GA A.T. Side Trails: Rocky Mountain Trail Loop
I started this rocky strenuous trail at Unicoi Gap where the Appalachian Trail crosses GA 75. From the highway the AT climbs 0.9 miles to the junction with the Rocky Mountain Trail. Years ago the Rocky Mountain Trail was part of the original route of the AT. Continuing on the AT instead the hiker is rewarded with excellent views at the summit of Rocky Mountain then descends 900 feet to Indian Grave Gap and FS 283 at 2.7 miles. Turning left on the road in 0.6 mile the Rocky Mountain Trailhead is reached. Follow the trail for 1.8 miles to the junction with the AT.
Excellent wildflower displays along the entire route in late April.

      Hey dieselwelds, thanks for the compliment. Actually I did check out the storm damaged areas on my favorite Smithgall Woods trail. I considered filming that section as well, but didn’t feel good about it. A week later I told a ranger at the visitor center I thought about posting the damaged section and he said, “Please, please, please don’t do that”.

      I finished the last mile in the dark walking by headlamp. Two bears 🐻🐻 came charging down the mountain past me; one in front and the other behind. A few yards further a copperhead snake lay in the trail so I had to wait for it to slither off. Didn’t see another hiker the entire time.

    • @november151956
      @november151956 Před 4 lety

      Probably one of the best kept secrets in the park. I’ve been to Newfound Gap more times than I can remember and only recently found out about the tunnel from another CZcamsr (Hiking with Braids). The tunnel is about 100 yds. past the air quality monitoring station and pullout just inside the gate on Clingmans Dome Road. Look for a short span of retaining wall and go past it into the woods. It’s steep going down the hill. The tunnel is on the right.
