Jim Henson: How to sell out like an artist
Twitter: x.com/mxwllYT
Jim Henson wanted to make a living as an artist. Finding his craft in puppetry, Henson would not only make a living for himself, but employ thousands of other creatives and inspire millions more. Henson's ability to leverage the attention on his innovative work granted him artistic freedom and resources matched by only a handful of artists in history.

We don't create worlds to escape reality

Walt Disney's life was riddled with mistake and controversy, but in this video I wanted to simply dissect his motivations for creating. To examine the forces behind Disney's desire for control, his inspiring hope for tomorrow, and his unrelenting nostalgia. Like I mention in the video, this project was inspired by episode ten of David Zwirner's Dialogues podcast featuring Alex Da Corte and Char...

Why NFTs failed to overthrow fine art

Democratizing Creativity: How AI is replacing artists

Will AI replace artists? Artificial intelligence will democratize art. It will free individuals from the burden of having to learn a craft. I didn't do a great job in discussing details or really elaborating on anything...

Why creative people get to be selfish
zhlédnutí 1,3KPřed 4 lety
Selfish has a bad connotation, but everyone could benefit from you considering you first. When understanding why someone would deserve to be more selfish, we tend to think that living only for others assures we become depressed and unfulfilled. This is true. Living for others is an easy way to ignore the responsibility of independent action, but that's not what we are discussing in this video. ...

Wow, that was one of the most historically uninformed videos I've happened to add to my watchlist in months, on par with Adam Something. Samurai were not killed. You could not kill some 10% of population - that is how many there were. There were a few local revolts, such as the one presented in overly romanticized version in The Last Samurai, but that's it. Samurais were stripped off their privileges, that for many were rather burden, as they prohibited the samurai to take productive jobs. Industrial Revolution did not end in 1840. The Frist industrial revolution - large scale adoption of high pressure, Watt steam engine. What happened next is is that Bessemer process of steel production was discovered, and the industrial revolution just kicked the next gear, called the Second Industrial Revolution. As a matter of fact, it is not yet over - we're just living through the Fourth one. Also, by the time of industrial revolution industry was anything else but purely utilitarian - even in the US, which had it own way, completely different from that of Europe. The cultural stream from the West to Japan was not one-sided. Western artists were fascinated by Japanese style, but art was not the only thing that the contact with Japan has influenced. Japanese blend of utilitarian simplistic beauty has inspired - your next point! - the whole cohort of architects who put the path to modern architecture, in particular - yes - Frank Lloyd Write. It was not the only cause, but its influence is undeniable. It is also a complete mistake to attribute the unimaginative nature of the modern architecture to capitalism - a short-sightedness only possible if you are a US leftist who never left the country. Just have a look at soviet architecture, the one I grew in. "Oh, but what about Stalin-era buildings" one would say. Well, apart from being overly pompous, those were buildings for the eilte. Sometimes average people happened to live in it - like my grandma-in-law, who got it because she was a senior footwear technologist and lived on 16m2 (no, I'm not going to convert to FREEDOM units) with her husband and daughter up until the age of 40. Also, the actual quality of brickwork was nothing to aspire to. A solid dislike, which will - against my will, still promote your channel.

We can blame a lack of architectural inspiration in part on the professionalization of the craft. In the 1980's, most states adopted legislation to create architectural licensing boards. This prevented anyone lacking a degree, at a time when the only architectural styles being taught in schools were brutalist/modernist types. Frank Lloyd Wright wasn't a licensed architect, for example. People with a passion have had to undergo relatively sterile training by professors trained in sterility. Historically though, you learned the trade through internship, which allowed for some freedom of choice in your adopted style and much greater flexibility. Here we are...
