I am going to use Cambodia as my base in retirement early next year. Getting a 1 year visa. I am thinking Siem Reap over PP as I love the temples, more laid back vibe, etc. I worked in Singapore 2005-2007 and have been to Cambodia 2013, 2015 & 2017. I love Chiang Mai, Thailand. Gonna follow you on your adventures.

I am very happy for you because a lot of us Khmer Americans (I’m not trying to speak for all of us, just for those I’ve grown up with or have seen around me) are not fluent in Khmer and cannot read it whatsoever. We still have community, but even those of us who are older, like Gen X (my parents’ age) also cannot read Khmer though they can speak it, so they couldn’t pass it down to my siblings and I. And I feel like being in America really just waters down and whitewashes those of us who are not white. My partner and I are having a son any day now and I really want to push myself to learn Khmer so we can pass it onto him. My partner is Cambodian and I am mixed with Cambodian, Chinese, and Vietnamese, but only grew up in American/Khmer culture. I really want to learn more about my ethnicities, so you’ve helped motivate me and make me want to go to Cambodia even more!
Wow, thanks for sharing that. And congratulations on your growing family!:) Yes, I can totally see how it's hard being in an environment where the language not predominant or where resources are not very accessible. It felt like swimming upstream to try to find resources to learn the Khmer language, but I found that even simple things like making a clock with the Khmer numbers for my room or buying myself a Khmer/English kids book from Amazon helped me be exposed to the language in a really non-intensive way while starting the learning process! It kept things light and fun too.:) I wish you and your partner the best as you start your new journey as parents!! I'll hopefully be posting more about my language learning journey and share some resources I found helpful because I would love to see more people learn the Khmer alphabet/language!:)
