My mum, girlfriend and I went to see Southampton v Ipswich in 1981 or 82 but didn't realise it was all-ticket (we were town fans living in Dorset). My mum spotted Eric at the Player's Entrance and explained our situation and he promptly returned from the dressing room with two complimentary tickets, and the third was provided by Bobby himself after a bit of banter with my mum. The game was lost 3-4 but two of the goals came from John Wark and the third from an assist by Eric. She wrote and thanked Bobby afterwards and received a very polite and heartfelt reply. They were such class...
I lived in Ipswich from 73 / 79,and I so remember watching the fa cup final from our two TVs,I lived in capel st Mary, Paul cooper lived behind my school and would come give out school sports trophies ,a lot of the other players also lived in capel and Bobby Robson’s lived close by aswell,my mum made his wife a dress for the fa cup final day,,,all the kids gathering around the house because Robson’s car was on our drive ,, so good to listen to these three absolute legends .
❤❤❤
Equally as good as Shilton and Clemence of that era, never got a look in Internationally and should have done. The favouritism from the FA in this era was unreal.
Three absolute legends here, brilliantly hosted by Jeff. 🙌🏼
Been watching Town since 68 and Eric Gates is my favourite player of all time. Had no idea what a great character he is. The thing that strikes me about this is the relationship Bobby had with his players- based on mutual respect.
What a great team they were Bobby Robson s super team !
Very good😊
The Golden Years... Unfortunately every Ipswich side is now judged against this group and nothing will compare...So glad I got to be part of this era.
Absolutely brilliant. The stories that they were able to share. In such an informal chat .3 of my favourite players. The great success of Ipswich town during the Robson era was they were a team that worked for each other. Pretty much how things are at PR under KM now. 👏
Although I wasn’t an Ipswich Town fan,as a young boy I knew all the players names and always looked forward to watching them whenever they were on the tv. They always played good football and were always entertaining. I finally got to see them when they played Charlton in the FA cup and I was like a rabbit in a headlight seeing all these top quality players. Ipswich won that day 3-2 to avoid a cup upset but I remember it was a fantastic game and atmosphere.
Great to some stories from the lads of what went on off the pitch! Lovely times.
i remember this, wasnt it 10 years ago or so now?
I was born in 1978 march 7th
💙
Three true ITFC stars
Nice to hear from some of the players we don't normally hear from.
Great memories. Great times. 78 cup final best day of my life. From singing on the steps of Wembley at 1100 waiting for the gates to open to the drive back along the A12 with the crowds lining the bridges getting thicker and thicker. Priceless. I have Sunday newspaper cutting somewhere. The headline is 'The 1-0 slaughter.'
Great memories. As the guys said, it was just a shame that they didn’t win the number of trophies they deserved.
The days when players played for the love of the game and not money. Real characters amongst them and Bobby Robson knew how to handle each and every one of them. Great times.
They were still being paid!!
@@Andyferguson-ml4uo Of course they were but people were getting better pay on the docks in those days. Footballers salaries were nothing special.
Watched this earlier and laughing at bits watched this loads of times wished I was around during the robson era but I have the videos. Do you by any chance have the other one sky did covering the Ramsay era?
Unfortunately not, but if I come across it, I will get it on here.
@@ITFCJez cool
I was lucky enough to be of school age during the Robson era. There have been many changes to the game since then such as the number of permitted substitutions. Perhaps the biggest change is the reliance on the transfer market. These days many clubs will sign fourteen players in a couple of transfer windows rather than in thirteen years.
@@ITFCJezIPSWICH TOWN BBC MATCH OF THE DAY WITH JOHN MOSTON FROM THE ORIGINAL BBC VIDEO FOR MR NEIL FITZGERALD PLEASE
Thank you for uploading, really decent watch 💙💙
School trip from Cambridge. First match I ever saw live and then watched it on Match Of The Day!
My first ever Ipswich Town game .I stood in the Chuchmans as Paul Cooper saved those penalties. We knew he was good but two penalty saves in a game ?And Eric Gates doing what Only he can do .Not a bad first game to attend.
Cooper was my hero growing up. I did a sketch of him for art in school and when I went on a goalkeepers course run by psl (?) he showed up for a pen shoot out. He signed my drawing and saved my pen. I got my right hand up to his pen going to my left but there was too much force behind it. IIRC, I was the only one to actually get a hand to his shot.
And Ipswich went down anyway
Having been to the game as an Oxford fan I still recall the fans calling out there’s only one Tommy Cooper
Before my time (born in 1991), but love watching these videos. Great to hear some of the chants haven’t changed
Remember this result as if it was yesterday. I was a teenage Ipswich supporter form Bulgaria, hoping we stay up. Remember paper calling Atkins scored the most important goal keeping Ipswich up (most likely). Then remember the horror of Oxford winning their 3 games in hand, after the season had ended. Nowadays I have ifollow Ipswich subscription and am happy we are on the up!
Absolute brilliant atmosphere ,not even16000 in the ground yet it sounded like 30.000.The noise when the winner went in was unreal, still it meant nothing as Arsenal went to a lame 3 nil defeat to Oxford and we lost 2 .1 at West Ham to send us down.Oh and that was never a free kick 😂
I was at this game. Police were anticipating fans in the North Stand trying to get on the pitch but the fans in Churchmans ran on the pitch. I think there was a controversial penalty decision at West Ham that went against us; Terry Butcher remonstrated with the ref at the end of that West Ham game.
This was my first ever ipswich game at 8 years old. I've been hooked ever since ⚽️💙⚽️💙
I have distant memories of watching this one as a five year old with my dad.
This old fart of a presenter was so condescending towards Brett Johnson. Look Norwich is so biased. Can’t wait for the tables to turn again.
Just perfection..

The album did
Even featured Robert Fripp from King Crimson
This is by far the best work they ever did together ❤️ I love every single sing!!!
Soo good✨
Incredible career that spans decades and they are still going strong. This song was incredibly underated, it just didn't have the right kind of hook and get the proper airplay, I was in radio at the time and twisted my program directors arm to play it , he wouldn't budge so I'd play it out of rotation when I knew he was passed out
also - that was NOT a foul on Dozzell either at the end for FK. Justice was served when ITFC went down and OU stayed up from what i can see from this.
Oxford should have gone down. Maxwell paid Arsenal off to get smashed by Oxford in the last game of the season.
Agreed both points but the foul on Butcher would have resulted in a sending off today. But all games are like that, full of what ifs.
how the hell is that not a foul on Judge for the ITFC first goal?!?
Rules may well have been different back then.
They should play this in concert. Also The Stewardess Song.
Hands down.A true 80's classic. They just don't make them like that anymore.
Fantastic
The best.Ringo Starr is in the R&R Hall as a solo act and these cats aren't in....what a joke.
An underappreciated gem of a song from the duo in that era. I listened to this cassette in my youth driving into work and picked out "It's A Laugh" as one of my favorites then and to this day. I hadn't heard "It's A Laugh" in probably over a decade but from the first notes I slipped back in time to what memory and nostalgia would have me believe was a simpler, better time. It worked. Great song from a simpler, better time when I was young but _more_ importantly, a time when everyone that I loved was still here to share with me this Earthly walk.
I STILL BE BANGING THEIR MUSIC!!! L 🥰VE THESE THIS GROUP!!!
