      The PRV is a laughing stock on the internet, but I think these later PRVs are underrated engines. Unfortunately I haven't, and that's a subject I'd like to delve into. Some say they can't be rebuilt and others say they can. I would really like to get my hands on one to see for myself before mine starts leaking.

    Where did it leak? My ZPJ4 will probably need a change of the notorious O-rings on the block behind the flywheel.

    • @dailyingxm
      @dailyingxm Před 17 dny

      It was leaking from the rear cam seal, timing cover, oil temperature sensor, right main seal, but the worst was the rear main seal. Occasionally it would leak on to the exhaust pipe and make a mildly embarrassing amount of smoke. With the ZPJ4 it should be easier, as you can just remove the gearbox without removing the engine? I've heard that even on the 4hp18 it's possible to change the main oil seal without pulling the engine.

      Thank you! IMHO XM is still an unbelievable car to drive. Hydractive combined with the DIRAVI is such a joy to drive. It has also become a sort of personal challenge to get this car as far as I can, as I have heard that Citroens and French cars ingeneral are weak and won't do high milage. This is now my third year of ownership and I have now done 30k km with it. Depends on what counts. Keep in mind that this car sat for over ten years before I bought it and I paid 300€ for this fine machine :D Leaking DIRAVI was quite annoying to fix and this transmission issue that I'm having. Bit of a spoiler, but the Lubeguard additive helped with the noise, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the transmission is eating itself alive. Still it has never let me stranded.

      @@dailyingxm It´s all just about when you will finally give up. :) But you can always get another hydropneumatic Citroen in better overall shape afterwards :) I believe 90s and earlier 2000ish PSA especially diesel cars are pretty overall tough and still simple-ish enough. What kills it in time is corrosion (as like on any other car), big lack of maintenance (as like on any other car) and if it has too fancy electronics. I am mostly impressed how smart the whole hydropneumatic system works and what it all does once you learn a bit more about it´s functions, also how well made and decently reliable my old-ass V6 XM is, considering all the very unique and weird technical solutions on it, not simple electronics without easy ways how to diagnose it and it beeing overall 32 years old. It has much less kms then yours, but I also payed much much more for the car (and I shouldn´t have). All I am fighting with is neglection by the years, corrosion and of course some rubber hoses, bushes, seals, bearings etc., but nothing too major as a engineers faults, bad solutions or low quality. I don´t use it daily or in the wet or winter, it´s a garage queen tho. Me personally I would love to have more modern Citroen "XM" in a VAN or MPV version (with the same hydropneumatic solutions for suspension, Diravi etc.), as I need it for my work and as it is the most practical type of car one can have. Unfortunatelly, theres nothing like that. What gets the closest to it maybe are Sevel Nord Vans and MPVs, but very remotely and with no such hydropneumatics and design solutions, so not good enough...

    that seems like its the brake band squealing, had the same thing on my 4hp18, i had to change the oil about 9 times in a row to get all of it looking new which helped, but didn't completely fix it, i then adjusted the brake band on and that completely fixed it for at least the 2 1/2 years that i owned that car afterwards, it's a fairly easy job to do, but i'm not 100% sure if you can do it on all 4HP18 Transmissions, i took a guide from a german citroen forum to adjust it, if that doesn't work, the brake band is to worn to be readjusted again and will need to be replaced: To adjust the brake band (valid for 4hp14 and 4hp18): Required tools: -Allen Socket (unfortunately I don't remember the size) -ring wrench set -Torque wrench for 10 Nm Seen from below, there is a noticeable Allen screw on the rear part of the gearbox, which is secured with a hexagon nut. Carefully loosen this hexagon nut using a box wrench (it is very tight because it is held in place by a corrugated washer). Screw the Allen screw all the way in and tighten it with 10 Nm. Now loosen the Allen screw again by exactly 2 turns. Then tighten the hexagon nut again without turning the Allen screw.

      @@dailyingxm I had the same sound when I changed the Dexron III (syntetic) oils by mistake. This model involves using Dexron II (mineral) oil, as you have done, because it has a frictional property. Now I have had to use a friction additive: Lubegard automatic gearbox instant shudder fix. This mutes the sound. If the sound comes back after the oil change, it must be added again. The same ZF gearbox is used at Saab models, and their maintenance program also recommends this additive, if facing similar problems. Yeah XM was really not a good winter car... My dad had one when I was little in sweden. Even when we kept it in the garage if we were in a rush it was not making dad happy making it wait to lift up... I sold my xantia activa v6 to a guy in finland by the way, hope it's going well there to someone :D

      I, on the other hand, think that XMs among other hydraulic Citroens, are one of the winter cars that you can get. There is nothing like a hydropneumatic suspension when it comes to snowy roads. And in my case the Diravi makes it unbelievably joyful to drive in bad conditions. It shouldn't take insufferably long to rise if driven on a daily basis. That reminds me of a DS enthusiast priest who used to say that "when the hydraulics are building the pressure there is a good time to make prayer that the journey will be safe" and even though I'm not religious myself, I think the valuable lesson there is that be calm and don't be in a hurry. I bet that your old Activa is owned by someone at the Citroen club!

    Very well spoken and filmed videos. Great to watch. Maybe this is a bit the same feeling like have seen Kylli-täti in TV as a kid making art and telling a story same time. :D I don't even have any Citroen but Peugeot and Renault myself.

      Thanks, you really made me laugh! They have both made great cars, especially in the 80s and 90s. I find it a bit funny that someone wants to watch my "fiddling" without owning a Citroen or a gun on their head :D

      Those got to be great little cars to drive. I just realised that when I was a kid there were 309s everywhere and now I can't recall when is the last time that I've seen one.@@jannetoivanen3298

    Elle démarre plutôt bien,je suis assez surpris, ça peine un peu au début, mais ça va quand même bien, Que mettez vous comme huile moteur par ces basses températures ?? De la 5w40 ? 5w30 ? Ou 0w30? Car avec _31° Il faut de l'huile assez fine pour qu elle puisse être pompée par la pompe a huile En Tous cas,ce que je sais,c est qu il ne faut pas d huile trop visqueuse comme la 15w40 ou 10w40,car elle se figera ,la pompe a huile ne pourra pas la pomper et ne lubrifiera jamais le moteur au démarrage et ça empêche même de démarrer le moteur Si vous Mettez de l'huile fine pour l hiver comme la 5w40, 5w30 ,ou même 0w30 si il fait très froid, votre voiture démarrera encore mieux et surtout le moteur sera mieux protégé au début 🙂👍 Moi j ai une Fiat Doblo 1,3 l multijet de 2007, elle a 300 000 kms et elle fonctionne nickel aussi, malgré que ce soit du Fiat, et que les gens parfois sous estime,ça a l air d'être robuste aussi, j en prend très soin aussi, surtout au niveau du moteur,je vidange tous les 5000 kms , change le filtre a huile en même temps,et je mets la meilleure huile 5w40 que je puisse trouver ( liqui Moly ou Total Quartz)et ça tient bien, ça a l.air d aller et elle est partie pour continuer au déjà de 300 000 kms

      I was quite surprised at how well it started and how well the battery handled the cold. I like to use Total Quartz 5w-40 and I change oil and filter every 10k km. It might not be the best at -30c, but we rarely have this extreme cold, usually it gets only around -25c. Most of the time I'm also using engine block heater. I agree, at least Fiats utility vehicles are tough vehicles. My brother owns a Peugeot Boxer with 2.8 Iveco diesel and it has been really reliable and starts like nothing at -25c with only glow plugs.I hope that your car serves you well!

      @@dailyingxm Merci de m.avoir écrit , c'est vrai que la 5w40 suffit a _20°, elle ne figera pas,🙂👍👍, les voitures comme la vôtre sont robustes aussi,j ai vu dans la vidéo que la vôtre a plus de 400 000 kms 🙂, bravo qu elle soit arrivé jusque là💪👍👍🙂, Bonne continuation 🙂🙋👍👍

    Shame there's no thermometer in your XM since at least the temperature in my C5 used to stop counting at -29 simply because they probably thought nobody would be stupid enough to even drive in temperatures under that.

      Bonjour! That is exactly why I bought one. I figured that since SMs are out of my price range XM is the closest I can get. XMs design is clearly inspired from the SM and they both are fitted with the V6 and the DIRAVI.

      @@dailyingxm La XM a en effet les lignes du chef d’œuvre de Robert Opron. Bien qu’elle partage son châssis avec la Peugeot 605, je la considère comme une vraie Citroën. Le système DIRAVI, la suspension hydropneumatique et le V6 PRV lui confèrent toute son originalité et prestige. Elle est extraordinaire à conduire. Bien à vous
