I love your thought process!...'Summer is for Cults' needs to be on a t-shirt! I put Tender is the Flesh on my summerween tbr because I connected cannibalism with cookouts. I landed on; Diavola (book to read in the dark), Tender is the Flesh (horror or thriller), What Lies in the Woods (book with five or more word title), You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight (book with night sky on cover), House At The Bottom of the Lake (takes place in summer). Plus I have the Literally Dead book club pick Middle of the Night.

Those all look fabulous. I read Black Sheep a few months ago & really enjoyed it. I’ll be interested in your reviews of Lute & Break The Bones, which has been sitting on my shelf for years. I’m currently reading Diavola before I start my Summerween tbr and loving it. 30 pages in & I’m already thinking it might go on my 2024 top ten list 😂

11/22/63 is my all time favorite book. Not just by Stephen King but by everyone. You don't want to dkip that. Gallows Hill by Darcy Coats was amazing! It had me scared and sobbing during one part. I liked the cover of Murder Road too. I love Simone St.James

Dead Eleven was SO good! And my name is Kayla, and I listened to the audiobook at night in the dark during a bad storm with headphones - the narrator dropped to a sinister voice during that one scene croaking, "kaaAyylaaa.. kAAayYLaa.." oh hell no. 🤣

Ugh I hate there being so many unknowns left…like yes he got rid of the jasmine “problem”.. but now they have this random baby. Where will they tell people they got it? If they try to pretend Cecelia had the baby, their family would know that wasn’t true..Is Cecelia’s mom loyal enough to keep the secret of her son-in-law having sex with a head? I guess given his job he could conjure up some fake paperwork saying that Jasmine was artificially inseminated..but I just wish there would have been a few paragraphs of Marcos and Cecelia discussing what they planned to do going forward. Or what would have been really crazy is if Marcos revealed that he already had all of the paperwork ready/the cover up planned out.. proving that he really had just been using Jasmine the entire time when most readers thought he had fallen in love.

I had no idea The Watchers was a book! The trailer before Dune 2 SOLD me (also love Dakota Fanning) so I'm picking this up immediately LOL

My favorite book is called Mr. Fix It and Miss Sue. I bought it on Amazon. It came out this year, so it's not very popular but I love it!❤

This sounds like gross for the sake of being gross. I feel like something from the farmed perspective would be more interesting,particularly maybe people who have already evaded the system and try to help others

I disagree with these points. I think the books says a lot. It feels more Orwellian (especially 1984) and also a lot like the jungle. Those books could have a similar read of "what even happens" and "whats the point." I think it uses the cold and distant simple perceptive instead of other characters/ victims very much on purpose to make it personal as most readers are invested in a protagonist (then horrifying when you are emotionally invested in someone who does something awful). There is also an adage of "the more specific, the more universal" and I think it applies here. I found it really refreshing to have a limited perspective. It reminds me of real life, and I think that was the point because in many ways it is real life. In real life there are issues but not everyone knows how to solve it especially while being in-trenched in a system, we only ever see parts. It feels like an allegory or fable in some ways because obviously people would go vegan before going to cannibalism. I read this book in a day as it was impossible to put down. The way the reader is introduced to the world and the themes is very organic and very well written. There is so much themes and commentary to unpack in a short 200 pages, but it doesn't feel overstuffed. It reflects our world and its issues today in scary ways (especially considering it was pre-covid). I think it is a book that makes you think about ourselves and our morals and choices. Its not about direct answers. I find that more engaging and critical thinking to be more introspective. I will say I feel like the second half of the book is weaker then the first half. The horrible things really escalate 2/3rds of the way in and then ease up to have an ending that will surprise some people (all the signs where there). I found myself checking and re-checking if this was written by a woman. This ties into major criticism I’ve been seeing about the book being weak on delivery, awful to women, or torture porn but I think the how evil and awful is intentional. It is cold and distant and brutal not glorifying and gratuitous. Though I will admit I wish it was toned down. You are supposed to be uncomfortable, there are cartoonishly evil people (those characters are desensitized, especially the rich), and you aren’t going to get a resolution or handed the moral high ground in regards to all the themes and commentary. I think we are used to heavy handedness and being spoon feed what to do and think when issues are brought up. This is book that presents horror for the purposes to break you out of the normalization and desensitization as well as highlight how we can be sucked into it so easily by the end as well.

Thanks for making this video; I completely agree and had the same experience reading the book as a vegan. Yes it was gross but why? The author could have made such a good point, all the setup was there, but nope. Those people really did THE MOST not to eat a bean 😅

Since you loved Tress of the Emerald Sea and want some longer books, I would suggest to try out Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series! :D 1k pages per book so far, 4 books out with the 5th one coming later this year. Great characters, great worldbuilding and magic system. Sanderson does kind of lean to simpler prose though, I really don't mind it myself cause I love everything else about his work. Also, I love how concerned your kitty looks at the start when you're dropping books LOL, what a cutie! ;-;

Welcome to BookTube! I love all your book shelves! I love what you said about the escapism of horror. I don't read horror but actually for the flip reason. I feel like the world is so heavy so I would rather read lighter stories. But I love how reading can be different things to different people....or the same thing, just a different expression. Books are awesome that way!
