      @@GoodViewWoodworks you put the wood planks inside a wood frame like it was plywood. If you don’t know how it will now fail, maybe pick up a copy of “Woodworking the right Techniques” vs learning off CZcams. You will be a better woodworker and not screw over your customers.

    • @Qwiv
      @Qwiv Před dnem

      2 replies have been deleted. You put the boards in the short orientation because the pallet scraps are short, but when the wood swells each board will get fatter in the long direction and there are a bunch of them. If each pallet piece grown 1/64th….. what is the total movement when you add up all the boards? Maybe they only swell a few thousandths…. Still adds up to a quarter trapped into a frame that will not expand at the same rate. The corners of your skirt are going to come apart….. well they probably already have. Hard wood table tops should have the grain oriented in the long direction so they swell in the short direction and they should be attached to stretchers with a connection that can move, easiest being a figure 8 connector. They should. Ot be contained….. Glad you gave up in a CZcams channel with Woodworking instructions in it.

    • @GoodViewWoodworks

      @@Qwiv I understand your concern but I disagree. Mainly for the fact that the wood is sealed and because it’s in a conditioned space it will not expand and contract at such a rate as you have suggested. I have a table with a skirt like this that is almost 10 years old and has not “blown apart”. If the wood didn’t have a urethane finish on all sides, then yes, it would come apart. For example. The floors in my house squeak in the winter but in the summer they don’t die to expansion and contraction. The difference is that my floors are only finished on one face and therefore they move considerably.

Thanks for the advice. Its an 8ft bar made of pallets on wheels 😮 the top itself is made up of 485 triangles 🔺️ placed in a "Harlequin" pattern, cross my fingers it will be funtional, seats 10 and hope it turns out just a beautiful as the indoor models, im not into videoing my LIFE or how toos, its a learning experience.

    I have a question and hope you'll answer. I'm new at this first off. I live adding things to my resin and wood boards, i.e. shells, corks etc. When I'm finished with all the resin work and it's cured...I plane it and sand. Here's where I'm unsure what to do next. What I've been doing is sanding the wood to like 220 grit and the resin to 5000 and polishing. Still my resin is not super clear as before running it through the planer. I have to add a top coat. Is this correct? How do I handle not wanting the topcoat on the wood? Thank you for your help.

    • @GoodViewWoodworks
      @GoodViewWoodworks Před 2 měsíci

      Great question! You must cut and buff with an automotive buffer and buffing compound. Then polishing compound. You can’t hand buff this stuff to bring back the shine and clarity. But honestly I just sand to 220 or 320 and spray a clear coat over it because the clear coat finish will be stronger and more scratch resistant than the epoxy is.

    For an art project I used epoxy thinned with acetone to harden and stabilize charcoal. It worked great. The charcoal didn’t look plastic or artificial, but it was very hard and strong. It wasn’t so strong that I’d use it to support weight in a structure, but it didn’t crumble, fall apart, or leave charcoal smudges when touched. It was fine for my art project.

    I’m a material scientist specializing in polymer resin and I have absolutely no idea what you were talking about when you say don’t seal the edges. The physics of doing an epoxy seal on the edge are exactly the same as doing a live cast. There is literally no difference if you epoxy seal the edge. the wood physically changed dimensions. There is no stopping that from separating. my tables have the same problem because where I’m at is also high humidity the only solution is to totally seal the entire table in the thin epoxy layer. Then there is no exchange of moisture ever again.

    • @GoodViewWoodworks
      @GoodViewWoodworks Před 3 měsíci

      Would this be an argument from authority? Wouldn’t that be a logical fallacy?? The only time I have ever had a problem with the edges separating was when I sealed the edges. I have not had a single failure by not doing so…. So I will continue with what works! I’ve only built over 100 of these things… see what I did there?

    • @GoodViewWoodworks
      @GoodViewWoodworks Před 3 měsíci

      @Eaglespence11 it will bond but the bond between the wood and the tabletop epoxy won’t be strong enough. You need to cool the temp in your work area and allow the deep pour to fully penetrate the wood and create the strongest bond. The bubbles will rise to the top being that it takes longer for the deep pour to set up and cure when the temp is lower. Hope this makes sense.

    I have doubts that this will really penetrate more than the outer layer (although that may be enough depending on the usecase). To stabilize anything with significant depth you really need a vacuum/pressure pot to force the air out, and then force the product in. Even thin oil doesnt penetrate that deep just from gravity and capilary action - and expoxy no doubt has much larger particle size, not to mention limited time to act. Unless you have some unique piece you absolutely need to restore it probably makes more sense to use good wood to begin with rather than using expensive epoxy to try remedy it. If you do use pressure to fully penetrate wood with resin though - the result is nearly indestructible and will last forever, so it certainly has some usecases for making something special.

    Hey I was just wondering how strong this epoxy is, I found the perfect walking stick, and I mean literally perfect, almost looks like a wizard staff, but I believe it has some rot going on, I was doing some strength tests and ended up breaking off a solid like, 7th of it at the bottom, I have that curing right now because I decided to reconnect the pieces with e6000, but in breaking it I saw two things, 1, the wood was in fact fully dry, and 2, it was also pretty soft throughout it, it was partially in water/soggy dirt next to a pond when I found it and idk how long it was there for but I assume it's slightly rotted throughout, if I soak the thing in the penetrating epoxy would it be fairly strong? Like strong enough to be a walking stick or even take a hit?
