    My mom bought one of these brand new. A year or less later, as a 16 year old, I drove it too fast on an icy turn and rolled it down a hillside 1.5 times, came to a rest on the ceiling with a shattered windshield. No air bags, my friend and I were suspended like bats from the ceiling. Got out, every single panel was dented. When the fire dept flipped it over, the car started right up. Sadly it was totaled and I had to use my savings to buy her another car. i was supposed to buy a 68 Camaro later that week.

    I have a 2005 Yukon 5.3L 4x4. Looks exactly the same. I may have a very slow rear main leak. I just got it and am watching it now after a fresh oil change. Has 216,000 miles on it. Seems to run great though. 3 questions: 1. Was there a cover on your inspection hole that shows the bottom of the flex plate? Mine does not have a cover of any type. I can see the bottom of the flex plate. 2. I have a pair of ramps that raises vehicles back or front tires by about 12". Would that be helpful to use for this job? 3. So the rear seal has two parts? A shaft seal, plus a shaft seal cover gasket?

    • @artysmotorsports
      @artysmotorsports Před 4 měsíci

      I don't remember if I had an inspection cover. I've seen a rubber or metal one on a few of these. Ramps may depend on the height of your yukon mine seemed to be slightly higher in the rear so the jack stands basically leveled it. Yes the rear main seal cover has a gasket and the rear main seal is installed on the cover so technically two parts.

    • @thesetruths1404
      @thesetruths1404 Před 4 měsíci

      @artysmotorsports i didn't notice a gasket at the bottom of the plate. Is it just metal to metal across the bottom? It's not supposed to hold oil I assume, if it's leaking from the rear main, right? More or less just a dust cover?

    • @thesetruths1404
      @thesetruths1404 Před 4 měsíci

      @artysmotorsports also, I think mine is leaking from the oil cooler line mounting point. There is a gasket there that's known to leak down, and ends up on the filter and even the back and bottom area were the inspection hole is...that general area. I had oil on my filter, but it was tight.

    • @artysmotorsports
      @artysmotorsports Před 4 měsíci

      @thesetruths1404 the bottom side shares the oil pan gasket. I've seen some people run a small amount of oil resistant rtv to help prevent leaks.

    • @thesetruths1404
      @thesetruths1404 Před 4 měsíci

      @artysmotorsports so by design, if the plate cover seal and oil pan gasket don't leak, oil could build up in that small area if the round main seal is leaking?

  • @ianmason.
    @ianmason. Před 4 měsíci

    The coating on the 2nd module is called a "conformal coating". Pretty standard fair for any electronics that need to work in potentially dirty or wet situations. The corrosion on the first module may be caused by that capacitor in the corner (bottom left @6:46) leaking rather than by water ingress. Certainly looks like it to me, and I've seen a few leaky electrolytic capacitors in my time. Failure of electrolytic capacitors is a common fault in all electronics, and leaking of electrolyte from them is probably the commonest failure mode. It _might_ be possible to reuse that module after cleaning it up and replacing that capacitor, but it's also possible that the corrosion from the electrolyte has done too much damage to make that possible. Electrolytic capacitors are one of the few modern electronic components that you can expect to need to replace in equipment as it gets older, they definitely have a rated service life sometimes as little as 1000 power-on hours depending on the particular part.

    I have a 2008 Escalade, basically the same setup. Mine has the 6.2 and 4 wheel drive. Main seal been leaking for a few years, typically only a few drops in the driveway overnight. I did an oil change last weekend and now it leaks a LOT! I put some Blue Devil "rear main sealer" in today. Hoping it will stop or at least slow the leak. Based on the reviews on this stuff it is supposed to work well. One review the guy said he was spending $100 a week on oil to replace the leaked oil!!!! That is a major leak! Mine is nowhere that bad. This was on a 2003 Silverado. Anyway, I'm getting old, in my younger years I would do this job in my driveway. But if it comes to it, I'll have to pay a shop to do it. I like the video showing how this can be done without a lift and all sorts of professional shop equipment.
