A series of dog training videos to assist you in training your own dog at home. The videos cover a variety of work including general pet dog obedience, trick training and gundog work.
Gundog exercises- Water retrieve, crossing a body of water
A lot of the time we get into the habit of always throwing retrieves onto the water for our dogs. This type of exercise is to help work on your dog marking retrieves well and also taking the shortest, most direct route to the retrieve.
This is an exercise you may find in a working test. The dog has to mark the dummy thrown on the other side of the pond, swim over the pond, pick the dummy and then return the same way it went.
This is a challenging exercise as most dogs will be tempted to try and find a way around the pond so consider this when trying out this exercise and try to use areas where it is easier for the dog to return across the water rather than going round.
Practice getting your delivery out of water where the dog brings the dummy into you rather than stopping to shake and dropping the dummy.
Start up-close to the water first and gradually build up distance as your delivery becomes more and more reliable.
You can teach your dog to shake on command after taking the retrieve from them by saying the word shake as they do it naturally, over time they then pattern this as a commanded behavior which you and request when required.

Hello - just found your channel and so happy to see a toller in UK gun dog training videos. That never happens! Where are you based? I’ve just got mine stopping on the whistle on the way out to a retrieve so I can cast in another direction. Never thought we’d get there. Would love to meet others doing the same. We are based in Warrington, Cheshire. Stop whistle away whistle is for certain the most tricky to nail but once you have it there is so many fun exercises you can do!!

Thanks Ross. This one was filmed pre microphones which we now have so any new content should be better quality sound 😊
Excellent video. I have my lab pup (11 months old now) pretty reliably stopping to a whistle blast and looking to me, but never included the sit part. I have to use hand signals or voice (if close enough for him too hear). 2 pips on the whistle for a great recall. Got to learn how to move onto the next whistle based commands now.
The International Emergency Signal of Distress is- three of anything, whistles, blasts, fires etc. I use four or five toots of the whistle for recall.

Yes we will look to do this! I struggled with drive with the dog shown in this video. Best bit of advice to get started it don’t worry about your steadiness while building drive, and don’t do too many retrieves in a session. Stick to a max of 4 in a day
I have golden retriever bitch who generally works quite well other than she has a habit of standing off 6 feet on returning from a retrieve (won’t return to heel) and chews Everything she picks up! Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 🙏 D.
The moment she starts to mouth I would try to correct it with a firm “no” or “ah-ah”. If you don’t use a placeboard in training this may be helpful as it gives the dog a target to return to (teach independently to retrieve work first) or stick to small spaces where the dog does not have the option to not return. Delivery is the one of the trickiest things to crack and there is a number of different approaches we would take depending on the dog.
Saying No/Nah don’t chew etc., has no effect! Is there anything I can get her to retrieve that she won’t want to chew/taste texture? Thanks
The idea is to keep the area of the fall the same but you move the distance with the dog. The dog becomes more reliant on the position of the dummy thrower than purely marking itself. The progression of this to blinds will take longer with the dog asking questions from the fact that you are sending the dog on its name. The trainer using white dummies are effectively training a potential anxiety problem in the dog.
Different approaches for different people. This way has worked great for all our dogs and we train with field trial champs who use this method.

That isn’t training to do marks,the dog is marking the dummy thrower.
Appreciate your point but you can see the dog loses the mark at a certain distance regardless of where the thrower is. We do play with the position of the thrower but for the purposes of the video we are trying to show the basics of the exercise for beginner dogs.

Being an American ive become very interested in the British way of training gun dogs. It’s a quiet different program. I like it. What I don’t like is all the puppy mill kennels here selling “British” Labradors with FTch 5 generations back in their pedigrees for 5k. I definitely see an enormous difference in style and temperament in British dogs though. Hopefully one day I can get on a plane and see it first hand.
I own a NSDTR and have looked at the American and Canadian training types and tests and it's fascinating how training can vary through the world. It's also lovely to see how these retrieving breeds can apply themselves to work in a manner of different ways. The Labradors especially being very trainable and versatile dogs! Unfortunately puppy mills in any county exploit any avenue they can which is a shame for those who get taken advantage of :( Abi, Imperial Dog Training

Absolutely, very different dogs with different motivations and drives to labs. We will do some videos with him as well as we go along! There is some of him on the channel covering trick training, but he does also do gundog work and we will film some of this too.
