    where's the rest of the story?! since this has been posted in 2012, i'm not very hopeful, but if there's a continuation to this... i'm currently quite into malinowski

    i know his voice for about 15 years know and its so unbelievably awesome to discover this right now. i just watched the video of him talking about "truth and beauty in music" and this fits so perfectly.

  • @tukkek
    @tukkek Před 11 lety

    Wow, such hard work! I can't praise him enough for not taking the easy route out and just having some MIDI playback as soundtrack to the animations :D

  • @EtienneAbelin1
    @EtienneAbelin1 Před 11 lety

    Hmm, I was talking about video in general as non-breathing, not Stephen's indeed genius animations. Part of his work process in creating them, btw, includes stretching and contracting the timeline of the animated score to a particular "breathing" interpretation of the music. But then it's fixed, and trying to play along with it is difficult because it's someone else's breath that has been "fixed". With the crank, we can all breathe together, instrumentalists and synchronator person!

  • @tukkek
    @tukkek Před 11 lety

    It might not anticipate or breath, but it is a great thing! As I said on the initial comment, Malinowski is a genius of a man :)

  • @EtienneAbelin1
    @EtienneAbelin1 Před 11 lety

    Ah, one last thing :) we are in fact (sometimes) perfect performers: because taking and giving time is part of this music, it's "breathing" music. It's its strength to be moderately stretched by us performers, not its weakness. The music gets more powerful, gains more shape by speeding up and slowing down a bit. The thing that can't keep up with us doing that organically is the non-breathing, non-anticipating video, poor thing...

  • @tukkek
    @tukkek Před 11 lety

    Yes, I knew about the crank - the original comment came about while I was wondering about it! Well I guess professional musicians are not such perfect performers as I imagined, then :) Thanks for enlightening me! By the way, kudos to you if you were involved in developing this (and master Stephen as well)!

  • @EtienneAbelin1
    @EtienneAbelin1 Před 11 lety

    Yes. But that's a machine. And when musicians play, they (we) can anticipate eachothers's movement and synchronize like this. But when a video is playing, it is an inflexible element in the equation: all musicians will wait for eachother if that's necessary when the group takes time but the video cannot listen and anticipate. That's why we developed this tool, check e.g. around 1:40 Stephen's slowing down the tempo of the visuals with the crank in the TEDxZurich "Music Animation Machine" clip

  • @tukkek
    @tukkek Před 11 lety

    I'm sorry, I don't understand your point. Sheet music is fixed: you can type them into a computer and it will play all parts synchronized and correctly, right?

  • @EtienneAbelin
    @EtienneAbelin Před 11 lety

    tukkek, you forget something: the difficult thing is the timing to something fixed and flowing - when you play with music sheets and a conductor, you "invent" the time flow together, but you don't have to follow something fixed.

  • @tukkek
    @tukkek Před 11 lety

    Great to see Stephen on camera! He just overflows with genius :) But I wonder how can whole orchestras (tens of individuals) play full complex compositions on the fly with just music sheets and a conductor, while these guys apparently can't follow a previously arranged, timed piece on the screen. Specially considering the similarities between Stephen's animations and actual music sheet. So... curious to know if I'm ignorant of something or if just that they are less than excellent musicians.
