My wife and I rode the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto and back. Clean, quiet, and fast. Not cheap but city center to city center beats dealing with airports and slower means of travel.

My guess is that it was Chinese Tourists that were smoking. These days, most apartment and condominiums in Japan also forbid smoking on the balcony and compliance with these rules is extremely high. Although I wouldn't say that Japanese have high regards for others, they do have a shared belief in the importance of obeying rules.

Joining the EU seems to be overall negative for Croatia. Cost of living has skyrocketed. Wages seemed better at first but prices quickly adjusted. Everyone I talked to over a 2-month period around Croatia said it was not good for them. The entry into the EU was great for the elite business class who could now access new loans and good for a small group of people who are now employed by the multi-nationals setting up in Zagreb. The EU bureaucracy and forced immigration quotes also not good for Croatia. Many immigrants now coming into smaller towns because young people are leaving the country and there are fewer workers. Unfortunate that the people of Croatia have been sold to Brussels.
