Start -up at 2:16. This is a 1951 Toro Sportlawn 18" reel mower. I like these reel mowers with engines on them. It also reminds me of the old cartoons that have a scene with a mower, they often show a reel mower with an engine. The engine is a Briggs 5s. #old #engine #mower #antique

This was a $20 find. There were some missing parts as well as some modifications that weren't helping. Part of the engine was covered in a thick outdoor paint, like what would be used on a wooden fence. I chose dark gray for an industrial look. The 6:1 gear reduction makes me think of an engine built for work. #engine #old #vintage

This is a Craftsman labeled Briggs that came from a rototiller. The tiller was going to be scrapped. I pulled off the engine. It has been sitting for a year or two and who knows how long it was sitting before that. I cleaned the carburetor, replaced the pump diaphragm and tank gasket. This engine didn't take much to get running, but smoked badly. The top of the piston was covered in oil even with a brief runtime. I took the engine apart, cleaned everything, honed the cylinder and replaced the rings. All new gaskets, and it runs again with much less smoke. This engine was running but started knocking. The engine was taken apart for evaluation and rebuilt with parts as needed. The crankshaft end play was too much. This was corrected. This is part 3. In the last video of this Briggs it was running but there were a few things left to complete it. The kickstart has a new chain and the threads cleaned up on the stud to hold the spark plug wire clamp. Also there is a reproduction muffler installed now. It is mounted to an old sawmill cut board. The Maytag got cleaned up and painted. I wire wheeled and wire brushed the engine to remove surface rust. For help with rust protection, I used Rustoleum Rust Reformer and the Rustoleum gloss black. Also installed a reproduction muffler kit. I enjoy the sound of these just purring away. At the time of this video it's 20 degrees F outside. #vintage #engine #old

This is part 2. The magplate was too warped to use. I bought another one and transfered the coil and points over. Assembled the engine and the carburetor and plumbed the fuel system.
