The World by Wild Frontiers Podcast - Episode 8: Travelling to Challenging Destinations
Join long-time friend of Wild Frontiers, Kate Humble, as she speaks to Jonny Bealby (Founder) and Marc Leaderman (Product and Operations Director) to unpick the complexities of travelling to the countries that raise an eyebrow, prompt questions, and even tales of caution from friends and family. From Iran to the Congo, this podcast explores the essential questions any thoughtful traveller considers, such as 'Can I go there?' 'Should I go there?' 'Is it safe?' and 'Is it ethical?' Plus, some inspiring travel tales, and a peek into how Wild Frontiers' shaped their philosophy on how to approach the nuances of what makes a destination 'good' or 'bad'.

I have searched for camel caravans that don't just offer a kind of "sit on a camel-experience", but actually do a desert crossing and lets you tag along, just like this seems to be. How did you come across this opportunity? Was it a travel agency? Or do you have to have contacts? Eager to know, since crossing a desert on a camel is kind of a bucket list item for me. Thx in advance :)

Oh, the Barbarossa Brothers, were Ottomans from Albania and not Turks. Algeria's population is 45 millions and not 63. Other than that, this is a brilliant summary of what travelling across Algeria is about, well documented, brilliantly presented, no pretence, no patronizing comments, (due certainly to the intelligence and sensibility of the presenters.) Fantastic, thanks chaps.

Just a couple of corrections there, if I may; "...the Berber people who make up 25 % of the Algerian population..." , that is not quite correct, 25 % is the proportion of the Algerian population which is entirely Berber speaking, however, ethnically, or genetically the Algerian population is between 70 and 90 Berber, depending on the regions, the Arab genetic component is a lot smaller than initially thought, up until the world genome studies started to get full attention from historians at the turn of the millennium, archaeologists, anthropologists, and linguists all agree on that now. Apart from 2 most aggressive Arab tribes deported, understandably from the Arabic peninsula between the 9the and 11th centuries ; the Banu Hilal and Banu Maquil, who settled down along the Saharan Atlas on the Steppe region between the Med and the Sahara (a strip of about 500 km stretching from Morocco to Tunisia (+/- 2000 km, over +/- 500kms north/South) that separates the Sahara from the Mediterranean strip which itself is s about (+/- 80-200kms North/South), the rest of the population and all successive dynasties that ruled over the Maghreb, or at least Algeria has always been Berber.

Generally speaking. If I can't split any journey to take in an overnight stopover en route, I'll fly. You take the train to see, so I can't see the point in seeing nothing.!!! To me it's not logic. But much worse than all that - very few people sleep anywhere near properly while travelling, so guess what? - the next day you're heavy with sleep and it's a wash out.!! So if, as you indicate, anyone needs to travel overnight in an Indian train, my strong advice is to arrange to do nothing the next day, except for resting and having a decent meal in your new destination.

We went to Iran with Wild Frontiers and far from experiencing the food, our guide was so lazy that we ate kebabs for most of the trip. When I wrote to Wild Frontiers to complain, they did not even have the grace to reply! Iran, however was stunningly beautiful and the people are amazing. "Please tell people in your country, that we are NOT our government" was a repeated request

Apologies if you missed it, please contact us if you would like us to resend it. Since then we have taken your feedback on board and our travellers have been enjoying the food of Iran. Best wishes, Wild Frontiers.
