Would like to hear you talk about pruning and hard pruning caudex plants.
Wow
Superb collection! I have a handful of Fockea Edulis plants, my question is how to identify male vs. female flowers and how to hand pollinate them? There's nothing on CZcams or the Internet that I could find. Maybe you next video? Thanks
Yes, great question and good idea! Thank you! The flowers usually appear in summer, have thick narrow green calyces and white petals. It’s difficult to distinguish between male and female flowers as the look so similar. The male flowers have an array of fine stamens with very small anthers that contain the pollen. The female flowers have a stigma surrounded by what look like anthers… but are not. Hope that makes sense. Hopefully we can do a video about it when we see some examples in the garden. Have a wonderful day!
@@PotsbyRobert Cool, Thank You. 🤙🏼
I'd love to see a full tour of all your plants . . . just an idea for another video or series of videos! : )
Thank you! We are working on it 🙏🏼
Excellent advice about not choosing a pot that overpowers the plant. The plant is the star! Gorgeous pots and beautiful plants - what more could you want? 😊
Exactly! Thanks so much, appreciate it!
Amazing! Thank you so much!
Do you have a cctv at your home 😂😂
😂😂
What is your soil mix for pachypodiums
Check out our newest video 🙂 we talk about the soil mixture and more!
Love ❤️ it .
Thank you!
Thank you!
Robert is an expert in staging and caudiciform plants. He hand-makes beautiful pots as well. He is a master!
Where are you guys based and where do you get all your soils and toppings from?
Hi there, we are in Southern California in Los Angeles. My dad uses cactus & succulent soil with 60% pumice and the topping is finely crushed lava rock.
@@PotsbyRobert Thank you , love the channel
2:51 Love this video, it made me laugh! 😂
"Very, very old" Those huge caudiciforms are all illegally field collected plants decades old. ALL OF THEM. Where did you get them from? Not Lowes, that's for sure.
Hi there, of course they are not illegal and I do not associate or agree with any illegal plant activity whatsoever. I would never purchase a poached specimen and would never be a part of that. They were either grown from seed from a grower or collector that I bought from or were from a nursery. And also there are so many places to purchase rare plants if you know where to go in the plant community besides Lowe’s...it’s more about the connections you have to be able to find what you’re looking for. I hope this answers any concern you have with this subject. Furthermore, please consider that there is a way to respectfully ask a question without making such a negative impression. We would appreciate it if any further comments are made with respect as we hope to only keep a positive and polite plant community here. Thank you and have a nice day. 💚
I’ve seen webbing on a couple of the plants including the pony tail palm. Is it regular spider webs?
Hi there. Yes, those are spiderwebs, they’re very abundant this time of year and persistent, but they don’t harm the plant in anyway.
Hi what is the mixture of soil is Robert using?
Hello, he uses cactus mix and adds 50 to 60% pumice for significantly improved drainage. Thanks for the question!
@@PotsbyRobert can we use vermiculite?
My dad’s response is…”I would not recommend vermiculite as it is porous and will retain moisture which is contraindicated for succulents. Perlite is a good substitute for pumice.” Hope that helps!
Yeah, I remember this video! That Pony Tail totally deserves a spotlight. What a beauty! I love your caudex collection as well as the pots you create. I am thinking of taking a pottery class to get started and make my own pots for my plants and caudexes. Well done! I am excited cause I recently got two Pony Tails and they are so pretty. I hope I don't kill them. I think they prefer the outdoors.
Thanks so much, appreciate the comment and good luck with your pottery venture and also with your new ponytail palms.
@@PotsbyRobert thanks so much!

Appreciate the video. I have the same pachypodium and it does flower in the spring time. Just an added bonus of a unique plant.

Great video Robert!! Great plants and awesome pots
Thank you very much 🙏🏼
Your two hobbies beautifully complement each other.
Funny how life works out that way and leads you on certain paths that end up connecting somehow. Thank you for the comment and for watching.
Great video! Always learn something new from watching your videos!
Glad to hear it! Thanks as always! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I just bought an Adenia Glauca because of this video. It will be a twig I’m sure, but maybe in 20 years it will look like yours.
Patience is the key with caudiciform specimens and the reward is so worth it. Glad to be a source of inspiration. Enjoy your plants.
Great inspiration. I did pottery for 20 years. Got out of it but now that I’m into succulents and cacti I’m thinking about starting again. No wheel this time. What glazes do you use? Thanks. Eddie.
Thanks so much. appreciate the comment and question. I use a variety of glazes, it depends on if I’m firing at a cone 10 or cone 5, I generally use 2 to 4 glazes per pot to get the color variation. I’m trying to achieve.
Another great video! I didn't realize you sell some pots too! I'll have to find a nice Mestoklema to pair with a lovely Roberts Pots pot!
Thank you! A pair you won’t regret. Enjoy finding your new plant and let us know if you’d like any help with pairing a pot with it.
Incredible collection, Robert! Thanks for the tour! I'm in love with those Mestoklema!
You and me both! Thanks!
Oh wow, I am ready to transplant my desert rose to expose more of her caudex. I didn't know that detail of not exposing it to sun yet. Thanks so much!
Glad this helped a bit and hope you find a beautiful caudex when you raise it up. Happy gardening, enjoy the day and thanks for watching.
@@PotsbyRobert thanks again! Keep making videos with the different variety of Caudexes plants please please! I love your collection and everyday I find a new variety. They are all so unique and beautiful.
Thanks so much, just saw this reply. Will do. Appreciate it!
Incredible collection! I am just starting with 6 of them. thanks for the video.

You're very welcome. Glad it was helpful.
Really like the way you have the plants displayed on the shelves!
Thanks so much. I put a lot of thought, time and effort into the display of the plants so I can clearly see each specimen. Appreciate your comment. 💚🙏🏼
@@PotsbyRobertYou've done it really well!
❤ Beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
❤ Love this collection. I amazed at how huge the gasteria are. Nice to see the Beaucarnea recurvata.
I often think back about the first succulent that caught my eye and got me into the hobby and how I stupidly lost it some 7 years ago, it was an Echinopsis 'Domino' which i thought was the cutest thing ever not having spines like the others. Eventually I went on reddit for advice as to why the plant that i had indoors was so etoliated, everyone basically told me that it needs sun because it's a cactus 'duhhh'. I live in the San Joaquin valley and I put my poor cactus outside in the sun in the middle of the scorching summer. Before i knew it, it turned completely white and pretty much got cooked going from my desk to being against a hot sunny wall. I think for me its sad because I've never really lost any other cactus other than that first one and if I didn't go online for help I'd probably still have him.
Wow wow wow! Speechless. Stunning! Just incredible!
I’m Wowed out! What a beautiful garden. He’s sooo cool. I wish I was his neighbor. I would learn a lot from him!!! Blessings. Cincinnati Ohio
