    This vid brought a smile to my face and nearly a year to my eye, born in Rochdale 1952, my mum was an ushered in the regal cinemas. ( free entry and ice cream ). great days, moved away for work but back at Christmas with family, got mugged outside tiffanys, all in the past now

    I joined in the early '70's. It was the era of bullswool and the 303. Loved every minute of it . I would recommend it to any young lad .

    I fired one of those, or similar back in 1972 in sennelarger, Germany. I recall it had quite a kick to it, and temporarily deafened us. We also had the SLR back then with 7.62, which seemed a lot better than the current army rifle.

    Spent a few years in the FCA in the early 90s up in finner had hoped to get into the PDF but for some reason got turned down,was totally pissed off after that considering time and energy and back then my own money buying better kit,anyhow I went further afield to foreign shores and amazingly was excepted into a foreign army,I'm happy they did turn me down for I spent 15 years there and experienced a hell of a lot more than I would've done in the defence forces still saddens a little today my own country didn't want me but sure se la vie!

      It Was Hard To Get into the PDF That Time grey headed Corporals with big bellies waiting for Their 21 years a lot of lads headed for the Irish guards and the Royal Irish and Kept it Quiet they just wanted to Soldier on and enjoy military life.

      @@darrenfarrell-bn2cb The brits weren’t an option for me,no issue with them doing so it was just a family thing,hence my exclusion from the PDF family history,and @darrenfarrell-bn2cb you’re so on the ball about the pot bellied wasters counting down there 21!! I had plenty of Ops and real world experience which I wouldn’t have come close to in the DF,I got a huge opportunity when I was leaving La Legion,working still for a totally different branch of the French security apparatus,I retired two years ago and I live now between Ireland and the South of France,not bad for a wee lad rejected by his own!! 🫡 MORE MAJORUM🇫🇷🫡

    Served with 9th Battery 3FAR in Templemore from 89 to 91, I did 3 years, regret not staying in or joining the army, Fired 25 pounders in the Glen, we switched from Lee Enfield to FN-FAL, Did a guard of honour for President Hillery, fired rifles on the range, manouvers around the Devils bit mountain, had a great time but a job pulled me away eventually. Great time we had, my dad was in the Congo.

    Look at the date. No 20mm training rounds for the 84 then or ever. The training adapter fired a unique 6.5mm Swedish round or a 7.62mm round. I trained on it in the 23 rd Battalion and we fired a TPTP round in live firing. Great fun.

    Ah the FCA or as we called it The Free Clothes Association and the Brilliant Lee-Enfield 303 and the FN FAL great spotter rifle I loved the FCA the 11th Motor Squadron. Kickham Barracks Clonmel sadly closed now great video mate thank you.

      @@72mossy No but here is some info I live at the Back of it in 1999 I did disco in barracks for a friend of mine who now is a Garda you could not meet nicer there and I took a shortcut home over the wall as my back garden is only feet away anyway I fell and broke my neck in 2 places c4 c5

      He more than Likely knew my Dad and Grandfather and Uncle My dad was called Tommy Fitz or Fitzzy for Fitzgerald my dad was in the Congo in the 60s I was Born in 65.

    really not even use of dummy 9mm ammo ? in the barrel - thats not realistic -the whole exersise look like training teenagers but I guess thats how its done there

      You must have never served a day, they are Irish Army Reserves. They are all over 17 plus this their first day training on the 84. They don't use 9mm rounds ike the Yanks do, also they would be on an artillery range, they are clearly in a Barracks.

    I enjoyed this film of the good old day's, I did my bit with the TA in the UK, meeting many Irish people serving in TA too. We are all vet's now! (how did that happen) and the reunions are a fantastic time, 60 year olds acting like there 19! P.S. The London Irish Rifles did have a great bar. Friday night was band practice night. There have been massive cutbacks since the end of the cold war in man training days and It's near bloody impossible to join today 2021. It's got so complicated to get through a modern civvie influenced recruiting process. Ditto the regular's to (all 3 arms) Anyway in the Times yesterday 09/02/21 it said the UK reserve forces may not exist in 2026.

    I lived in Rochdale 1964 to 1968 as a child. My Dad was manager of Thomas Cook on Drake Street and we lived on Weston Avenue. Nice video and so much kinder to the Town than so many commentaries on it these days.

    All the equipment vehicles, weapons etc seemed to be British made. Did you buy from the British, or did they give it to the Irish Reserve ?

      The armour is french and swedish, transport english made (land rovers, leylands), the light infantry weapons from England, Belgium and Sweden(lee Enfield rifle, FN MAG MG, gustav SMG), Artillery weapons from France(Brandt 120mm mortar) So a diverse source of hardware :-)

    I remember walking through rochdale when I was about 8 (I was born in 1980 BTY) and I saw the McDonald’s sign put up as they were building the McDonald’s, and I said to my mum ‘look mum, McDonald’s is coming to rochdale’ and she said ‘don’t be so stupid’ and gave me a clip round the ear-ole. But I was proved right a few weeks later when it opened. I miss you mum x x

      I really like that gun, dude! I got me one last summer- a DSA-58, made in the US. Fine rifle! Why did they ever have to change to the Steyr? Why did the Brits ever change to the L85?

      @@lsnows unfortunately we all had to change to the nato 5.56mm round. It definitely didn't have the punch of the 7.62mm. But the same thing happened to the 303 witch we used on the bren.

      @Cmndr Roy Fokker True. Mine doesn't have full auto, That said, it takes some muscle and some practice to keep the old girl under control on full. Say, did you guys in the Irish Army use the FN MAG? Another question: did you guys use the British or Belgian FAL?

      @@gdronfield Thank you George I was born in Alton Hampshire when i was three my Mother and Father moved back to Rochdale as thats were they was born and my Sister Christine was born there to Its nice have grown up in Rochdale in my time of history (time line 1962 - 1988) Rochdale like many other towns where clean people went out of their way to help each other but now phew thats not happening, but great memories last forever hope you had a wonderful hoiladay with your family 🙂

    Served in Longford from 1981 - 89, Lee Enfield rifles, green boiler suits, no women & leaky boots - I would go back in a heartbeat. They were better equiped in 1997 than us.
