It's that time of the year again. The local weavers are hard at work. This "video" is really a re-render from a set of pre-captured "stills" captured at 1/3200s. Consequently it's not nice and smooth. The primary goal was the stills. This is like a neat little byproduct. Let's hope the little dude is successful. If "she" doesn't like it, he will have to start again!

The pair are super focussed on the task and I love hearing some gentle cackling laughter too. Afraid there was just a little laughter. I'd like to get some more one day. Poor little Tree Squirrel snacking away on the road when, suddenly he's dive-bombed. Watch him carefully, see his heart racing. Not sure what's in it for the Drongo. Perhaps the bird thinks it's a game. There's more than enough food to go round in this location so it's hardly necessary to fight for resources. What do you think? Watch if you like bird watching. It's just another day in the Umbrella tree next door. Drongo doesn't seem to be having too much success. Alternates between three different branches. Halfway through it sees another bird (a weaver) probing the first branch .. promptly claims that branch but it doesn't seem to get too far before quitting. One of those days.
Crowned Hornbill responds to Rooster!

Turn up the volume. First a rooster calls. Then the Crowned Hornbill calls. Then the rooster; then the hornbill. In between we hear the short sharp whistle of a Cape Wagtail. Captured East of East London, South Africa, on 28 June 2024 with a Canon R7 & Canon RF 100-500mm (at 500mm).

The poor coot is, of course, hopelessly outnumbered (100 to 1 maybe) yet is not giving up without trying. Will probably chase them one by one all day if it feels the need to protect its chicks. Video captured on the iPhone 14 in "slow-mo mode" with the 3x zoom option.

First part was captured at 100 FPS 1080p to get us some nice slow motion. The second section is 4k/50p "cropped into the centre of the R7's sensor" yielding superb detail and has been rendered at half speed. The last section is, again, super slow 1080p. Lacks the super resolution, but a bee working frantically is fascinating in super slow motion. All captured hand held in super calm conditions ...

I've seen this a lot with the birds in our backyard. Specifically, the rose finches seem to have caved and are feeding this other juvenile that is DEFINITELY not the same species. It's some other kind of finch (not a cowbird), but it's wild that they're feeding it at all. They've even taught it how to feed itself from the seed baskets.

I raised a fledgling robin many years ago that ended up being fed by half the birds coming into my yard, especially starlings. Stuck it in a special bird house with an opening small enough to keep it from jumping out, but wide enough for the parents to feed it. They fed it all right- along with every other bird in the neighbourhood that responded to its ruckus. When it was finally released to join its siblings, it was so fat it could barely lift off!
