We are Trey and Kylie Gray, we are a family of 5 homesteading in the Cascade Mountains of Central Oregon. We are located in a high desert in garden zone 3 with a frost risk all year. Even in this harsh climate we still mange to grow a lot of our own food for our family. Our goal is to heal our land, grow our own food, and hopefully be an encouragement that it is possible to grow abundantly in this area.

Transitioning the Greenhouse from Summer to Fall
Use the dough hook on the stand mixer to wash the butter on low speed, after draining the buttermilk 1st time. Use ice cold filtered water because chlorine will change flavor. After water is clear, pour it out, add salt and let the stand mixer do all the dirty work. After salting speed up the mixer and the butter will come off the bowl wall. Just pack the butter into containers. Easier not harder. I have a you tube video about this, czcams.com/video/bgFQo4RXoYY/video.html

Nice video. I'm in Graham Washington
You have a frost risk all year round?! 😱
Your garden is looking good. The only thing I grew this summer was Malabar spinach, which did very well, but I found that I did not like it. LOL. I didn't plant more things because I thought I'd be having knee surgeries, but since they are on hold right now, I will go ahead and plan a fall garden. Still planning. I was amazed to find that the tomatoes did very well last winter but not in the summer. Go figure. Anyway, one day at a time sweet Jesus. Have a blessed day. Hugs to everyone from central FL.
The garden looks great. I’m glad your garden recovered. What is your favorite thing to grow?
The garden looks pretty lush on camera and full of color and growth. Good to see things are bouncing back for you. 🤗
What is the most worthwile crop for you to grow in your area?
Great question!
bodacious!
♥️
Thank you!
You bet!
I know you’ve moved across the country. What’s your funniest moving story?
❤️
Ohhhh, my Q&A contribution! Can we have a cow/any animal update? Who's in milk, when will you rebreed, plans for your current heifers?
Definitely!
Talk about scorcher we had 115° over weekend & cool down today of 110 - 112!😂 What kind of berry are those they are cute😊
They are currants. Yeaahhh 115 is miserable.
PS i hear the animals talking!😁 You must have alot of them showing them especially chickens would be 👍🏼 nice😊
Okay!
Fyi, im a Newbie, saw your info popup on phone this am! You look like Oregon or Wyoming? We are in drought AZ & cant gtow anything outside except cactus!🌵🥵
I am in Central Oregon, Welcome!
I love the idea of you doing a Q&A. I'm pretty sure I've seen all of your videos. One question, though - did you & Trey meet in West Virginia (or Virginia?) during your college days? Or do I have that wrong? I think it's so cool that you went on a "missions trip" to China. Here in central FL we are getting lots of rain from storm/hurricane Debby, but I am thankful that we have electricity so I can watch your video and a few other ones too. My knees are very unhappy with all this rain, LOL. Ouch. I always try to make a little comment on your videos, but I don't always comment on every other CZcams channel that I follow. Have a blessed & fun day. Hope you don't get any hard freezes for the rest of the summer. I'm thinking about & planning what to plant for the fall/winter garden here. Hugs from central Florida.
I always love your comments Bonnie, I look forward to whatever encouraging words you give. Q and A coming soon!
What's your state & city? You are in cold atea! Im in AZ 🥵🔥
We are in central Oregon.
Good morning! You’ve been on my mind….I think there is a song in there…lol. It’s good to hear an update that you’re all doing well. It’s funny to hear you say that you never comment. I feel funny not commenting on certain channels 🥴 I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a current. Yesterday I picked a nice basket of blueberries. It’s fair to say blueberries are not my favorite. However, the ones I picked were amazing. It’s a testament to eating food fresh. I’m heading out to water now, I planted my first fall crops this year. I’m frustrated with the lack of production in the garden but I think the excessive heat that came early really took a toll on the garden. We usually don’t really heat up until August but not this year. Anyway, good to see you, I hope you have a wonderful week. God Bless you.
I bet your fall crops will be amazing. It's cooling down so much for us this month, which is crazy, and all my crops are already doing better. I love receiving comments ha! If you like sour then you will love currents if you do not then you will not like them all at. Ohh fresh blueberries are amazing but I do love a good berry of any kind.
It would be great to enjoy a Q&A get to know you better video with Trae & yourself.. I need to catch back up with you again more.. Your family is growing up. How did you and Trae meet? And kids? Etc.. Not sure of spelling of your names..?

It was lovely to meet you too! We did have a nice time. Thanks for your kind words!
I've been thinking about you there with all the weather Ups & Downs and especially all the fires in your area and where I lived in Crook & Deschutes Counties 1988-2002. So many fires Everywhere.
It's been a wild weather year. We typically have a crazy up and downs but this has been crazy. All the fire by us are out. Only one got close to put us on level 1.
Good to see this video today. I have been thinking of you all as I heard of the fires. Your positive attitude and drive to not give up is inspiring. Continue to trust in what the Lord has in store for you and the garden. You’ll be blessed one way or another. Happy Anniversary 🥂 ❤️
Well thank you!
Hello! Wow, your temperature is hotter than ours is in FL. So far it's only gotten up to 95 here, but it will hit 3 digits in August. I'm happy that you all are enjoying the fellowship with your community garden. Concerning your well, would you legally be able to catch & save rainwater to use for your gardens? I know that some states like Colorado prohibit collecting rainwater (go figure, sheesh). Enjoy the rest of your summer. Blessings from central Florida.
Hotter than FL, thats sad. ha! Yeah we can collect water. Just would need a whole lot for that garden with no rain in summers.
The grasshoppers are the worst! They haven't found my garden...yet. 😬
Oh good! let’s hope they stay away.
@@BlackWhiteandTheGrays fingers crossed! If I could get the aphids out of my greenhouse then I'd be set!
Amen! I so needed to hear this today. I wasn't able to plant a garden this year. Family issues and other things. I surrendered it to the Lord and made peace . I've been called to give it all to him. Thank you❤🥰
❤️
Hi!! I learned about your channel from Jess at Roots and Refuge! I appreciate you sharing. And I agree with you Jess is amazing!! And I’m encouraged to go to that conference next time. ❤ Prayers your way for a successful garden!! 🙏🏻
Welcome!! 💕
is there a really and cheap editoring when you are first starting out besides phone as that is all I have and limited money..widow..Patricia
The only thing I have used is iMovie. It's what has been free for me. I filmed, edited, and posted all from my phone when I first got going.
think its been that way for me..the second year like this..in Florida..panhandle
That can be discouraging. Keep at it! 💜
heatwave over here in NH too. We don't have an AC either and the nights have only been in the high 60s. UGH. And ridiculous humidity. My house is like in the 70s over night. I'm really looking forward to seeing this pass for sure. potato prices have went way up here too. I noticed yesterday it's over $5 a bag when they were a bit under $4 last week.
I am hearing from a lot more people that do no have ac. I didn't realize how common it was. Potatoes are probably going to keep going up and up, unfortunately.
Wow, someone who understands my climate! We are also in zone 3, but we are in Sublette County, Wyoming. We MIGHT have 40 frost free days in the growing season (NOT consecutive), and it can freeze/snow ANYTIME. We are also experiencing this heat wave, though our high temps are low 90’s. It has definitely been a VERY strange year, but they are predicting a hard, snowy winter. We didn’t have a winter at all, snow wise, this past winter. Glad to have found your channel. ❤️
Ahhh I am so glad you found the channel! I love having other zone 3ers and it's actually rare to find other gardeners that get frost all year. We didn't get nearly the snow we needed. Lord willing this year we both will get some good snow.
Hi ❤ nice to meet you ❤️❤️🥰
Welcome!
You should do more of these videos!
I have an idea for one but finding the time to sit and film it together is the problem. Hopefully by the end of summer we can get one similar out. Sports and other things are taking up our weekends currently.
@@BlackWhiteandTheGrays I know the feeling of not having enough time in the day! I told your sister I see you more than I see them 😂 gonna have to try to get back out there sometime to visit.
I tried purple potatoes for the first time this year and the seem to be pretty hardy. They taste the same to me as other potatoes. I had a lovely patch of potatoes but mice came in and ate all of the patch and the only potatoes I got were from one five gallon bucket that I had stuck leftover seed potatoes in. I am in Virginia, 7a-7b, we have one ac in the bedroom right now as the house one died and we use a couple of extra fans.
Oh dang mice! I was raised a good part of my childhood in wv, the humidity is what always got me.
This is our first time growing purple potatoes in Michigan, zone 6. They are chunkier than the red variety we have grown in the past!
stupid question but can you each walking onions those are the only ones i seem to grow but never ate them
Not a stupid question at all. Yes you can. The tops can be eaten as green onions and the bulbs are ready to eat at any point but are larger late summer. But they are still small.
I saw your picture on Jessica's video! That was a great picture & looks like you had a really enjoyable time at the homesteaders' event! Great garden update. I find your variable temperatures incredible, wow. I noticed the jump in potato prices here, as well. Our world is crazy but not surprising, according to prophecy. Hope you all enjoyed the movie! Hugs & blessings from central Florida!
We enjoyed the movie, just me and the twin. Trey took our oldest to church camp for the week, they just got back. I know I just hate seeing how crazy prices keep going. People are struggling.
😢
We did enjoy the movie. Trey was at church camp with our oldest this week so I just had the twins. Good quality time spent. But glad they are back home! Yeah I know, I am just having a hard time watching the prices jump to high before my eyes. It’s already hard on so many people.
Came over from Jess. Love the church community garden.
Welcome!!
Wonderful to hear the garden update. You’ve got a great attitude about it which is wonderful. Funny, I was wondering what your t-shirt said! I harvested garlic last Friday. It’s my first attempt at growing it so wasn’t sure what to expect. Some are very good size and the others are on the smaller size. Onions and potatoes will be ready very soon. It has been hot here too. I like a little heat but it’s been high 90’s and I don’t like that so much when I need to get stuff done. Your perspective, “Lord willing” is the best! 🩷 I hope your day is blessed beyond measure. 🤗
Some years my garlic is amazing and others not so much. I can't figure it out. Yeah this heat is a bit much harder to wok outside. Thank you Cheryl!
I also subscribed as I am a Christian also and it’s not my garden but the Lords and we are his faithful servants, I always remember why Adam was created in the first place so surrendering your garden to the Lord I totally understand praying the lord sends you rain to fill your well and to bring your garden back to his glory in Jesus name Amen
Thank you!
I doubled the size of my garden was so pumped as everything was just great, then a herd of deer came in and stomped and ate my garden up b4 I saw them it just broke my heart, I put up deer alarms and had to replant I never knew deer would eat night shade veggies but yeah ate tops on my bell peppers and tomatoes, ate okra down to the ground , stomped on my cucumbers and cleaned out my zuchinni, squash, and my baking pumpkins. I live in Texas and can grow till December so yeah I bit the bullet and replanted so I can get something.
Yeah I can be so hard but good for you for not giving up and replanting!
Oh Kylie I will be praying for you guys through this season!!! I wanted to go so bad to the homesteaders conference but just couldn’t get away from the farm. I pray you have a good trip and a wonderful time and that you come back so encouraged!!!
I hear that, maybe one day you can get some time and head up there!
I may not be a gardener but i definitely needed to watch this video today! Love you Ky❤
Love you!
It's just tomatoes, there will be other good tomato years. Let go of the plan you had in your mind. Good side is, that you can now reserve your energy instead of working in the garden soo much. Could be you will be needing it soon, or you didn't even notice that you need some time for yourself. Do what feels good, if that means give the garden another shot, good. But I'd fully lean into what feels good and is within your capacity.
