The Leedstown Resolutions: Connecting Consumerism and Revolution in the Northern Neck with Phil Levy
The Leedstown Resolves were one of the first protests against the 1765 Stamp Act and influenced public opinion in other American colonies. In this engaging talk, Dr. Levy explores how consumerism in the colonies shaped response to the Stamp Act, influenced revolutionary politics, and ultimately helped drive revolutionary sentiment on the Northern Neck.
Dr. Philip Levy is a Professor of History at the University of South Florida and is an Organization of American Historians Distinguished Lecturer. He is the author of several books many of which deal with George Washington both as a person and as a national icon. Where the Cherry Tree Grew: The Story of Ferry Farm, George Washington’s Boyhood Home (2013) and George Washington Written Upon the Land: Nature, Memory, Myth, and Landscape (2015) focus on the places of Washington childhood. The Permanent Resident: Excavations and Explorations of the Life of George Washington (2022), winner of the prestigious Society for Historical Archaeology James Deetz Award, explores the many sites of Washington’s life and how their stories have been shaped by archaeology and issues of memory and commemoration. His newest book, Yard Birds: The Lives and Times of America’s Urban Chickens, tells a very different story from his other work and explores the fascinating relationships, both past and present, between urban areas and domestic fowl.

Interesting video. My mother’s ancestors were some of the first settlers on the Neck in the 1650’s. Maj. Edward Dale and his wife Diana Skipwith were in St.Mary Whitechapel parish and were 13th generation grandparents to my mom. I’m hoping to visit the area in the future.

That area of Lancaster County was one of the earliest areas of English settlement in the Northern Neck. St. Mary's Whitechapel has a beautiful cemetery, and nearby Lancaster VA Historical Society is a treasure-trove of genealogical papers and material. The Clerk's office in Lancaster was one of the few in VA that did not suffer a fire, so many of the records are still available. Let me know if you need more info!

@@lisahull1249 thanks. I know other descendant of the family who are genealogists have dug into those records over the years and we have a huge book taking the family line with records down to my 7x great grandparents in Tennessee. But if I get the chance to come back to Virginia, a trip to the courthouse and historical society is on the list!

The narrator definitely doesn't have THE strongest NNK accent but it's certainly there...notice how he said, "throughout?" Reminds me of my grandparents. Though I grew up in Richmond County and am proud to be from the area, I could never live there again. When I go back to visit, it boggles me how little has changed. In fact, it seems every time I return, it looks more and more isolated and run-down.

Rob, This area offers many pleasures consistent with a rural lifestyle, love of early American/Colonial history and the outdoors. As Daniel mentioned, safety is great so children can have more freedom than is possible in other more suburban settings; friendly neighbors are the norm, the way of life here. If you would like more info on life in the Northern Neck, you are welcome to contact me at 804.333.1919.
