Holst Singers
United Kingdom
Registrace 21. 03. 2014
The Holst Singers are one of Britain’s foremost choirs, described by the BBC as “a leading chorus on the international stage”. Based in London, in addition to their busy concert diary they regularly record for leading classical labels. With the support of their Musical Director, Stephen Layton, the choir has developed an interest in exploring new and neglected works as well as core choral repertoire. In concert the choir is renowned for dramatic and engaging performances, described by The Times as “interactive concert-going at its most revelatory”.

Layton on Brahms

Holst Musical Director Stephen Layton took a few minutes before the Brahms rehearsal to talk about the Requiem and his standout moments. The result is a fascinating insight into the music and what makes it such an extraordinary piece. “There In this final movement, a glimpse of something outside of our experience, something somewhere else and Brahms seems to feel that in this music…something gr...

Where do you get that score from - it looks like SATB and piano duet
Google Brahms Requiem for four hands!
@@samlipworth2374 I have! and I find carus verlag but without a preview and from the description it does not have the SATB lines. I'm working from Schirmer/Hal Leonard which is landscape format without SATB lines but with English text written in. With the binding and spacing in the video it looks like a home-produced version and for both conductor and pianists at rehearsals and performance seeing everything exactly as it's being performed is advantageous.
Gorgeous!
I can smell the incense rising.
It is finished.
What an extraordinary emotional journey-from the sepulchral “nunc” to the exultant “Amen.” There’s a lot that’s discouraging in the world, but here humanity redeems itself.
Gottes Segen
What a wonderful sound.
I think this is my favourite of all three. Such a glorious piece!!
Again, beautiful project to be a part of!
Gorgeous!!!!!
Such a beautiful piece and a lovely project to be a part of!
It’s always a revelation when Stephen Layton conducts a warhorse-something you thought you knew. We’re not experiencing some blood-curdling horror, we’re witnessing the crucifixion from the standpoint of eternity. In eight opening steps we’re lifted from the base human view of the event to the view of the angels. That’s why the sunny C-major cadences suddenly make so much sense. OK, now I get it.
Absolutely gorgeous
Beautiful singing.

Sometimes, somebody is capable of teaching you more about something in just a few short phrases or moments than you could ever imagine is possible over a long period of time. What an inspiration this great man is. People don't speak like this enough these days. Thank you for your words and music, Stephen.
One of my favourite moments in this beautiful piece. Thank you Stephen.
This setting by Martin, and the Requiem setting by Durufle are my two most coveted choral works ever written. Simply SUBLIME!
