UNICEF Innocenti | Ending child labour
Despite significant progress, some 160 million children are still engaged in child labour worldwide. Child labour not only violates these children’s rights to education, safety and leisure, it also risks trapping them in exploitative and often hazardous work environments.
What can be done? Education is key. Making school universal has helped reduce child labour worldwide. And, because children from disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to be involved in labour, social protection matters, too. Expanding social protection programmes, such as universal cash transfers to vulnerable families, can bolster school participation and reduce child labour.

I really appreciate this insightful discussion and the diverse perspectives shared on the involvement of young individuals in armed groups. The viewpoints expressed shed light on crucial aspects of this complex issue. However, it's essential to recognize that some individuals, whether victims or perpetrators, are driven by deeply rooted beliefs and values. To address these challenges effectively, we must ensure that our interventions are comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and inclusive. Education and reorientation programs should be tailored to resonate with local belief systems, avoiding any imposition that may evoke feelings of colonization or alienation. Furthermore, while maintaining professionalism is crucial, it's equally important to directly involve representatives from the contexts being discussed. This approach will help amplify the voices of young people, positioning them as drivers of change in their communities. As a peacebuilding facilitator in Nigeria, I advocate for inclusive collaborations that offer holistic, context-specific solutions to African issues. While the panelists have touched upon these points, it's time for action. We must actively engage young people in these debates and discussions, empowering them to contribute meaningfully to shaping their future. In conclusion, I urge UNICEF and other stakeholders to consider these perspectives and prioritize inclusive approaches in addressing the complexities of youth involvement in armed groups. Together, we can pave the way for a more peaceful and prosperous future for all. My View. Thank you.

Rough Transcript. This is not entirely accurate but close enough.: this video reviews data collection and analysis methods in impact evaluation. the purpose of an impact evaluation is to measure impacts and understand to what extent this can be attreibuted to the program or policy so that judgments can be made about the program or policy's value. there are many methods for data collection and analysis so it is vital to chose those that are most appropriate to answer the key evaluation questions and assist stakeholder to make decisions about the program or policy. but what are some of the important issues to consider wheb choosing different date collection and analysis methods? we are going to need some help to walk you through this. meet Fadim. he is a monitoring and evaluation specialist at UNICEF and is incharge of evaluating the local child-friendly school initiative. Fadim has done all the necessary background work and established the theory of change, the key evaluation questions and the evaluative criteria. he knows how he will judge the success of the program and test the assumptions made in the theory of change about the program's intended results. Fadim now needs to sit down with his team and decide what data are needed, how to collect them and the best way to analyze the data to answer the key evaluation questions. there are 4 things they need to bear in mind. first, it is most likely that they will need a mix of qualitative and quantitative data from different sources to increase the credibility of the findings and answer the key evaluative questions. 2nd, they will need to examine what data are already available, such as program perfomance and monitoring data, records and communications, external statistics or surveys from government and decide what additional data needs to be collected as part of the evaluation. third, Fadim and his team need to check that they have not overlooked anything. this can be done by creating a matrix showing which data collection and analysis methods will be used to answer each key evaluation question. and fourth, Fadim will need to check that the selected methods are doable in terms of time, capacity and financial resources. there are some particular data collection and analysis issues that Fadim needs to be mindful about and address. impact evaluations often have to draw conclusions about large populations, where it is rarely possible to collect data from every member of that population. so a sampling method must be used to collect a representative data. Fadim child-friendly school initiative worked with over 600 children and teachers at 4 different schools. so he will need to decide how to sample them at both the experimental and control sites to assess the program's impact. Although sampling is often essential, it does introduce some error into the data as it is never a true representation of the whole population and can be biased by the method of selection. the three types of sampling techniques Fadim can use are, Probability where sampling is random and findings can be generalized. Purposive, where specific information rich cases are choosen through a transparent selection process. and convinience, where cases are selected based on availabilitywhich is quick and easy but less credible. a good sampling strategy will enable appropriate generalization where estimates can be made about the total population based on the findings of the sample that was studied. the quality of data needs to be managed throughout all stages of the evaluation process. the most fundamental aspects to data quality that Fadim needs to pay attention to are 1.Validity. did the data measure what they were intended to measure. 2. Reliability. are the data measured and collected consistently and will the results be the same when measurements are repeated? 3. Completeness. Are the data sufficiently free of gaps? 4. Precision. is there enough detail and specificity? 5. Integrity. Are the data protected from deliberate bias or manipulation? 6. Timelliness. Are the data up to date and available on time? Mistakes in data collection can lead to unusable data or invalid findings and can mislead decision makers. Like all UNICEF evaluations, Fadim should follow the UN evaluation groups ethical guidelines for evaluation. his team should also consult the ethical research involving children website for advise on how to conduct evaluations that involve children, the ethical guidelines for evaluation provide a set of obligations to participants of evaluations which need to be addressed in the design and implementation of the evaluation. respect for dignity and diversity, rights, confidentiality, avoidance of harm. Fadim engages in many best practices when evaluating the child-friendly school initiative in Maldova. For example, he first tests his data collection tools on a small group of teachers, students and parents to find out whether they may be causing a nuisance or affecting participant's rights. he also makes sure that all data collection is anonymous to protect the confidentiality of the participants. when reporting his findings, Fadim knows that to engage a variety of stakeholders, the representation of data should be kept simple. he avoids using complicated or distorted graphs and makes sure to focus on the key evaluation questions with clear visualitions to strengthen the message. he is also mindful and notes any bias in the data and its implications for the findings.

here are common arguments in favor of corporal punishment and counterarguments often presented to debunk them: Argument: "I was spanked, and I turned out fine." Counterargument: Personal anecdotes do not constitute universal evidence. Many individuals who were spanked may have adverse effects that they are not consciously attributing to corporal punishment. Research consistently indicates potential negative outcomes associated with physical discipline. Argument: "It's a traditional method of discipline in our culture." Counterargument: Cultural practices can evolve, and traditions do change. Advocates for ending corporal punishment argue for cultural adaptation that prioritizes positive and non-violent discipline methods while respecting cultural diversity. Argument: "Spanking is effective and provides immediate results." Counterargument: Research suggests that while spanking may stop a behavior temporarily, it is not effective in promoting long-term behavior change. Positive discipline methods that involve communication, setting clear expectations, and offering rewards for good behavior are more effective in the long run. Argument: "Children need to learn respect and discipline." Counterargument: Teaching respect and discipline does not require physical punishment. Positive discipline methods focus on building a respectful relationship between parents and children, fostering communication, and modeling desired behavior. Argument: "It's my right as a parent to discipline my child as I see fit." Counterargument: While parents have a role in disciplining their children, it is subject to legal and ethical limits. Many countries have laws against child abuse, which includes physical punishment that causes harm. The emphasis is on using non-violent and effective discipline strategies. Argument: "I only use it as a last resort when other methods fail." Counterargument: Positive discipline methods offer a range of effective alternatives to corporal punishment. Exhausting these alternatives and seeking guidance from parenting resources, support groups, or professionals can provide parents with a broader toolkit for managing challenging behavior. Argument: "Children won't learn without a consequence for their actions." Counterargument: Positive discipline focuses on providing consequences that are non-violent and related to the behavior. Time-outs, loss of privileges, and discussions about the consequences of actions are effective ways to teach responsibility without resorting to physical punishment. Argument: "Spanking is done out of love and concern for the child's well-being." Counterargument: Love and concern for a child's well-being can be expressed through positive and nurturing discipline. Research shows that children thrive in environments where they feel safe, loved, and respected, which can be achieved without resorting to physical punishment. Debunking these arguments often involves emphasizing the wealth of research supporting positive discipline methods, promoting open communication, and raising awareness about the potential negative consequences of corporal punishment on children's well-being. Positive parenting approaches focus on building a strong and supportive relationship between parents and children, fostering mutual respect, and nurturing emotional and social development.

Innovatively presented; akin to a book that's innovative in its approach and ideas. "Unlocking the Brain's Full Potential" by Alexander Sterling

If you have a low IQ and high levels of testosterone you will have trouble learning and concentrating regardless of the school. The high testosterone manifests itself in inability to concentrate and aggressive actions, greatly increasing during puberty. If you are the child of parents and grandparents who had these same characteristics, the chances of coming from a home rife with drugs, alcohol, violence and crime increase exponentially. Is there a solution? Nothing can change the nature of genetics, but a society with strict rules, a curriculum grounded in fundamentals and strong penalties for misbehavior can at least mitigate some of the negatives and help some to break out of the cycle of failure.
