People have become so dependent on the government that they’ve lost the entrepreneurial spirit for innovation and growth. One thing about Sri Lankan politics is, corrupt Lankan politicians promoted the socialism while mixing it with buddhism. Drawbacks of giving government money for free (by giving jobs and other unnecessary government benefits) was hidden by promoting blessings from good deeds by cunning politicians. Giving freebies was a good investment for politicians because whoever that was helped by the politician is going to vote that politician forever. So, they wanted to keep it that way (keep it simple and stupid). There’s nothing wrong with buddhism and buddhism have nothing to do with giving free jobs. It was the politicians who stole the peoples faith and emotions.

Excellently articulated (not quite sure if you need the background music as you are exceptionally interesting to listen to)be and yes as I commented previously, SL defaulted on their debts today. the country is on the brink of anarchy and the lawmakers responsible for this are not stepping down. so, thanks once again for your video and I hope you have time to do another one.

and here we are one year later - SL today defaulted on its debt. Other factors emerging now are lack of tourism, China turning its back on SL, bad decisions made by the government on fertilizers, hyper inflation caused by excessive money printing which obviously allowed the LKR to spiral into freefall.

I think the overspending on the war has been glossed over. At a societal level, SL was okay in trading their quality of life for satiating their thirst for ethnic violence, otherwise it won't be so easy to use the same excuse every time to under perform politically.
