    Very informative. Thanks! One thing that I was told by a great coach is not to bring my elbow behind the plane of my body during the recovery which will cause shoulder impingement and hurt my shoulder. He would probably not do that in the pool since he would be rotated, but maybe it would be best not to show the recovery unless he is rotated?

      fred smit I never have my swimmers or myself for that matter do a recovery performing this proprioceptive exercise. I do have a video of using a physio ball and doing backstroke technique work where you can rotate on your long axis.

    I’m trying to rehab from a torn labrum and gluteus medius using water jogging. I seem to be straining my neck, any suggestions on why that could be happening greatly appreciated.

    • @billruth3744
      @billruth3744 Před 4 lety

      You could be hyperextending your neck to keep your face away from the water. Keep your head and neck in neutral, actually think chin down. Good luck on your rehab and keep up the pool work.

    Why “A” drill only? Why not your natural running form?

    Hi Bill - That was a really useful chart you put up with the 5 second step pace for each type of run. I'm recovering from total knee replacement surgery and will start exercising in the pool for a while. I'm not up to running in the pool just yet but I would like to start a water walking program. Do you have any guidelines you could give me similar to the ones you did with the water jogging chart but for water WALKING instead? Would I just cut the pace in half? Thanks.

    Hey Bill. I went to the pool today, first time there to rest a foot injury so no running, didn't know what I was doing so I searched and found your clip here. Turns out I was doing ok but this clip is excellent, especially the info on how to replicate the different running components (tempo, Vo2 etc). Simple, concise and good demonstrations. I now have a plan for my recovery sessions and feel a lot better about it. Thank you sir!

    i do sprinting on the spot in the water at say chest height or slightly above. i ususally aim for 10 x 30 secs sets of all out with 30s-1m rest between sets. do you think this is ok? i dont use a tether or vest. i do aqua sprints as an alternative to land sprints due to my damaged knees and lower back problems. how does aqua sprinting compare to land sprints both metabolically and in terms of calorie expenditure?

    I don't agree with this technique. nobody runs on land like that. The knees should not be as high as that. I've been pool running for 20 years and lift my knee then extend my leg out and pull the leg in again, just as happens when running outside.

    • @billruth3744
      @billruth3744 Před 9 lety

      hardfishskur Not to be disrespectful BUT, I can see you know absolutely nothing about running. In the film it was said that this is demonstrating "A" running drill form. Gerard Mach developed 3 basic running drills, A's, B's and C's. "A" running is basically high knee running to develop the proper biomechanics to run fast. What you are describing what you do is basically a "B" running action which in reality is the lead leg hurdle drill. A lot of so called internet coaches refer to "C" running drills as butt kickers, when in actuality they are a hurdle trail leg drill.I have been using these pool running workouts as both a supplement to and in place of running during injury for over 40 years as a cross country and track and field coach along with coaching swimming and triathletes.

    • @hardfishskur
      @hardfishskur Před 9 lety

      Bill Ruth Well you are disrespectful, Bill. I've been running for 35 years. I've coaching qualifications obtained here in Scotland. I ran in North Caroina, was NAIA All American in 1994, I have a half marathon time of 69.06, 10K 31.17. 10 miles 51.54. You say in this video that the high knee drill is the mechanic to use ALL THE TIME. looking at this technique, it does not replicate the running action on land that you said in the video you must replicate. I think you know more about swimming Bill than running. Take it easy.

      @kevinwong259 Před 8 lety

      +hardfishskur Hi not to intrude, but the things talked about in this workout is for sprinters, your times are impressive for long distance running, but the A's, B's, and C's are meant to work on sprint form, and as you know from being a long distant runner doing these exercises like sprinters are not efficient for long distance because you would get easily fatigued, so these pool exercises do make sense for sprinters because if you combine all of these techniques you get the sprint mechanics used on land.

    Excellent summary on how to pool-sprint. I want to begin incorporating a day of sprint intervals each week to my workouts, but have a degenerative disc condition and am 3 years post-lumbar surgery. The pool is an excellent alternative for me, but I wasn't sure about technique. Thanks for posting this.
