M. Loer - For Every Head, a Hell (full visual album)
A new (short) album of my latest experimental/noise/ambient/something efforts! Primarily made with my mixing board wired up in a so-called "no-input" setup, more accurately called a "self-input" setup, for feedback loops. Lots of looping, processing, overdubbing, and some synths later, and here you have it.
Video footage is largely taken by me. The imagery around the 10 minute mark is heavily mangled and edited footage from the amazing Teamlab Borderless installation in Tokyo, which is stunning.

intrusive thoughts - NIMB performance
zhlédnutí 205Před 3 měsíci
Some obnoxious noise to marinade in your intrusive thoughts to. Using my Mackie mixer set up in a NIMB configuration, including one feedback loop with some pedals. Running into my DAW where some post-processing nonsense is happening, including a pitch plugin with an LFO, creating the drunken vibrato effect. #harshnoise #noise #NIMB #experimentalmusic

My first ever live show! Deep appreciation to Audrey (aka Mother Behemoth, reelC1NBe3QLZsa/ ) for inviting me out and for the other delightful noise weirdos who performed and gave me such a warm welcome (Legitimate Threat; Aporrheta). ultimate minimalist/affordable ambient rig? super-simple MIDI controller on breadboard
zhlédnutí 399Před 5 měsíci
I think this is probably the cheapest and most minimalist ambient or noise rig possible: turning an Arduino Uno and breadboard (a kit I got used from somebody for maybe $20) into a super-simple MIDI controller that sends CC messages to my DAW. Forward and backwards pushbottons cycle through which CC message is selected. Arduino code available if anybody wants it, but I just asked ChatGPT to wri...
1-hour noise/ambient performance - M. Loer - Natterjack

One hour of obnoxious noises for deep sleep and relaxation, to torment your neighbors with, or whatever else you want. Performed on a number of my own DIY devices/instruments/abominations. The big one is a circuit-bent guitar pedal (PCB clone of the EQD Life pedal and DOD Carcosa wired up with an optional feedback loop for horrible self-oscillation), which provides the source noise, along with ...
new device - ambient soundscapes in a tiny footprint (MIDI controller + piezo)

Prototyping a new device! This is a small enclosure with a lot of stuff packed inside, namely a very cramped Arduino Uno which is reading the 6 knobs and 12 push buttons and outputting midi signals to my DAW. Then there's a (totally unshielded, which I realized in hindsight was a giant mistake) piezo pickup hot glued inside, feeding to the 1/4" jack, feeding audio to my DAW. A super compact pac...

If you want to get something similar, you could get one of the big-box Big Muff Pi pedals, learn a bit about soldering and circuit bending, and make a stupid circuit-bent noise box yourself! Anyway, thanks for watching!

      Online pedal building supply company called LoveMySwitches. These knobs fit ok but not perfectly-you need to use a little screwdriver to tighten the grub screw, but sometimes they still get loose and pop off. I wish there were a better fitting option but this is the best I’ve found so far

    • @MLoerAudio
      @MLoerAudio Před 2 měsíci

      Hmm, no MIDI stuff in this one, I think. Often in my videos you’ll see me using a MIDI mixer to control VSTs on my computer. In this case there are some plugins doing post processing, but all the sounds are coming from the mixer wired up into feedback loops, including some pedals. It’s called the no-input mixing technique. • @MLoerAudio
      @MLoerAudio Před 3 měsíci

      That's right! All you need would be some kind of noise making device (cheap piezo pickups or mic or whatever), a way to get the sound into your computer (look for used audio interfaces), a laptop, and then you can get the free trial of Reaper, which includes tons of free native audio plugins (including various distortions, reverb, delay, pitch, ring mod, tremolo, along with a bunch of other random stuff). The black mixer I have is just a MIDI device--each knob is mapped onto the wet/dry blend of different audio plugins running in Reaper. You don't even need the mixer--you could do that all with just the laptop, it will just be a bit slower. Enjoy!

    • @MLoerAudio
      @MLoerAudio Před 4 měsíci

      Thank you very much! For me it’s more about variety and experimentation than any one plugin. So first check out all stock distortion/saturation plugins in your DAW. Then play with combinations: stack two distortions, run reverb into distortion, or distortion into a ring mod into convolution into another distortion. I love convolution reverb for weird textures. Then do that but also add an LFO on a few parameters and suddenly the whole mess is constantly mutating and warping. A nice free distortion is Unplugred’s Prisma. Kind of a random one too but I love and constantly use Audiority’s Harmonic Maximizer (not free but cheap), a multi band saturation, which helps sculpt sounds. I also love their Boss HM-2 plugin, also cheap, for disgusting distortion. I hope this helps!

      Thanks so much! I felt good about it! It was definitely hectic to get my rig packed up and transported somewhere. Was waiting for something to break or stop working basically the whole time. There were some hiccups for sure, like I wasn’t happy with the signal chain for the piezo pickup in the adding machine, so it wasn’t as audible as I wanted it to be. From here I want to figure out how to make my rig more compact and portable. But overall very happy for a first gig! Thanks so much for watching!
