assign power to trains at central command and that's that. I mean after all model railroading and stuff is all academics in the real world there is a job to do and customers complaining get it done and get it done right no body cares about minutia there is a job to do get it done customers are complaining.
Nailed it!
13:20 - industry in nowhere. Reminds me of the new hospital built outside Pembury, near Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, around 2011. No thought of where staff lived or travelled from, no shops, nothing to do in break times or buy stuff on way home. Disastrous. They couldn't get staff for it.
Coal and Gravel boring food industry is way more fun. Box cars, covered hoppers, tank cars, refrigerator cars. Places can be busy too.
US Foods in Greensburg, PA?
Yes!!
@@djstrains Cool I know exactly where that is, I work for a competitor of theirs in Imperial, PA company I work for doesn't use the railroad for anything as far as I know. Does US Food get a lot from you guys?
I work for CSX, but we interchange with the SWP Railroad who services them.
Currently modeling the NS portion of the line in HO, would love to expand to the yard and the interchange with YorkRail too. Great shots, DJ! Very helpful!
Sounds great!
"The RR Bachata King"........Awesome DJ!!!! -Alex....The EL Guy

Best of luck!
Again, you are an inspiration to us! “If You Can Do It, I/We Can Do It”!!!
I’m not much of a dancer, but prior to my wedding in 1986, my fiancee insisted I take Ballroom Dance Lessons. To increase my interest, she sweetened the pot by agreeing to my purchase of a trailer I wanted for my fishing boat. Our next door neighbors also took the lessons and my wife had them drive each night for the 6 weeks so I couldn’t drive home lol😂! I enjoyed the lessons and didn’t feel so clumsy at our wedding reception.
Great To See You! By the way, MUST SEE KEN POZNANIACK’S LAYOUT I THINK EVERYONE WILL BE IMPRESSED WITH SOME OF HIS INDUSTRIES HE HAS MODELED I am relatively new to your Channel DJ. You are a Credit to the Hobby! I am sorry that you have decided to cut back and/or leave CZcams! I understand the Haters that are out there and for every one of them, it takes 5-6 people with positive input to make up for them. In my profession, Law Enforcement, we too have had our share of Haters. I hope to meet you in Altoona at the N Scale Weekend, September 14 & 15, 2024 at the Blair County Convention Center. It’s so interesting to hear about the profession from a person Walking in the Shoes & living the job!
Will you be at the N Scale Enthusiast Convention June 20, 21 ,22 in Bethlehem at the Wind Creek Casino. Should be a great event.
Not this year, sorry
It's simply an amazing layout it's really incredible thank God the United States of America has this man in this layout within its borders, thank you sir!
Couldn't agree more!
16:15 would expect to see a an extra switch and short dead-end siding just below the Grain Silo road crossing-to protect the mainline from runaways (and stash the shunting tractor). Or would the US arrangement just have a derailer here?
You know what is crazy about railroads nowadays is that we “work off the main” at so many small industries, regardless of how much it delays our mainline trains. Even though I still see abandoned track where it would have been beneficial to leave it intact for safety or switching like you suggested.
This intro had me spit out my coffee! Lmao
Mission accomplished
Beautiful layout! Thanks for sharing!!
Nice
Thanks
Great tip! I used to save all the extra pieces from model car kits as a kid, and I would use the pieces to modify boring ones. Building only the visible faces and saving the "extra" pieces is a fantastic way to get spare parts for scratchbuilding or kitbashing!
Back in the day (60's & 70's) we would block off sections of track by using a plastic rail joiner on the +rail and would add a toggle switch wired to one of the rail joiners with in that isolated sections. That way, with a flip of switch you could cut power to that section. If you were using more than 1 controller you could use a SPDT (single pole-double throw) or a DPDT (double pole-double throw) toggle switch depending how you were going to use that section. Dead Center is no power, and depending if the switch is up or down determines which controller provides power to that section of track. I know it sound like complicated wiring, but it really wasn't.
Did you watch this video?
@@djstrains Yes I did. What prompted the comment was how you had to hold one engine to keep it from moving with the other. My comment was NOT meant to be a "dis" / complaint. If it came off that way, I'm sorry. The comment was just a 73 yr old geezer reminiscing how things were before the hobby became computerized. :) I enjoyed the video because you showed that an interchange operation need not be as complicated to perform as it may appear at first. You do a great job at explaining different aspects of layouts and operations. I'm the type that still prefers manual switches and manually uncoupling. Adds an air of realism because it takes time for someone to throw a switch or uncouple a car.
Good for you DJ 🤙🏾 very cool and inspiring us to do different things. Enjoy! And thank you for the update
I appreciate it!
What did you use to make that dirt/mud look?
I always enjoyed using sculptamold. I also use acrylic paint
This is a bad idea. If someone does not know to release the “handle”, i assure you it will damage your Kato turnout.
I’m done making videos. Go watch someone else’s or make your own.
Hi DJ, great video. Question- do you know what type of signaling (if at all) URR uses?? I know there are some segments they’ve dropped signaling but assume they still do on the mainline runs. Thanks!
Basically their own. At one time they had a few PRR signals.
Good on you... I envy the ability....
Thats great that your enjoying it . I'll be 54 also in a couple months. I've decided to drag out my guitar and learn to play something other than row, row, row your boat😂 Now lets get back to the TRAINS!
Trains aren’t on my agenda in 2024. I am focused on my daughter who graduated today, starting a new dance team with performance in Toronto in October, and moving in with my fiancé this year. I needed to step away from the hobby for a while. Thanks for understanding
Live you life love you family it can all be taken from you from in a minute. Hope everything is going good with you.

Hey DJ, OMG you’re a multitude of talents, great job!!! So, do you get a chance to practice in your cab, on long runs??? 😂 Your conductor could help 👍🏻 Ron

My wife got me into modern line dancing several years ago. I swore that if anyone laughed, I was "outta there". I ended up loving it so much we continued until our health made it too difficult. I sure miss it. Great for the body and the mind! Nice job, and dancing in front of an audience - that's something I could NOT do. Kudos to you all!
It’s actually the most supportive community I’ve ever been involved with.
You made her look good awesome
Good stuff, DJ! Glad you’re having fun. That’s what it’s all about.

Congratulations on staying young. Did you plan this to meet hot, athletic, and talented women? You can tell me, I won’t tell anyone? Lol.
lol So I was always a dancer but new to salsa in December 2022. I did meet my fiancée on her first night last May.
HI DJ, In anything you do, always remember to try and have fun. You are correct about age and at 63, age does not stop me. But sadly arthritis pain does slow me down a lot. I have good days and I have bad days. When the bad days start out numbering the good days, Is when I'll start talking to the doctors at GPOA about my next options. OK DJ, stay safe and keep having fun. Cheers, Rich S.
