Beyond Skyrim: Roscrea - Lore Chat | June 2024
I have a very special video for all of you all today. I did an email interview with one of the several senior writers, as well as an editor of Beyond Skyrim: Roscrea. The discussion was purely about the lore of Roscrea and the setting of the game.
About Hendrus
Hendrus, one of the senior writers and lore beards for the Roscrea project. Hendrus is deeply involved in Roscrean and Atmoran lore, as he has senior positions on both those Beyond Skyrim teams as a writer and a concept artist. His work on Roscrea includes everything from minor NPCs to major questlines, and he is responsible for making sure the Atmoran lore in Roscrea is consistent with the Beyond Skyrim: Atmora project. He is also well-versed in the Roscrea-only lore and recently overhauled the corsair lore for the project (one of the mod's primary enemy factions).
Hendrus is also one of the most experienced teachers at the Arcane University, the free training program on Discord designed to teach the modding skills needed for Skyrim modding and especially new lands mods. He has taught dozens of students the essentials of modding and good RPG storytelling.

And the devs are awesome to answer them and they shared a lot of visuals.       That will come once they get closer to the Imperial City. You can checkout the map at their discord. They have super large rivers, water everywhere, and a thick Jungle.

    Tamriel aesthetic sure is a very good one, simple yet (most of time) not boring. Same with the lore, however they could had been improved alot if a linguistic were in the team, because the names in general are pure gibberish.

      That's the idea. They are a wonderful team that does open development at their discord. Everything is accessible and there are no secrets unlike some other modding projects.

    Cyrodiil's foe could very well be Umaril. Or some ayleid king. Also, if I'm not wrong, some argonians in TES3 called Black Marsh "Argonia", so it's not that weird of a change.

      There's internal date that we set on loosely, but usually projects like this go better without publicly stating one - there are too many things that can shake our established plans and move the date around. It already happened to be fair, because we hoped to get it done by early/middle summer, but few questlines weren't yet fully ready and also we decided that to make this release as good as possible, we need a bit more time to polish things up. The general estimation is that we will try our best to release it this autumn - and things are looking optimistic, the spirits are high <3

    Ty for the vid...great coverage about how wayward realms has been recieved. I think there is a lot of potential there...and maybe the doubts are right...and that potential is not even possible. But imo if we can get a result that is similar to daggerfall with modern technology then that is already doing more than most game devs are even aiming for.

    I truly don't understand the criticism of procgen that says "it will be lots of the same assets reused" You take a game like skyrim and it reuses the same assets many times across many use cases and people don't seem to realize that is a must in gaming. You can't make a unique visual asset for everything in a game. The question is not if procgen will reuse assets...the question is will it do reuse assets in a way that creates scale but not in a way that is so intrusive that the reuse stands out more than with regular games that don't uses procgen Sure you can look at the dated visuals of daggerfall and say "I am bored nothing interesting has been done here" But that is only true in the context of modern gaming....at the time daggerfall was one of the most ambitious games to ever hit the market. Now some of the same team are trying to do that again with modern technology. Call me crazy but I think that has lots of potential as an area to explore in the gaming industry and as far as I can tell there are not many in the space trying to explore that potential.

      Good points. I think Daggerfall quests were also very interesting. I think the mages guild questline had way more variety and more interesting decisions to make than the Mages Guild quests in Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. The Merchants and InnKeeper quests were charming, even though they were simpler quests. Also, the number of factions and quests from each faction were incredible. If they ensure every faction is well developed, like Daggerfall then, this will be a wonderful game. On top of that we have modern visuals, sailing, spell maker and lots of interesting mechanics. Lets hope we get an alpha build by the end of 2025

    personally, I need a more solid foundation and something before giving money I believe that they will deliver what is promised for the backers, but I think what they have as a goal is maybe unlikely to be achievable. not impossible just that it would require somebody like Microsoft or Sony backing them with a huge amount of money to achieve the end goal they have set. I think if they can take the money they have been gifted by people and bring out something that wows me I'm all for it, and I have faith that the world building and stuff will be great. I mean everything they have shown is good so far from seasonal weather to the boats the npc the overall is looking good. I would like a real handwritten aspect and some handcrafter aspects to be shown off as well because using procedural generation for everything isn't great. in my view it's not that it doesn't work but it needs to be done in moderation along with hand built and crafter aspects to be great. this was more longwinded than I intended but I guess I think they can handle it, but I just personally need a little more proof and convincing. I hope they can deliver because if they do the game is basically everything I want in a game.

      Sony would keep it a Playstation exclusive. Not sure how the team would feel about that. Microsoft is interesting, given they have acquired studios making similar games (sort of), but again this discussion will happen once the alpha build comes out. Thats when they talk to publishers. As you said the Alpha build quality will be the key. Let's hope we get that build by the end of 2025.

    I think of morrowind oblivion, Skyrim and eso as their own self contained universes, too many retcones for my little brain to handle. Extreamly excited about province cyrodil and markarth side

    Also disappointed on "retreat from prequelism". Tamriel Rebuilt has always been venerated as almost-canon, this is way too big a jump for me. I like (and agree with) subtropical Cyrodiil choice and introduction of stuff from concept art, but not making up new kings, considering that the chronological difference between Morrowind and Oblivion isn't much.

      I think this sentence brings a bit too much imagination into play than it actually is. Me and Mothpot already answered on another comments that anti-prequelism isn't about coming up with new Cyrodiil - it's about managing expectations and especially correcting overused Oblivion references that was a thing of Anvil release few years ago. In a way, anti-prequelism should be rather considered as developers word instead of one going to the public because we know context in which it doesn't feel like some wild retcon.

    I'll never play morrwind as it is. but i do love to see this sort of stuff for for Morrowind players. Like BS for skyrim players. I for one dont like how they are changing Lore. i mean they guys have the know of whats happened in the games after, For a long time, Where Beyond Skyrim does not. So those guys have no choice but to wing it. They really should have stayed with the Lore and its characters.

      Lore between games being coherent is illusion. Bethesda itself changed a lot in between games - especially with moving cities, renaming them or erasing entirely for smaller game scope. Basically you should consider TES3 separate worldbuilding than TES4 onwards, and same with TES1-2 which were retconned already with PGE1/Redguard/Morrowind. In short, Beth canon is messy. Trying to figure out how to put its increasingly more generic and contradicting lore would be project on its own, and even not sure if worth attempting - so instead, we stick to lore known from TES3-friendly sources and avoid sequels, filling holes with what our brilliant worldbuilders bring. We try to keep Morrowind/TES spirit instead of limiting ourselves to lore that wasn't even here for when those projects started, and that often turn a lot of Morrowind worldbuilding upside down. Trust us, we will bring good things, as we already are doing with TR and SHotN (we are for most part the same people) ^^

      On the contrary, we stick very rigidly to the lore and its characters and let it define every decision that we make. However, on principle, we creatively restrict ourselves to the lore that is communicated to us through TES3 and it peripheral texts such as Pocket Guide to the Empire v1. Much thought has been put into panning the world of TES3 out with greater consideration than the later installments, which were more of a callback to the settings of TES1 & 2 than a successor to TES 3

    I'm a bit disappointed to hear that the mod team is moving away from "Prequelism". I read a faction outline for the Thieves Guild on their forums that they posted once, and in it they would have explored what the Grey Fox was getting up to during this period of time. It's sad to think, that now, the Grey Fox may not even exist in this mod's version of events.

      Spoiler, Grey Fox exists and will be an NPC in Project Tamriel's Cyrodiil - anti-prequelism mostly tries to avoid assumptions fans would have that we are merely copying Oblivion or that we try to stick closely to (widely different) TES4 setting - old PT Cyrodiil was meant to be filled to the brim with cameos apparently. So it's mostly targeting that.

      That's reassuring then. I suppose I was reading too much into the changing of the character "Countess Millona Umbranox" for one "Queen-Regent Milona Conomorus" But looking back at it now, the Queen's personal circumstances does seem oddly familiar.

      @@tom_stephen tbh they should've completely embrace "pre-rewritten reality" approach and put "similar, but different" characters in their places. Instead, Project:Tamriel team sometimes goes out it's way to dunks on "Oblivion bad" take (as for example "Illiac Bay" completely retcons The Miracle of Peace (because it's "Oblivion lore") and spawns back a ton of kingdoms few cells in size).

      ​@@Barmaglott17 A ton of petty kingdoms sure as hell does sound a lot more interesting than whatever Oblivion tried to feed us. Also one cell in Morrowind is about 4 times bigger than one in any of the later games.

    Gold Coast has been a long time coming, and I'm glad they are taking their time, the effects are astonishing. I love the vast open countryside that gives Cyrodiil a distinct feeling from the dangerous terrain of Morrowind and Skyrim

    It pisses me off that they're all just hunched in a Discord server not documenting much of anything. I pointed out that they've got this giant forum and wiki they're not using and they got all "dOn'T cRiTiCiZe WhAt YoU dOn'T uNdErStAnD" when I offered to help with lore documentation, because they sort of just spitball in there and don't have a single source of truth on what's actually canonical to the project and what's old news (and they argue about it because of course they do).

      To be clear everyone on the team was very receptive and cordial in their response to being (rightfully) criticized on our incomplete documentation Between making the thing and writing about the thing a lot of us have been focused on the former with only a few of us picking up the slack on the latter Such is the nature of these volunteer projects: progress follows motivation Nonetheless our wiki is a continuously developing project that we are slowly but surely adapting, and documentation is a very important thing to us especially as of late We appreciate your offer to help us on that front, but the intent behind the one developer's response you took offense to was to say "a lot of our discord theorycrafting is not representative of our final decisions." What is said on the discord and what is put into our planning are two different things

      @@mothpot Just to expand a little bit on what you said (and for anyone else reading this), the team would probably be happy for someone to collect and compile the information. I actually got my start with TR/PT by compiling info from forums and meetings and using it to update the text of the Great House write-ups (Gnomey helped a great deal). This was back in 2017 when it wasn't as centered around Discord, but they were happy that I did this. I'd offer to do it now but I have to focus on RL

    Longevity is much more important than having all kinds of bells and whistles that take away from the experience. If i'm playing RPG video game, i want to have more choices in dialogue, not someone spelling out only a few choices for me, or having to watch another cutscene because of an "event" happening. Why then not watch a movie instead? I've also seen some people complaining over the years, about how every game needs a very deep story and every character an almost as deep back story, otherwise there's no "emotional" connection and it's not worth the investment of one's time because of this. It's mostly nonsense to me though, because any game throws you in it's world and you need to survive, emotional connection and deep story or not. There's lot's of games out there, that have (almost) no story and are mighty replayable. I'm not saying story isn't important, because it is for certain genres of games. Adventure games are the first that come to mind, with RPG's coming second. The Wayward Realms seems to aim for a balance between having story and having the freedom to create your own.

      Goblin questline is going to explore the fate of a once powerfull tribe that got split in the past. This tribe, the Broken Fang, is now trying to survive and regain control over the Strident Coast, competing with two other major tribes in the area.

But for real though, I am glad to see that we are going to have the option for non hostile interactions with the non playable beast-folk races, I also heard that Minotaurs are also going to get a fleshed out more in Project Cyrodiil to? Which if that is true, I cant wait to see quests involving them, since they were done the dirtiest out of the non-playable beast-folk races imo. The children of Morihaus and Alessia should have gotten more then just being hostile mobs for the player to mow down.

    they can use the same creation engine and reuse some assets nd stuff to save time and man power, but id like a return to the old attribute system. I think spin off games would be a good way to experiment with systems to see what fits. imagine attributes like morrowind or oblivion, as well as a skill tree like Skyrim. but instead of boring skilltree perks like flat damage increases, they could have unique playstyle changing stuff, since attributes like strength will be controlling your weapon damage now. or maybe something entirely new. spinoffs could just be used to figure out how to implement it and iron out the kinks before using it in a mainline game.

      Good point. These could be playgrounds for teams within Bethesda that could help main game releases. Also we have a mod that adds attributes, classes, birth signs to Skyrim. I showcase it in the current playthrough on the channel. The leveling is like Morrowind and I love it!

    I would prefer if he was more correcly splitted into chimer/dunmer, color wise, it's way too subtle here also for the voice ehh, it's sounds way too young and innocent, i think it would have been better to AI voice him using his morrowind voice as a base In morrowind all tribunal god had distored voices, but dagoth ur had a really nice voice it's funny, but it also make sense since they are false gods

    I mostly paid into kickstarter hearing stories from some of the developer's who recently graduated college struggled to get their foot in the game industry, I can sympathize with them and I can relate with their difficulties starting their career because I'm in same boat with my own career path. I never played Daggerfall, the only Bethesda games that I have touched was Fallout 3, Skyrim, Fallout 4, Obilivion, Fallout 76, Elder Scrolls Online and Starfield. I have played procedural generated games outside of Starfield like No Man's Sky, Minecraft and the original Diablo.

    such an ambition, but as usual, I'm afraid, reality will make a hard check later on. E.g. take wind simulation, why on Earth you need it in a fantasy RPG? And at the same time, dialogs are voiceless an dump a lot of text on players, as if it is 1999

    The elder scrolls universe deserves a spin off game, but that shouldn’t just mean a stripped down version of the normal formula. It should be something different like a more linear focused game with stronger writing or an rts. We already have really good ES mods for CK3. I would kill for a game set in the world in the style of BG3

      Thats just not doable with the complexity they aim for with their virtual game master. Having to voice over text lines simply limits the possible scale. Though simple machine TTS might be added later.

    Thats so great and that mod is really well made, looks like it's all fully vanilla and integrated ! Morrowind is still my favorite of the three but i always prefered Skyrim to Oblivion, now that Skyrim can benefit from attributes like a real TES it's even better ! Now only need a weapon/armor degradation mod of that quality (same system as morrowind/oblivion with close to perfect integration) (there was one actually that was almost perfect, "Item Durability" but it worked with the net script framework that was never updated for AE sadly) and a classic TES magic mod (adding classic effects like burden, reflect... with spellmaking and good integration)
