Is Hollywood Lying About CGI?

In this video we discuss the recent trend of downplaying CGI in movies and tv series in favor of celebrating Practical FX. We explore how many seem to always want to compare the best of CGI in the past, to the worst of today, and explore how CGI has become a bad word, and the lengths film makers go to to minimize it's usage in their films.

      Thanks! I simulated the clothes in Houdini, but I wouldn't want to model anything in Houdini really.. it's great at procedural modeling, but not so good at traditional box modeling, which is what you would want to do for clothes. And Marvelous Designer is the best tool to model most clothes.

    Hello, Thanks for the video. Alright if I ask you something? I been using all the other programs and got interested in Houdini especially with the dynamics that always got praised over the years in background. I keep hearing people going on about how different and difficult modelling and animation is in it and was wondering why ?

    • @crafthive
      @crafthive Před 7 dny

      It's built for proceduralism. So when it comes to modeling, it excels at procedural modeling, but lacks some of the tools needed to box model the same way you would in Maya or Blender. It definitely feels more natural to box model in Maya or Blender than Houdini. Animation tools were always just lagging behind in houdini as they haven't really pushed Rigging and Animation tools until recently. But that seems to be changing. Rigging has gotten much better since they introduced KineFX and their latest release has some nice animation tools. So we'll see what comes out of that over the next few years.

(VFX artist/game developer) I'm in college now, but I chose the entrepreneurship course because this is what is available at the university. My questions are: Does the company in that field really rely on what degree you have? Can I become a VFX artist or game developer even though I have different finished programs? ( Entrepreneurship)

    This one isn’t to my personal liking, it feels like too much gold. The corsage looks like it’s made of metal and the skirt looks a bit poofy and messy for me. It looks like a literal take on the animated dress, which is difficult to translate due to different mediums. Cinderella’s dress in the live action looks totally different from the animated original but still has the Cinderella feeling to it, it’s grand and beautiful, not an exact copy like your render of Belle’s. I like the cosplay example at 1:17, it actually looks like a Princess dress with smaller details and different hues of yellow to look more elegant and rich. It looks like a great live action interpretation without copy and pasting the original’s dress.

    VFX isn't going away and it's worth it if you're actually really good at it. The actual problem is that if you're new you need work really hard to meet the right people. I get all my work from people who have already worked with me and I was able to leave a good impression with them. I don't interview with strangers. I don't deal with recruiters on LinkedIn. You have to get to this position of credibility to survive. It's hard, but if you have the appropriate skills you can do it. You need to guard your reputation as if it's the most important thing in the universe. One huge tip I can give newcomers is that productions have a lot of moving parts, and just because you hear about one or actually get an offer to work on one, doesn't mean you won't be waiting up to 6 months for it to actually start. It always takes forever for a new production to start. So your options are limited to waiting for something to start or dealing with the chaos of getting up to speed on a production that has already begun. The latter is typically horrible for a few weeks. Especially if you know a better way for doing certain things and have to dismantle a production pipeline to get it right. Don't shy away from doing that though. That is what builds the reputation that is required to do well.

From there I used spot lights with gobo filters of animated caustic lights to create the animate underwater caustic god rays. If you're using Karma, there's a 'Karma Fog Box' node that should get you most of the way there. Hope that helps!

I think the pace at which LLM's and other AI tools improvement is insane, and the new AI cluster training for most of them is getting exponentially larger. 10 years ago, AI wasn't really even a real thing, and now each year it 3X's in improvement. People being worried about job security and being replaced is a real issue, as you should tackle the problem head on, not after its happened.

  • @MWB_FoolsParadisePictures

    I think the trend toward invisible CGI a vital one. It shouldn't even be a controversial topic that audiences don't want their live action film's FX to look like a cartoon or a video game. If I want to consciously ogle graphics for ogling's sake, I'll play a video game or watch an animated film. Blending FX seamlessly into films used to be the default, and we should return to that. When I watch CG heavy sequences that appear as such, my entire brain glosses over and I feel literally nothing. I'm just waiting for the sequences to end so I can get back to the character interactions that make cinema compelling. Idgaf about spectacle if at least some part of me isn't tricked into feeling like it's really happening. Luckily for VFX artists, hidden CGI will require the studios (eventually) to stop rushing projects and overworking artists then obsessing over nitpicking their inevitably imperfect work.

    • @robertoso8796
      @robertoso8796 Před měsícem

      now that photorealistic cgi is the norm i really am not impressed or inspired in any way by the vast majority of films for at least a decade. i've seen 4 movies in a theater in that time but i used to go to pretty much every big movie for years. it's so stupid finding out that some mundane inconsequential scene is completely digital because that's somehow easier than rigging a car with a camera and shooting logan driving between point A-B in an afternoon. what's the difference between a cartoon like toy story and infinity war? if your movie contains cgi in more than 25% of runtime it should be an animated flick.

    • @MWB_FoolsParadisePictures
      @MWB_FoolsParadisePictures Před měsícem

      @@robertoso8796 Even when the rendered objects often look photorealistic (which they still quite often don't to me... they often look more like 2023 AI art), they are also still visible as CGI much of the time based on the animation, the way the camera moves with complete freedom, the way particles move in the air, and the way light photons hit things. And yeah, even just knowing if a movie is CGI-heavy, it's a bummer. I used to go to movies to see what real cars look like when they flip over and explode (etc.) and all the real life elements of chaos that go with it. There's a real power to it. I don't want an artist's poetic imagining of it based on a studio's perfectionism. I want the real thing or I'm not really seeing anything.

    VFX is actually still good paid, however not 3d, but Nuke Specialists still make good money. But you need at least 5 year exp. in the industry. The rest is going down, step by step. Reason are to many for to little jobs, bad payment and a huge competition thru cheap countries. For example, an Indian studio takes less the 10% for same job. That still leaves room for very good artists, but even they are more and more under pressure.

    No one in the industry is using Blender for VFX. It's a fact. These blender kiddies come into it thinking they'll keep using Blender for life because blender youtubers (who never worked in the industry) tell them blender will take over and it is an industry standard. It won't happen. They get this over-bloated perception of a false reality. They also believe if they get hired they'll immediately start working on features. It just isn't true. Chances are as a junior you won't even be able to do remote work because you know less than you think you know. VFX and animation studios have been struggling for at least 20 years. A single film can bankrupt a studio. Also wages are probably the biggest problem which is why many outsourced and trained people (not artists) in China and India because labor was dirt cheap and labor laws are non-existent so long as the government gets a cut. These unskilled people learned the software without having much creativity to start with and worked their way up to some level of proficiency. Studios folded and these people started posting on Fiverr and making REALLY BAD courses on Udemy, dragging that whole platform down. It's a race to the bottom for studios with some not able to get clients in anymore because they can't afford to go any lower on bids... RIP AXIS STUDIO. Ironically there's a lot of work out there.. A LOT. I think a lot of the work will end up continuing to be dished out to remote studios with main studios managing, depending on scope. VFX isn't going away whether it's for film, TV, gaming, virtual and life production.

    I was in the industry and lost my job 10 months ago. I tried everything to see if something would work out. Somehow, I managed to match my salary in 5 months by selling AI images on Etsy, haha, who would have guessed? I will never go back to VFX
