    I always try to guess the founder of bells before looking on Dove. In this case I am correct,Whitechspel bells. The shrill almost steely sound of trebles os the give away. My dad who was a bellhanger for Whitechapel in the 1940s to 1970s had a great saying. Whitechapel for trebles and Taylors for Tenors. White chapel produced wonderful light and chirpy wedding bell 8s. Taylors bells are more mellow and of course nobody did heavy tenors better.

      No, the front four are Gillett & Johnston of 1912 and the back two are Samuel Knight of 1703. They are all bronze bells - some of the bells, especially treble and 3rd sound a bit shrill because they are close to the louvres on the side I recorded this from.

    Unusual view of an unusual ring of bells. Thank you! Bells like this are what make ringing interesting. No points to all the people who highlight that these aren't the prettiest in the world. But they should be kept just as they are. If you want to go ring yet another pristine Taylor 8 then there's a list as long as your arm. Leave these alone! :) 2!

      Thanks for the kind comment Ben. Absolutely agree with you about the uniqueness of the bells - in my time as a regular Wednesday night visitor, the bells certainly grew on me the more I rang them. I understand they're a lot more manageable (with lesser experienced ringers in mind) since the installation of Rope Guides late last year, although I'm yet to ring them myself since. A grand ring for a grand Cathedral.

    I always love to hear bells and try and guess the founders, well I thought these were a modern peal but a quick check of Dove revealed how wrong I was, a mixed bag of bells including some Gillette and white chapel and even some pre reformation bells. Superaltive is not a method I like ringing, I think it is because of the cambridge places in 5/6 that have an e tr place a d dodge to reverse it.

    • @francescogreenslade7793
      @francescogreenslade7793 Před 9 měsíci

      These are quite the mix. The 4 and 8 were added by Warner's, followed by the 3 a few years later. G&J augmented to eight, and more recently the tenor was replaced with a new Whitechapel bell. Most recently, the Warner 4th and Eldridge 7th were removed (the latter reserved as a clock/sanctus bell) and replaced with two relocated bells sourced by the Keltek trust, part of a major restoration project which was completed this summer. The new seventh in particular completely brightens up the ring.

    • @francescogreenslade7793
      @francescogreenslade7793 Před 9 měsíci

      Re Superlative, I don't mind ringing it at all, in fact I like the rhythm you get with all the dodges on the front and back. My issue isn't the extra place in the C places, but rather moving off the back after only 4 and not 5 dodges 🤦. Was pleased to be conducting this piece on one of my favorite regular towers.

      @@Steven_RoweWell I'm much more into my Surprise Minor and Major (because I live and ring in a rural area, there is much less ten and twelve bell ringing, although we do have two ten bell towers fairly close by) - I have to say I think my favorite methods are Norwich and Bristol respectively. I like ringing anything that is well struck though, even Plain Bob Doubles if it sounds good.

      @francescogreenslade7793 I think they arexan ideal weight for and 8. I do like 10sxto be heavier though. St Mary's cathedral in Sydney has a 12 plus a flat 6 and extra treble and identical to Canterbury, my dad hung them in 1986. The front 10 are 15cwt and are such a cracking ring.

      @@Steven_Rowe One of my favorite tens, not very far from here either, is St Nicholas Guildford. I think that those are probably ideal weight for a ten (22cwt I believe). They were retuned and some recast, and are now very very nice.

    • @Steven_Rowe
      @Steven_Rowe Před 10 měsíci

      @francescogreenslade7793 my dad Ernest J Rowe hung the original 10 at Guildford Cathedral, he also hung Bow with Bill Theobald a d I can remember going to see him at Bow in 1961 on the night of the tryout, I was 8. Thr old Cornhiill 12 was also dads job, he didn't like them, they didn't sound nice and to heavy for the tower. I do think Bow are the nicest sounding peal in London, I do love St Paul's though, yes they are old school pre Simpson tuning but the sound is to me LONDON, victory, in Europe and all that jazz I'm glad they weren't retuned even though to me the best peal is without a doubt Yorkminster. Something i find truly magical about surprise max ringing on heavy bells is that there is almost two different things happening You have bells 1 to 7 almost dancing through the back 5 and of course the pattern of the back 5 changes as do all the bells but duexto the size of the back they dominate the sound.
