He's coming home, He's coming home, He's coming, Cristiano has come home!!!! Viva viva viva!! When Cristiano left, my son was 11. When he was born, in 1998, and with my in laws being ardent Leeds fans, my brothers scouse wannabes I had to ensure that when he exercised the free will I afforded him to choose his own team to follow that Darren Zachary Trafford would choose well. As he approached primary school age, and with the latest craze sweeping our outer East Belfast housing estate, along with a lot of other Northern Irish heartlands, being to choose Chelsea and the Oligarch, little Zac, as he was known, somehow managed to choose a little known team that played in an area of the North West of England that situated the shopping centre that his mother had chosen to name him after, Trafford Centre I think it was, and it just happened that I also had followed that team, as my father had before me, and his Govan born, shipyard working Father had before him. When we won the champions league in 2008, Zac was 10 and more or less had known only glory years with our little team. We watched the final in my Father's house and little Zac had a bottle of shandy bass. As the shootout was ebbing away from us, he started to sob uncontrollably, his favourite player, in his favourite team had missed a penalty, and that player just didn't miss penalties. As we were all big men we didn't want to embarrass the young upstart that was my son, so my father took ourselves into the kitchen to watch the shootout peeter out, as we were about to lose another one, to enable us to sob uncontrollably and save the boy from further shame. From this vantage point we witnessed Big JT try to copy Eddie the Eagle and thus turned the shootout our way. After the game, Zacs mother came over to remove Zac from the ensuing alcohol infused lullabies all beginning with Viva. On his way out of the door he said something along the lines of, or this was what I think he said "thanks Dad for allowing me to choose my own football team, I chose well, they have my best player and I have watched Trebles, Doubles, Titles and Cups, but thank you Mum most of all for calling me after your favourite shopping centre!!! Words to that effect anyway. The following year as his favourite player waved goodbye to his adoring public I'm sure I heard Zac mutter through the sobs, rucking punt Dad but the rest was drowned out with me mouthing something similar to my own dad as he smashed my grandfathers picture off the wall, shouting about the punt, it being the old unit of currency used in the Irish Republic. We think the rucking aspect derives from terminology. rugby. Anyway, after finding the longest route possible to get to the punchline, little Zac is a bit bigger now, and towards the end of last year was faced with the same dilemma I had had all those years before, trying to decide whether to afford his son the right to choose his team for himself or whether to choose it for him and support the same team as us, and with the re-emergence of the scousers, it would likely lead to coming home from primary school on Monday afternoon with stories of how falling off his skateboard had honestly caused the grazes to his knuckles and the hair of the scouse supporters to just fall out. But not so little Zac chose to do the honerable thing and has afforded Isaac Ezra Trafford the right to also self determine when the time comes. The birth of Little Isaac was right up there with the birth of Little Zac as the most amazing times in my life, with the first title after 26, the double, the double again, King Eric in his many dazzling performances, including the stars in their eyes at Selhurst, Roy the Boy v everyone but most notably Juventus, Viera and the whole Arse how Wenger teams and oh so many more, Rio and John O v the Scousers last minute shows, Ole the scouse wrecking ball, and wrecking the German military machine one night in Barcelona before Istanbul was a dot on the map but what other United supporting father and grandfather who witnessed all these events, as the Impossible Dream was realised, can't say that knowing Cristiano had signed to come home out trumped most bit not all of those events. I know there'll be one or two who will think Cristiano walking out of the tunnel topped them all put together. If so how could this be topped, oh maybe 70 or 80 thousand piping their hero onto the pitch, how could that be topped, possibly a second debut goal, probably the last one was all some of the younger fans could hope for, but us 50 somethings had seen this old stager before, we knew of the immense pleasure and pride he took from pulling on that shirt, the honour he felt as this titan of world football felt so weighed down by it that after the game he admitted of feeling nervous. This second coming truly felt like a bigger event than what the actual second coming will be. Personally, I think this is the only second coming in town. I have heard some United fans talk about burnout, squad not big enough etc and we'll be close but not get over the line. First stroke of genius by Ole, Edison himself, or whoever convinced Edison that Cristiano should wear the 7, next in the firing line should be Harry Maguire. If having the 7 installs that magnitude of increased intensity to his game, imagine what natch day armband would do, or club captain. That boy will play past 40, play at least another 150 games and score another 100 goals and with him as captain and using leading by example we will win titles. The dross of the post Sir Alex era prior to Ole has been replaced by the excitement that we might have to score 3 or 4 to win most games and Cristiano will have to score the first two and likely the last one and now to the end of this stage of my waffling, mental health is a bitch, and what will pull our waffle together. The little boys will be going to see Cristiano when I get my ill health retirement settlement. I wasn't able to afford to take little zac first time around but we three Kings from the East of Belfast will be there for the second coming and all will witness his glory. PS this was, written during a manic high, and whilst there's very likely a very witty tongue in cheek story there it might require some deciphering. Lol GGMU
