She could be cold backed and need lunging for 10 mins to calm down and warm up. Also draw reins to stop the head raising above the bit. If your training for dressage, to help with the shape. Being an ex race horse , a change of bit to a 3 link copper link snaffle or hard , slim rubber Pelham, so many other different shaped snaffles, due to her link with racing and snaffle bit. Also feed may be too heating.
@@user-ib3et9gk4l thanks but she's working really well with what I have her in and with what I'm doing with her so far so going to keep with that. This was just an off day for her. I don't use draw reins and I definitely wouldn't be able to on her anyways with how sensitive she is, when I first got her the pressure of her martingale cause big reactions so I wouldn't want to think of what she would think of those. Slow and steady wins the race...she's doing amazing 😍
I agree going without a bit did not encourage her to put her head down so no point in going without.
She just seemed to tense her neck against it which caused me to ride more braced. She tends to seek the contact with a bit.
Riding bitless requires the horse to ride to seat, leg and voice more than hand. That isn’t happening here so it won’t work.
You did well, you gave it a go, just to say you sat very well when P got anxious when the other horse bolted.
@@Lilligirl319 she works really well from the seat now, she just didn't like the pressure on her nose so it is what it is, we tried but at least I know now ☺️
@@Kelly19217 thank you 🥰
It’s making you ride with rigid elbows. I realise it’s all new but I’m not sure you would have control when out in the open or at speed the way she sticks her nose right out. Early days I guess.
@@user-fg6kg1dn7w yes I do state I didn't like how it made me ride....I go into a bit more in my next video when I jump her in it. ☺️
@@equestrianmelissaeventing Can’t wait 👍😃
@@equestrianmelissaeventing Do you think her issue is mouth issue or poll pressure issue?
@@user-fg6kg1dn7w I think she's just used to going a certain way and it's improving everyday 😃
@@equestrianmelissaeventing Oh heck yes. And in such a short time too
Blimey she went really well bitless!
Just a tip for you, don't try to kill the hubby on camera.x
🤣🤭
WOW!!! What a difference..love the long and low work, she looked lovely and soft..and she didn't panic as much in your transitions..so glad you thought of going witless, you are very kind and care❤ love Pea's progress.
Bitless not witless😅😅😅
wow congrats with the low work, must feel so much better for her. Pity as soon as you take in reins she goes up again.Same as mine, however good it feels weird riding a headless horse lol
@@simonetichelaar2021 I'm hoping she will continue like that when her bit is in but I won't be holding my breath haha. Was so chuft with her though.
She really is a lovely girl very genuine.
@@Kelly19217 she's a real sweetheart
Really enjoyed watching that, you definitely are a great team together, onwards and upwards 👍 😊.

What gorgeous kids 😊
Aww thank you :)
……for my 13th Birthday, my parents’ bought me a pair of plaited leather reins’, which I’d asked for. I was thrilled! I’m still using them to this day. I bought my own ‘Poley’ Stock Saddle, Halter, & Saddle Bags’, & Cloths’. Used to go riding twice weekly, from aged 8. Still do, when I can………
Good quality products when they last that long!!
@@equestrianmelissaeventing ……the stirrups’ I ride in are 4bar stainless steel. The 4bars give more surface to them, which really helps when trail riding, or droving………
You got some really nice things. Happy birthday!
@@VeronicaEquestrienne thank you. Most needed just keeping me safe 😜
how much was the full body protector? only ever tried on ones that made me feel like a stiff elephant. I you just mentioned the price thanks. Was the brand AKM?
HKM, Easy fit - I got mine from Online for Equine. You're always going to feel something but I remember my first one and I never felt like I could move but these ones where they have the small blocks rather than full panels are so much nicer and I forget I have it on (other than overheating haha).
How old is Pea? Really cool exercise. Thanks for sharing!
@@GPwithme thanks. She is 9
@@equestrianmelissaeventing You’re doing such a beautiful job with her!
@@GPwithme thank you so much
Yay Slytherin!!!! Brilliant haul, belated Happy Birthday xx 🥂 🎉 🎂 By the way do the stirrups 'break' so your foot doesn't get caught?
@@Siobhan_Shivaun thank you! ☺️. no they're not safety stirrups sadly but they are quite open so I don't think my feet would get caught to be honest.
@@equestrianmelissaeventing I have quite wide feet, so it's a thing I have to consider, regular stirrups are a bit on the narrow side for my liking, so I'm on the lookout for something more suitable for when I start riding again!
@@Siobhan_Shivaun I've got quite a bit space in them, I can happily measure the width for you if you need me to just give me a shout. ☺️
@@equestrianmelissaeventing will do, thanks a million!
I love her. There were moments when she relaxed. Keep working on her, she's fab.

@@Siobhan_Shivaun Thank you, can't really blame her when she's full of energy, she did good! Haha yeah he likes to make himself known....🫣🤣
That was very interesting. The mics really help with understanding what you’re working at with Pea. The banter with your husband was great to listen to. X
Glad you enjoyed it! He always makes sure he is known :p . :) x
you re the first I see putting the sheepskin numnah on the skin, I always thought it was a bit uneffective on top of a saddle pad. Comforting to see you have the too fast moments still.I still have that too, when we go out alone without his mate , done it 4 times now, very exciting to be independant.
Yeah sadly I don't think it worked (this was just a try because my full numnah was in the wash and they take forever to dry) but she needs to have the sheepskin directly onto her back due to some lumps she gets and the vet said the sheepskin will help prevent the friction that irritate them so I've got myself another of the one I already have and will just have to build a collection but yes I know exactly what you mean...:)
@@equestrianmelissaeventing yes I forgot the lumps, those won t help with her back sensitivity, can you show what bit you use next time?
Her race horse entry form and gait at the beginning here is still embedded and will soon soften with your guidance. The race quality will be great on xcountry as we saw on the training video!
@@ceciliavondehn4402 yeah it will always be there, just thankfully only comes out when she's a bit excited or stressed and thankfully is much easier to remind her she's a riding horse now haha. Yeah definitely will be good xc when she gets braver at the fences. ☺️
Some gorgeous horses, love that piebald. Some of them reminded me of Pea's lovely movement. Soon, Melissa and Pea! (When yr both ready.) Can't wait to see Pea get into her floating gait and to see you enjoy yourselves over a competition eventing day like this. 🏵️
I really hope so, she's coming on a treat at the moment. So many of the horses were just beautiful <3
First!❤
I have all my horses barefoot. Three are ottbs. They live on a very hard rocky hill but all are fine. It does take a while to reshape the hooves, at least a year. My first horse was an older ottb that had terrible feet. His shoes would fall off regularly and my farrier got very impatient with him. So i sacked the farrier, removed shoes and learnt to trim myself. I started him off wearing hoof boots in the day as the area was rocky and barefoot at night where it was better ground. He wore them for 2 months while if did regular rasping to reshape his feet. After that he was barefoot but used the boots the ride. He used to get stone bruises regularly and after he was barefoot he never got another bruise. Im not saying everyone can do their horses feet but if you can learn to just rasp between trims and kee them neat, it help the process go quicker. I have been doing my horses feet for 15 years now and have learned at lot, still learning. Some ottbs aren't able to go barefoot because their feet have been wrecked from their first trim. It's hard to get the bars and heels up again but from your vid, they don't look bad at all. Good luck!
Is the horses leg alright ?
@@Mia_Equine123 yes she's absolutely fine, good set of XC boots :)
@@equestrianmelissaeventing that’s good to hear ♥️

Hi, have you seen Lucy Robinson on Footluce she has taken on an ex race horse to do eventing and she has had to go through a lot to get him going and enjoying it, but I have to say she has done very well with him. With time and patience she will get more confident.

It’s all so new to her. She will get there with your patience ❤
I'm sure she will. She just took me by surprise at fence two...won't be entering a hunter trail there haha 😂
I am so proud of this little horse! I was initially quite disappointed as I really thought our jumping would come together a bit more out in the field but we will get there, just more practice and confidence-giving sessions needed and I am sure we will be flying. :D
Oh initially you so needed to have a reliable horse to follow. Bloody well done though 👏👏👏
Yeah, it would have come in handy, might see if I can find someone with an experienced horse next time. :) Thank you.
@@equestrianmelissaeventing Well you just need to avoid confrontation don’t you so that you can just keep taking positive tiny steps forward without sowing seeds of doubt. But rock on, great work. I am sure there is a massive powerhouse jump in there especially once those top line muscles build up and the power comes from behind. 👏👏👏
@@user-fg6kg1dn7w She's ex hurdle so she deffo has a jump, it's just getting her confidence doing different things bless her. It will come :) we have a fun ride booked with some nice a small rustic fences for us to try in a couple weeks so hopefully it's still fresh in her mind and we can improve on this session :)

She's really coming on well, give it another few months and Charlotte dujardain will be on the phone!!! 💖
Super impressed with how quickly she has come on with how little flatwork we have done lately. Just need to get our impulsion sorted :)
You know the letters around an arena/school, my horse is scared of them. Which letter he'll be scared of changes every day!!! 😂 😂 😂
Oh, good luck in your dressage tests if you do any then! Haha what are they like!
I’m impressed with how far she has come in a short time 👏 how does the online dressage work, do you submit a recorded video or is it live? 🤔
It's a recording, there are a few rules to follow as to how and where you record from but other than that it's pretty simple and it's great just to get some feedback on there way of going etc :)
She’s already improving and his showing great potential, how exciting! She has a lovely frame too when she accepts the contact and she’s slowly holding it for longer 😍 You’re doing a fabulous job with her x

Eeee sorry I have no idea I just turn it on and use it as it is?! 🤣
@@equestrianmelissaeventing Ha! Well, it looks fantastic!

oh, keep trying what works best for her & you. My OTTB came barefoot but wow, the pancakes I had to work with, 2 yrs later - he has a nice (old school/ 80's) QH looking hoof. I filed more than trimmed, just getting the shape to normal.
I'm hoping to get a on trimming course so I can just file them now as little and often as needed to help her next time we try. 🤞
I love her
Huge advocate for barefoot. It can take a while to toughen up her feet. Milestone Equestrian (another you tube account I follow) took a very very long time to get her boy Milo barefoot. Now his hooves are strong and he’s sound but she does use boots when she needs to. Don’t be discouraged. Happy to see that you are trying!
awwww so cute
WAIT WHY IS THIS ACTUALLY TERRIFYING I’m dying 😭
No more forehead! 😂😂
