Welcome to the wetter bass.
You will find in this channel video reviews of bass pedals and effects. My goal is to share with you, in a didactic and relaxed way, my thoughts and opinions about pedals and effects for electric bass guitars.
I have been playing bass for more than 30 years and have been making basses and guitars professionally for more than 12. Ironically, as a luthier I always though that craving for the cleanest signal was the ultimate quest for any bass player. Until a few years ago...
My assumptions changed completely once I realised that effects help me sound better, feel better and consequently play better! Now I'm completely hooked to pedals and found in CZcams a way to share my enthusiasm with other bass players, wanting to convince them to go "wet".
Hence "the wetter bass".

I just love my pachyderm...
Well we know the on/off switches work
🤨?
The Mastotron is more civilised! True. So many shades of good tone it would be hard to pick a favourite.
Sweet. ❤
Soon as this started I heard a tone I like..
Change to amp sim and actually run a few different models. Something about the tone bothered me with this.
What was it?
@thewetterbass I don't know. I switched to the ampeg video and immediately it sounded good. This just seemed like endless fiddling for subpar sound. It just always sounded cheap
Oh, right. That’s comparing to the Ampeg. Well yes, but one is many times the price of the other. So all I all I think it’s pretty good enough value.
@@thewetterbass I understand that I use cheap pedals exclusively with garbage gear even. But I haven't heard a compressor pedal that amazed me and a pi fuzz is a pi fuzz. That pedal has some good tones but still sounds bad. Would not consider.
👍
I love very very angry fuzz sound and own atleast 30 of them beasts.🤟🏻😁 But I also own 8 basses and almost all of them are ACTIVE...🤷🏻♂️ I think that they sound good with fuzzes but it is just my opinion...🙄 P.S. lovely dogs!🤗 I have 5 month old Pyrenean Mastiff puppy. He is already 42kg!😳😅
42kg!!! Love Mastiff but need a lot of space to keep one. Yeah I was kidding around with that active/passive bass. It’s just that some people say things as if they were absolutely sure about’em. It’s not my case. Active can actually help make saturation pedals sound completely different!
I like it. I'd be trying to get a larger case unit with a clean blend bypass.. with a tilt EQ with a slap to flat setup. Potentially with optical comp. All on the clean blend side. None of these sounded bad at all. I use a pi fuzz with the scoop dialed away and a cs400 off either a split ABY or second pickup stereo bass. Into a KBA50 peavey and when interference isn't a thing I run a "Dumble" pedal on a third channel split with that.. phasing with inverting channels sorted it's able to go huge and I just bypass the fuzz leaving the rest on always. Gave up on bass amps when I got that KBA50 I actually love my germanium fuzz face but it doesn't play nice with others.
Sounds to me like you should use a splitter and try blending the fuzz with comp. 😏
@thewetterbass I do that. "ABY" two or three channels usually. I'd rather have a single pedal instead of a whole board... just for a bypass compression + dirt... year 5 with this setup
Yes, I understood that and think it’s an excellent choice! I do that too, only 2 channels though.
@thewetterbass I usually run two as well. P compression and a double jazz with series Parallel and a TBX tone pot. Stereo Jacks that run mono if that cable goes in.. PITA to need a pedalboard. The gain in either seem to match phase with my comp and fuzz but I've had some that don't.
Too bad your loop didn’t include some open E notes played with varying note durations, that is the true test of a distortion sound for bass guitar, imo of course.
I think with the samples in the video you get a pretty good idea of the sounds each pedal offers 😉
Honestly, I think it sounds amazing. I also think it sounded the best out of the shoot out too, but at about £300 shipped to the uk BEFORE TAX, it’s not for me. If it had, say, a foot-switchable second gain stage that allowed you to switch between low and high gain at the stomp of a foot, then I think I might be more keen on it as it would increase the functionality, almost like giving you two pedals for one. Good luck to them, they made an excellent pedal.
Great ideas!!! I got a spare room here in Spain for you btw… 😂 Theo y sus pedales ❤️
@@thewetterbasshaha I would love to come stay. I’ve never been to Spain.
Same with the kinotone sparks which I would like to try - but it's only available directly from them in the US. $399 before shipping and taxes
Hi, I have an octaver and a sadoswky sbp2 preamp. Where do you recommend I connect them? In the parallel fx or the parallel I assume fx. Thanks
Bass -> Octaver -> Fuzz -> preamp -> amp
@@thewetterbass Sorry I made a mistake! I have a dsm pedal and would like some advice on where to put the octaver and preamp... Fx parallel or preamp parallel?
None of the two. Same signal chain as before. Unless you want to use the fx to blend with the clean signal preamped by the Simplifier, then plug into the parallel loop.
Super juicy ❤
I got me one of the Wine Cellar thinking the XLR output could be used as a DI with phantom power but it doesn't work with phantom power at all. It only sends out the same level as the jack output when plugged to a 9v power source. What's the deal with that?
Hi! The deal is that it’s not a sans amp. It’s a regular xlr DI out without a ground lift. 😉
@@thewetterbass so it's essentially a useless xlr output
@N8oRMusic yep… still ok if there are no ground noise issues. Works passive too.
Honestly I'd almost recommend this to someone who DOESN'T love fuzz, there's alot of tones in there that sit just perfectly in that sweetspot between fuzz and overdrive.
Yes! Exactly, that’s how I like my fuzzes to sound, like beefed up overdrives!
thanks 4 the mention (Davide)
Thanks for the recommendation!!! 🤓
@@thewetterbass you have the - Sub Zero "Artic Fuzz" - to try too (on the muff side of the fuzz, but weird in controls and settings)
@cosebanali I will check it out!
I really like how you break the song in and out to hear it with and without and you keep it short and sweet very well done brother also nice to hear it on different types of bass guitars this might be one of the best pedal demos I've ever heard honestly with everything considered
🙌🏼😊

lol at the “20th Century drum loops” comment. You make me feel so old!
@@TheoAndHisPedals 😂 it goes like “boom-tshi-bam-tshi-boom…”
I use this pedal mainly as an always on clean boost into my main overdrive - the JHS Morning Glory (so good on bass!). But to solve the low end issue I run the BSF after my always on Jive with no diodes on and the gain set at 9:00 and volume at 11:00 (I also use this pedal as a fuzz). I run this entire 3 pedal gain set up through one channel of my Tri Parallel Mixer which gives me great control over blending the low end back in as needed on all 3 or when used individually or any combo of the 3. You could accomplish the same result with an LS-2 as well instead of the TPM.
Awesome. You’re not the only one to speak highly of the morning glory on bass…
Hi, Why did you choose the AMT rather than another clean preamp (like the Darkglass Harmonic booster for example) ?
Because I love the enhanced crispiness of its sound, mainly due to the tube I think. 😉
Thanks for your answer 😉
Great video!
Very nice review. Thank you.
Hello Sir, which neck do you think is slimmer, that or a Fender Jazz Bass?
Hi, to me Jazz Bass necks feel slimmer, especially when in comes to 4 strings. With 5 not as much difference.
I actually think this sounds better than the SGT that you reviewed....if you put a d.i. / cab sim after this like say an element this would probably be killer...to my ears it's better.
I wrote an answer before (that I deleted) thinking you were talking about my latest review of the Matribox and your comment caught me completely off guard! Seeing that you were actually talking about the Skarbassone makes a lot more sense. Yes, add a DI and bass cab and this thing definitely is a killer modern sound saturation device, all-in-one solution for all types of situations, stage or studio.
On the filter pre, I think you've got the q values backwards. Low number = wide and vice versa.
@@neudels4896 probably, will check! 😉
Good for starting out and exploring options.
I think it’s, perhaps, more oriented towards players that have a bit of experience. Mostly because you do need experience and understanding of effects and amp to exploit a multi effect like this one. But yes, cool for experimenting.
Damn you for making me want to some my money on affordable good gear 😅 great demo! My favourite is the low gain clean one
You mean the first one? That tape saturation is pretty neat!
@@thewetterbass fourth one buddy
@robdelabassist ah yes the compressed one. 👍
Quite interesting if you don't have a cheap, good "toy" at home yet and you just want to experiment. This isn't the first time I've heard that the menu navigation is a bit annoying.
There some functions I didn’t even bother looking at in depth…
Hello. Great review. This looks similar to a Line6 helix or a budget Quad Cortex. Good to know about the quality of the audio in
It works just fine. 😉
I considered something like this, but finally got something more compact that's targeted specifically at bass: a Zoom MS-60B+. I love it so far! Has really nice sounds, and the amp sims sound great as well. And it's pretty straight-forward to operate. I would love to hear your opinion on it if you can get your hands on it, maybe even some comparisons with real pedals. There's almost no coverage of the MS-60B+ on CZcams.
Yes, the MS60B+ does seem interesting!
For me, I only have one overdrive which is always on at low gain and that’s my JHS Morning Glory ran through the EHX Tri Parallel Mixer to blend in more low end. Absolutely fantastic sound on bass. I used this on the road touring with the Motown group The Miracles for a spot on Jamerson type tone. But it can also get dirty if I need it.
You’re not the only one recommending the morning glory. I eventually will have to try it out!
Toying with getting this preamp in my sg bass. I currently have the double nfp which is amazing but I have (single) nfp set up in a few other basses and this might be fun for some variety. Anyone here have both and have any thoughts?
I have both! They are two very different beasts. What can I tell you about the nfp that you don’t already know? The only (obvious) thing I can say is that if you like the GK sound this preamp definitely does the trick. And you’ve got passive option just in case. Compared to the nfp, again this is going to sound obvious, think of this as plugging a passive bass directly into a GK head. Also, the contour switch is pretty amazing.
@@thewetterbass I know both are amazing, and the double nfp gives you a lot of tonal capabilities to play with. I may just buy the 800bm and sell (or find another bass) for the preamp i don't use. Your videos have been very informative so thanks for that and i also like the idea of buying local (also london based).
@amirsmith93 😊
As crazy as thus may sound but I dig the behringer
The only truly crazy thing is the price of this pedal! 😉
Boa camiseta!
😂😎
The throaty setting really cuts through. I love watching these type of videos. I like how you show it in a full song context and then solo your output so you clearly hear what the effect pedal will sound like.
👍
Hello.
It’s pretty tasty. Clearly owes a lot to the b3k but I wonder if it sounds any different. This sounded a bit thicker than I usually hear from a b3k, not sure though.
the hrom uses the same CD4049UBE CMOS chip has the DG pedals, so its got the same DNA baked in, and has a similar throatiness. The hrom has a bit more grunt/ooomph than DGs stuff and this is where it sound different to me.
Yes it’s a different take on the b3k, you can almost get vintage vibes out of it. So I’d say it somewhat more versatile but has that typical cmos OD sound from DG.
@frankmarini5391 also I think it sounds best a mid gain, where this pedal really shines.
one of my fave pedals for that close but not exactly DG tone. The Mid-gain throaty tone is where it's at, and the grunt switch makes it thick. Thanks Jean for turning me onto this pedal.
Agree with you 100%
