Michael Franks - I Bought You A Plastic Star.wmv
Michael Franks' 2004 recording of "I Bought You A Plastic Star," also written by him. The first time I heard it on the radio, I couldn't wait to buy the CD for myself. Then I started picturing the song, and putting graphics together. Hope you enjoy it!
* I own no legal rights to this song, and I highly suggest you also buy the CD - it's wonderful! *

Video is for entertainment purposes only, I own no copyright to this song, but I do own the recording I used for it, and put the graphics together for the video with an HTML script. This is my first experiment in using a screen-recording program. Sorry it came out a little blurry. Please try not to be too critical in your comments.

Strange music of the spheres Could it's lovely hum be coming from my heart? You appear and I hear song sublime Song that I'm incapable of. So Dear, let me hold you near While we treasure ev'ry measure,...

The Monkees sing in Spanish, a-cappella, a beautiful version of an Old Spanish Christmas Carol, "Ríu, Chíu." From their TV Christmas special in 1967; arranged and adapted by: H. Diltz, C. Douglas, C. Faryar, J. Yester.

Sorry but you are incorrect about them not being able to play an instrument. According to "The Monkees Tale" by Eric Lefcowitz ": Mike was an accomplished musician. Peter worked the folk circuit in Greenwich Village. And Mickey was an actor (Circus Boy) and played guitar and drums. All before the Monkees.

There's a studio version on the MISSING LINKS, VOLUME TWO album that has producer Chip Douglas singing the fourth vocal instead of Davy. Not saying it's necessarily better, but it sounds cleaner as it was done in the studio.

Actually, while it IS true that the Monkees were assembled for the purpose of being in the TV show, two out of four of them were musicians before they joined the group: Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork. Davey Jones was a seasoned Broadway actor whose claim to fame before the Monkees was that he played the Artful Dodger in "Oliver!". Mickey Dolenz was the only one of the quartet who had no experience in music at all, but he turned out just fine as a musician after a lot of practice, now, didn't he?

The last thing Micky did before The Monkees was a few episodes of "Peyton Place". In the Monkee audition tapes, his hair looks exactly the same (shorter) as in those episodes of "Peyton Place".

April 1966: the Monkees began rehearsing music for the upcoming TV show and records. Mike, Micky and Peter were all experienced guitar players. Davy had been a singer on Broadway, but lacked experience with musical instruments. So Mickey learned to play drums, & Davy also learned to play drums so that he could back Mickey as frontman on tour. The early recordings often used other instrumentalists; same for the Byrds, Mamas & Papas, the Beach Boys, etc. And, wow, these 4 men can sing! :-)
