Welcome to my channel
My name is Graham and I like to tinker with gadgets and electronics. I like to pull things apart to see what makes them tick and hopefully put them back together again, this usually goes OK but not always :-)
If your interested old 8 and 16 bit systems like the Commodore 64 or Amiga, then you've come to the right channel.
I will also be repairing some items and if you would like to donate items for repair or tear-down then please drop me an email on the below email address.

That cliffhanger! Can't wait to see it running! 😉
Blimey, that is some fluff under those keys.
Nooo! Now Commodore won't honor you warranty!
I should have waited until the warranty expired 🤔
Lovely work.
Are torx screws also been used with this machine? Where can i find those?
Commodore mixed and matched screws, just like they did with everything else 🤣
Be sure to replace the 2 film caps and the 250V cap. $2 on Mouser.
what did you use to get all the grime off please.
I used Cif Cream, it’s a mild abrasive, it’s good for textured surfaces; just don’t rub too hard 😁
Just for the challenge I am rebuilding my US 120vac PS using the original transformer ( yes, I chipped it out of the totally potted chunk!) but instead of duplicating it 100%, I am adding an SCR crow bar between the fuse and input to the linear voltage regulator. Then a 5.3 zener diode on the output of the regulator to protect from over voltage, it the output gets over 5.3vdc the zener will trigger the SCR and blow the fuse!
Yeah, the inside of that machine doesn‘t look very enterprise, professional nor premium. Still love them though. ❤
3 year old video yes. are there spacers missing between the motor and chassis.
Hi graham, nice video! What RAM chips did you use? Best regards, DOKTOR64!
Hi, I used HYB514256, they were salvaged from a 512k Ram expansion, the 4 chip version.
Can that rf shield be removed from the amiga.?..i have left mine out for now and have not witnessed any adverse effects.
Yes, you can leave out the top shield, it’s only there for RF shielding.
@@GrahamTinkers Thanks graham..i wasn't too certain if the shielding acted as some form of ground point for the chips etc...
Graham. My Sonic Cell screen stopped working, just blank. It had been in my summer house over winter.
This video was extremely helpful. I had the same issue with the minus key on the keypad. It felt like a loose wobbly tooth...although it did work. It was the same issue. Plunger was cracked the same way as yours. I received the Amiga 500 this was so I have no idea how it could break in that way. Easy enough fix however. Thank you!
Good grief that has to be the worst amiga500 i have ever seen...more amigas we save the better.
Common opinion seems to be to replace the original power supply unit as they can fry the internals apparently..i use a voltage saver with mine...Only had the c64c for a few weeks...thank you for the video.
What or how did it you put it back together with that plastic piece you pried on or cut? Is it ok to reuse the plastic clip that was cut during disassembly? I have to take mine apart to fix the rotary encoder (push button center) and was wondering if it was needed or not.
Could you help me, exatly what kind of buld are you used? :) I'm restored a same lamp, and I want to convert into 12V alarm battery, and I need new bulb. If I'm correct the smaller bulb is E10 socket. But what is the larger one? :)
It’s a BA15D 12v LED lamp. I used 4 x 18650 batteries; I used some cement in the bottom as it’s top heavy.
Why solder Ram chips when there is 1.5mb expansion ram for the belly; that would bring you up to a full 2mb of chip ram
As the board is a Rev 8a I wanted to upgrade it to the full A500+ specs
I recently picked up a BBC Micro and although it powers on, nothing happens, I don't even get the beep sound, I just get a blank screen. I'm not sure if you have an idea what could be wrong? , some say it might be the power supply.
Hi, check the keyboard cable, if the keyboard is not connected or the cable is faulty the Beeb will not boot, you will get a black screen with a flashing cursor. The PSU's are well built, but they have RIFA capacitors which need to be replaced as they will short and let out the magic smoke.
Hallo ich hätte hierzu ein Info Blatt wie kann ich es dir zukommen lasen ?
Hallo, ich habe das Reverse Engineering des Geräts nie abgeschlossen; es steht immer noch auf meiner ToDo-Liste.
Nice work! Nice Amiga! 💪
Ottimo lavoro!.la commodore a fine produzione dell'A500 normale fece un quantitativo limitato di A500 con motherboard plus configurata normale, questo spiega la presenza della motherboard plus nell'A500 normale
there ya go. welcome to 500 subs :) lol. added you with all my other channels to get you there
I've got the same brown tint issue on my 1200, but it flickers back to normal colour occasionally. Any pointers?
Either there is a bad solder joint on the video DAC, it’s starting to fail, replacement chip are easy to get and not expensive. But first try reflowing the solder joints.
So when i flash my gotek with flash floppy 3.39 it shows the version on the display screen of gotek but when i load a .img file or .out file it just says insert system disk. What filename(s) and extensions do you need for it to just load the system disk. Ive followed the forums and documentation but still not working. Any help would be great!
Hi, Are you using the OLED Display? If so, can you see the file names displayed? I download the office disk images from the Roland website, they are .img files. The issue could be related to the config file for FlashFloppy or it could be with the USB drive, I tried a generic flash drive and it worked with ther Gotek but would not load the disks on the Roland, I used a old 32GB Sandisk drive and that worked fine.

Well, I tried it and I screwed up, I guess. I got the new screen in place, pushed the power button, and saw the screen light up with the word Thinkpad (beginning to boot). I pushed and held the power button to turn it off, unplugged it again, (no battery inserted), put the trim on, and then......NO POWER. It will not boot up. No light from the screen whatsoever. I removed the trim again, flipped the panel over, separated the connector, reattached, and nada. nothing. How unbelievably frustrating. What do I do now?
If the laptop powered on after you replaced the screen then is sounds like you did this correctly. Try doing a hard power reset, discontent the power cord and battery, then hold the power button for 30 seconds. I had this issue with an L14 last week, totally dead, power button did nothing; there is a reset hold on the bottom of the L14 to disconnect the internal battery, this resolved the issue.
One can't fix enough A1200s! :) Great job!
That was excellent and a treat to watch and another Amiga saved and my board which is an Amiga 1200 goes in Monday to have hers done thanks to watching this brilliant video so a Standing Ovation to you my friend ,very best wishes Brian
Thank you for this tutorial. I've not tried following your instructions yet. The problem I had was that once I'd fitted and enabled Turbo MMC I couldn't access the FDD. It was connected as normal to the port on the underside of the Master, but once Turbo MMC had been fitted/enabled the FDD no longer functioned. So, how do you get the FDD to work once Turbo MMC is fitted, is my question? When I do the *ROMS command, this is what shows on my sccreen:- ROM F TERMINAL 01 ROM E VIEW 04 ROM D Acorn ADFS 50 ROM C BASIC 04 ROM B Edit 01 ROM A ViewSheet 02 ROM 9 DFS 79 ROM 8 Master MMFS Turbo 7B ROM 7 ? ROM 6 ? ROM 5 ? ROM 4 ? ROM 3 ? ROM 2 ? ROM 1 ? ROM 0 ?
Hi Andrew, you can only have one filing system active at a time, on the Master you can press and hold Ctrl + D and hit Break, this will change to the DFS ROM, or you can enter *UNPLUG 8, which will disable the MMFS ROM. To transfer files from MMFS to Floppy or vice versa, you should find a ROM Image COP114 on one of the virtual disks (disk 300 maybe) and load it into Sideways RAM.
Hi Grahan, thanks for your video, I have the same unit with the same problem. But my knowledge of circuits is nil. I could use the SSM2019 BNZ as a replacement or the THAT 1510 is better, I found them on mouser and I would like to be able to repair it. Thanks again and good material, greetings
Hi Daniel, glad you liked the video and found it helpful. I am not an audio person, so I cannot say if the SSM2019 it better than the THAT 1510/1512 or vice versa, both chips have there own characteristics that people like or dislike. If the chips are not expensive, then get both and see which you prefer, and use the other to tinker with and create your own preamp circuit.
@@GrahamTinkers Thanks Grahan I will do that, since both are valid and the ssm2019 is the same as ssm2019bnz, thanks for your help, I am totally zero in this field of electronics and thanks again for your contribution.
hey, could you please help me in finding spare transformer for this preamp?
Where did I see that Workbench backdrop before? I'm sure your friend will be very happy about this fix... :D Great work!
Very nice fix! I love the detection method :) Cheers!
I have a broken plunger for a 500plus keyboard - where can one get them?
Sometimes you see people selling them on eBay, personally, I just look for listing for broken keyboards and then use them for parts.
@@GrahamTinkers thanks - I was thinking the same, just hoped there was a cost effective route.
I have a similar one.. I'm currently doing on CZcams.. love saving these old machines..
Send me a link so I can watch :-)
Is there a part 2 for this? I can't seem to find it, thanks!
There will be, when I find time to edit the footage 🤔
Good work! I always like future proofing an Amiga. Can't wait for the upgrades part.
Speaking of restauration. New keycaps for Amiga have just been released.
It will be nice to see it restored to its original state :) It's a beautiful machine.
Filming has already be done, just need to find the time to do the editing 🤔
@@GrahamTinkers Uuuu ok, nice :) I hope that You will find some time for editing soon :)
It was indeed in a sorry state for a machine that has been never open. But also, not too bad in some way. Can't wait to see further progress on it! ;)
Yikes, that is most certainly not a well kept system. Actually rather impressively bad condition. At least I really don't feel bad about this a machine that's in this condition ending up being used for some parts. Any plans for a second video on this or even just an update on what you were able save from this? Oh actually just saw your comment below, really glad to hear you found all the amiga chips in working condition! That's certainly a win since it's not like there's an endless supply of those in the world.
Cheers exact same model as my build. Thank you for this video although Ima plan the VAMPIRE V2 route sometime next year
Thank you!
Restore.... always worth a try.. I was lucky to get mine working which was a rust bucket..
That's a late German one, with plugs on the microdrive connectors. And as it's a German model it'll definitely have ROM version MGG. Easy to replace with Minerva, but you'll either have to use the German version of Minerva or change the keyboard, because only the German version(s) will match up with the existing German QWERTZ keyboard.
Interesting to see a Samsung machine being disassembled. Keyboard membrane is 40 years old so disintegration is to be expected. New ones are still available. RE-capping seems to be advised. Don't know what ROM you've got on there . Replacements are available (you could try a Minerva ROM.) Other ways of spending money include some form of mass storage, memory expansion - although the latter may have to be second hand as new hardware has become more difficult to obtain of late. Video seems to die at the 16:30 minute mark ?
Talk about a perfect way to start the day. Watch the start of a QL adventure, before I start mine. Edit: yeah, the keyboard membranes known to disintegrate, when I bought my internal expansions I've been warned to not install them unless I'm prepared to also get a new keyboard membrane. Because they WILL disintegrate upon disassembly.
What is the performance of this screen plz ?
This is a repair video, not a product review, I would recommend you check Lenovo’s technical documentation for the model for more information.
Nice lot. I'm going to definitely tune in to see if that C64 board is a runner or not.
