Recording Preamp Shootout | Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 vs Warm Audio WA12 vs Audient iD44
I wanted to see whether using more expensive preamps on a recording really makes a difference, so I recorded the exact same song three times through three different preamps. Each instrument was recorded one at a time so they could all use the exact same preamp, and hopefully by the end any tonal differences would add up to a noticeable change in the final product.
The red clips are recorded through one channel of the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (3rd gen), using its built in preamps.
The gray clips are recorded through one channel of the Audient iD44, with its Console Mic Preamp, which is supposed to be higher end than the Focusrite Scarlett ones.
The orange clips are recorded through an outboard mic pre, the Warm Audio WA12 Mk. II. This is a mic pre only, not an interface, so I patched it into the return of the Audient unit so it would use the converters from the Audient but not be colored by its preamp at all. That way all you're hearing is the Warm Audio pre and not any coloration from the interface.
Obviously no two takes are exactly the same but I recorded each part back to back (acoustic through each pre, then banjo through each pre, etc) so I could remember exactly what I'd played and the instrument, mic, and positioning could be the same as much as possible.
I mixed the final song and then copied the mix settings to each of the others, so everything got processed the same in post.
The song in question, by the way, is Jimmy Eat World's "A Praise Chorus" but arranged like an indie folk song.

HX Stomp for Bass | Effects Walkthrough and Free Preset

The entire reason I bought an HX Stomp (originally) was to replace my bass pedalboard. I think it's fantastic for this and I thought I'd share the preset I've created for bass, and talk through some of what's going on in there. This is a bit different from what I usually post around here, but I'm hopping onto the channel to let you know my record, "Traces", is out today! It's a mellow, indie, singer-songwriter type of thing: think Noah Gundersen, Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, that sort of vibe. Lots of pianos, electric guitar layers, 80s synths, acoustic riffs, and roomy drums. If that sounds intriguing, links here: ...

It's become a bit of a buzzword on the internet now, but a good 'transparent overdrive' is one of the most useful tools a guitar player can have. I am using a Tone Hammer DI. Because it lets you control the gain and volume out to the board, would that be more like a Line Isolator than a DI because the volume doesn't drop off? I am running my HX Stomp into a THDI then out to the board. I use the AGS circuit and have my gain set about 9 o'clock. I like the AGS better than the Teemah or some of the other dirt settings in the HXS.

    • @LeFeversAudio
      @LeFeversAudio Před měsícem

      It sounds like the Tone Hammer is more like a flexible DI; my understanding is that line isolator is electrically a different thing. I wonder if the THDI is lowering the signal to mic level but then giving you lots of range to make it louder or quieter from there. Looks like a great unit, for sure.

    I think it sounds very similar, I even slightly prefer the RAT on high gain, but the low gain of the DRV is lovely, it's really hard to choose because you get overdrive and distortion with the DRV, but it costs 250 bucks which seems like a lot to me. How will the RAT sound, stacked with some boost in front, we all have a boost on our pedal board, we could use it to simulate the low gain of the DRV, will it sound the same? It would be an interesting test, I hope you can do it.

    Excellent advice on the stock cabs and exactly how I feel about the idea of Strymon likely knew what they were doing when they picked the stock cabs. Besides a lot of the differences in cabs can likely be matched with an eq. And anytime I’m running my board direct to a PA I’m using an eq pedal anyway as you never know what you’ll get with different house speakers. Thanks again.

    thanks so much for the Hx stomp patch. Im gonna give it a try. I sold off 99% of my pedals (kept a cali76, and thronheim skarbass one) and bought an HX stomp. I have dialed in 5 tones to cover all my playing. My biggest take away with the HX stomp is if you're using a stage amp/cab to remove the amp/cab block, or if you are going straight to the house, to remove the amp/cab on a footswitch. Makes it easy. Next, use the global setting to remove useless low (80hz and below) and useless High( 4k and above) ,on all patches. Finally, figure out the amount of gain from each bass, and adjust it so its perfect, and figure out how to footswitch it in, incase you switch basses during your show.

    You should have tried a low-gain setting. The DRV sounds best on a ‘just breaking up’ tone where when you play louder you push into clipping. I never change that setting, it’s the first thing in my chain and it will never leave my board. It’s fantastic for that slight boost at the beginning.
