The only problem with this technique is that it's not the most practical for explosive training or narcotics detection. The dog become aggressive on odor, which can be corrected and extinguished but they tend to revert to their initial training due to the law of primacy. There are definitely more efficient and effective focused training methods available, but this is still good stuff To take some ideas from. Thank you

Incredible how all these comments saw a single step of a series of training, and because they do not realise there's steps behind and steps forward , criticise it as if thats the only thing that should be done. This is not a complete rattlesnake avoidance schedule people! It's only a step in a series of steps to get the complete behavior (dog avoids the snake) . way too many people didn't get this. Way too many people made mad assumptions (like the guy who did not consider that a trigger - the yellow circle- will be transfered to the snake as the trigger, or that cues like recall can be faded out of a behavior.. so the dog wont need the cue in the complete behavior). None of these people being trainers, all commented as if they knew absolutely about what they were talking about. Incredible. Must be the Dunning-Kruger effect in full force here!

My dog would be barking and losing his mind the whole time. I dream of the day he could participate in a group class. I've been working on his reactivity at much greater distances than this, but jeesh, if these dogs are reactive, how the heck are they able to even be in the same room together? What happened before they were all sitting calmly minding their own business to get them to the point we see here?

  • @saarlooswolfhund6237

Thank you for excellent guidance. I had a different tactic with Peon, the Coonhound with Savoir-Faire, who loved to be swung in circles by a good, strong stick: I held a second stick behind my back. 'Wouldn't you rather have this oner?' Of course, he always did! HJe was pretty well-behaved in the city, for my very-first dog as an adult. I learn so much from each dog and cat who comes to me. I've got a 7yo Bengal girl who's recovering from being bullied for most of her first 3y by a well-interbonded pair of dogs who had all workday to terrorize her. We're doing much better now and I wonder if we dare add a dog to our family. Lassie died of pancreatic cancer at ~17, two months after Safari Kitty came to us. Kitty was still hiding during most of that time, but she had no problem with our big, gentle, sweet smooth collie, who had been a breeder before we met. Lassie had to learn everything (except kennel) when I got her at 5y, still woozy from spay, and hanging boobs drying up and scruffy, untended coat. Although she had to learn everything, she was smart, sweet, serene, and a joy to watch opening up to life in the noisy, frenetic city.
