Football Friday: Analyzing the Maryland Game
Last weekâs performance against Maryland was tough to watch. UConn needs to wash off the stench of that game and move forward. We brought in Pete and Bobby from the TNT College Football Podcast to discuss what went wrong and how to improve.
Peteâs Take
Pete emphasized the importance of reviewing the game film meticulously. The team needs to analyze every detail to understand what went wrong and how to correct it. He mentioned that Coach Moraâs analysis was spot on, particularly regarding tackling and the differences between scout team performance and actual game situations.
Bobbyâs Perspective
Bobby agreed with Pete, stressing the need for accountability and improvement. He shared his own coaching experience, highlighting the importance of addressing mistakes head-on and making necessary adjustments.
Looking Ahead: Merrimack Game
As UConn prepares to face Merrimack, the focus should be on both offensive and defensive improvements. The team needs to dominate from the start and not let Merrimack gain any confidence.
Offensive Strategy
Pete suggested that UConn should leverage its wide receivers more effectively. Skyler Bell and TJ Sheffield have shown they can make plays, and the team needs to get the ball in their hands more often. The offensive line should also create bigger holes for the running game.
Defensive Focus
Bobby pointed out that the linebacker unit needs to step up. The tackling was poor against Maryland, and this needs to be corrected. Players like Tui Fumina Brown need to lead by example and improve their performance.
Predictions and Expectations
Both Pete and Bobby believe that UConn should win against Merrimack, but the margin of victory will be telling. Pete predicted a 26-16 win, emphasizing the need for the offense to show more explosiveness. Bobby predicted a 28-10 win, expecting the team to take care of business but acknowledging that there might be some early struggles.

Start passing the ball! Anyway you can move the chains⊠move em!
I hope they donât lose Welliver âŠ! I would get him in the mix too!!
The real key is they need Division I players. I do not doubt they care and work hard, etc. Itâs just theyâre not at that level. Reminds me of the old NFL Films story of when Chuck Noll took over the hapless Stealers. He said something to the tune of âI watched the film last year and you all played hard and gave it your all each and every week. The problem is youâre not very good football players and most of you will not be on this team much longer.â Thatâs UConn in a nutshell. Theyâre a Division II to an FCS team trying to play Division I. I feel bad for the guys. They donât deserve that.
They have D1 players, blocking and tackling with technique is more about desire than talent, there's no excuses for that. 100 pct need more talent but the fixes that need to be made are the ones you look yourself in the mirror and ask, do i want to play hard and why am i out here? If you're not all in, you won't give your body up
We have some really solid division 1 level players though
This team needs to disconnect themselves from the (almost) decade-long loser mentality.....
Misspoke a bit about Darius Adams in the episode. He will visit UConn Oct. 4-6, not September. UConn is slated to get his second to last official.
Your guest is delusional... While DUKE could downgrade football if not coattailed, but there is no feasible path that ends with UNC in the BIGEAST. Both the SEC and B1G have pending invites offered for when/if, and if UNC doesn't accept, no one but FSU leaves. BC did not have the power nor influence to block UCONN. How UCONN acted during the BIGEAST's collapse is the main reason.
Revisionist history itâs literally been on the record for years the BC was the main bad actor. U can disagree with opinions anytime you want. But that is a fact. And honestly idc, but not going to let you mix opinions and conjecture with not knowing the difference of what happened
@@LockedOnUConn There's a great self-critical thread on UCONN's own message board. Consider that UNC, CLEMSON and FSU couldn't prevent adding CAL+2, but you think BC alone had the power or influence to block? I'll accept that BC was hostile and voiced its concerns, but the objections have been broad. FSU and CLEMSON threatened to leave if UCONN replaced MARYLAND. Again, BC did not have the power nor influence to block UCONN. How UCONN acted during the BIGEAST's collapse is the main reason.
There is no feasible path that ends with UNC in the BIGEAST. If UNC doesn't leave the ACC for the SEC or B1G, only FSU leaves. UNC is also not in a suicide pact with DUKE, which is a coattail effort.
I hope these observations prove more valid than the nonsense peddled about UConn joining the Big 12.
Nonsense? lol.
@@LockedOnUConn You had many of us believing that UC to the Big 12 was virtually a done deal. It was never close to that. ButâŠ.your sources overstated the situation, and we all make mistakes.
@@mrmojorisin8752 Well i appreciate you realizing this was a mistake not a nefarious plot
Iâm as confident as ever. Nothings really changed except a few peoples anxiety levels.
Thomas is playing the field and hoping for the money bag. Hope he recognizes that UConn will provide solid nil but higher long term returns. We don't want guys who simply wish to maximize their short term money đ°
I have no doubt Meleek Thomas will be a Husky.
The 3 players mentioned here at the beginning
Who do you guys want to see sign with UConn?
Did this ever happen? Iâm pretty sure I signed up for this and havenât received any content or communication. But I also canât find any billing information in my email or text. But Iâm certain that I signed up
Whatâs up, man? Hey it didnât happen because Iâll be honest. Only two people signed up and I love you man, but Iâm not gonna do an insider program unless we get at least 10 folks.
@@LockedOnUConn makes sense. You should try again, in season. Iâm betting youâll get a lot more traction in season.

As soon as Uconn goes to the Big 12
Playing time and NIL are the potential blocks. With Maleek, it's almost obvious it's just the size of NIL he covets, not playing time, which is automatically bequeathable to him. Can't blame him on that NIL issue. He probably feels winning a title is not that supremely important or that he feels he is skilled enough as a one-and -done to the NBA without further clinical refining under Hurley and can be a high lottery pick based on his own merits. Just look at Reed from Kentucky. I feel he is waiting for an NIL cash offer from Alabama and Arkansas, both of whom are NIL rich. After the Arkansas visit, he can weigh his options, and perhaps reconsider Uconn. Maybe. The problem with that is that other guards Hurley offered would commit to Uconn ahead of him, which isnât a necessisarily bad thing.
Sounds like we getting none of these players. I'm still confused why players don't commit to Uconn
The answer is UCONN and Dan Hurley and their coaching staff is well positioned to recruit effectively. Here is the the truth. If a recruit is only interested in maximizing NIL money. Then good luck! UCONN doesnât run a daycare.
What I am saying, athletes that have been used to entitlement and a privileged approach may not have the team oriented focus and toughness to be successful at UCONN.
I have seen more than one McDonalds All American get run out of town by Jim Calhoun.
@@dantefazzina9037 That's wholesome but if you're not spending you're not getting the best players. Maybe Uconn NIL is lacking?
What a empty answer, horrible
đ
I think Uconn needs to stick to basketball also their men's hockey team is doing good. They had a up and down season last season but they finished strong. They were one goal away of beating bc and advancing to the td garden for the semifinals. This year they have a new assistant coach that's from Northern michigan. They have two returning sophomores that are drafted and 6 freshmen 4 that were given nhl non drafted invites to development camps. And the two freshman that were not given invites they will be good. One is a foward that killed it in jrs and a defenseman that was part of the us development program. They were both to old to be drafted. And also the baseball team is better than the football team. Like what kid from the south will come to uconn to play football!
@BuffaloPros They haven't yet they have made strides at least they have beaten ranked opponents ever since they joined hockey east. Eventually they will get there maybe this year. They have a more experienced assistant coach that was at northern michigan and was a associate head coach for one thevtop jr teams .And look I didn't know there was kids from the south that have played for uconn football. But they were probably kids that would play third string on a powerhouse team. The football team needs to get the top players not the lower tier players!
@BuffaloPros yhea he's horrible maybe the new assistant will help that has more experience. I think it was mistake bringing in mike peirra he's nothing like his brother. Joe perria new what he was doing behind the bench. I think they hired the new assistant coach to help save his job!
tornado lol !
â€â€â€â€â€Huskies 3 peat for bball school..another 1st game loss that didn't hurt football like Sen Murphy stated not our fave sport...Bleed Blueđ đ đ đ đ
Skyler Bell was pretty much the only highlight of the game.
Once our fans understand we'll never be the big or sec in football the more they'll understand what bret is doing our best sport is basketball and for most fans that is a hard pill to swallow
I was at this game and it was a long one!. Uconn could not execute well with passing overall. #1 proved he can catch and get to the ball. The play calling wasn't good as well. They also ran the UConn QB too much and he got hurt. The Defense ran this bend don't break style, per Coach Mora and that never wins games. If they want to compete in the Big 12, the entire coaching staff needs to be upgraded and the NIL money needs to exceed 12m vs. 3.5m
I think one step at a time, even if an invite is extended, the football program has to field competitive football and then we can amp up NIL, and other investements.
@@LockedOnUConn i was expecting to see that one step at a time progress Saturday and coach Mora talked it up. Maryland 50, Uconn 7 said it all.
Did I expect them to win? Hell no. They werenât even remotely competitiveâŠ
NO but we should expect them to be competitive.. That's what I had the most issue with.
@@LockedOnUConn absolutely and to me thatâs on Mora. It wasnât Michigan it was Maryland, a mediocre at best power 4 nobody.
@@DonDizzz They are better than mediocre, but the sentiment is still there, and i agreew with most of your point.
@@LockedOnUConn fair enough but itâs yet to be seen how good they (Maryland)are. We will find out. Imo they will be a bottom BIG 10 team in 2024. They are 14-27 in the big 10 since joining in 2019. A conference bottom feeder
First couple weeks, the tackling is going to be bad all over the country. But UConn took it to a new level. If Evers doesnât look DOMINANT vs Merrimack itâs gotta be on to the next. Cannot waste reps on a stiff. Get a look at the freshman Welliver.
@@DonDizzz absolutely!! Put in Welliver! Weâve seen Evers and Fagnano⊠both ineffective! Put in the guy with the arm that the players love to play for! He can throw and run! Must give him a go!! This isnât working!
@@ManWytch I donât want Roberson flashbacks of last season. Evers gets 1 more shot if heâs not in command itâs time to move on. Maryland played 3 QBs. We are UConn with NOTHING to lose. Why wonât they take a look at EVERYBODY????
Iâm fine with UConn coming to the Big12, need more east coast teams.
What does UConn and FSU share in Common Panic ! Cmon guys 1 to 2 games does not make a season Give credit to the teams that won They also only played a couple of games It's a long season Have some faith in the players and the coaches to adjust An enjoy the games because that is what it's about not the Greed or the Rankings or the media hype. It will work itself out Do you think FSU is going to lose the rest of the season
I think Maryland is really solid team with some good skill players, Do you think it's panic or just us watching and saying wow this team looked woefully unprepared for this game? That's how i saw it, if i came across as panic, no intended
Maybe scheduling their toughest opponent of the season for the first game wasn't such a good idea.
Extremely disappointing, the players need to stop reading the press clippings and WORK on the game plan that Mora has foreâm .!!
Moras in trouble if they lose to FCS Merrimack or have a poor showing! They looked awful! So tired of this when even FCS schools competed last Saturday! Moras basically berated fans @ NIL $$ and raised a bunch⊠it seems that have made things worse! Who wants to buy tix for this đ©??
Leaving the big east for meathead football

It's sad but I don't think uconn football is gonna happen
Discipline play calling style of play you name it just throw Uconn football away
Quick! Schedule ECSU and WCSU!
any chance this lone result might hurt our chances with the Big 12
Doesnât help public perception
Is dropping football an option? fan base just doesnât seem to care.
UConn just have to simply prep for Merrimack, it was expected for the loss but they will improve! The saga continues!
@@faf8609 like hell! This team is definitely going to lose against Merrimack who at least made an effort against Air Force Saturday! This is a racket! These players and coaches are here for a degree and a job paycheck thatâs all! They donât care about the fans and donât care to even pretend to try! That game Saturday was a totally unprepared team! Fire the coaches and end NIL payout! Athletic Dept clearly doesnât care enough to hire the best to turn this around! After 15 long yrs - This fan is done
They need to move to division 2. As a fan is it better to have a division 1 team that gets embarrassed every week, or have a team in division 2 where they can be competitive and win more games?
@@itsjustacomment454 they play Merrimack next week which is FCS (Dividion 2 is actually the 3rd tier of ncaa fb) and theyâre not as competitive as some of those that played last week against FBS teams. Iâve been a fan since 80âs but they need to hire distinguished coaches w proven track record or end the program in its entirety! If they move to FCS /CAA (Coastal Athletic League now) they would play New Hampshire, Maine, RI, Albany, Vilinova⊠they not good enough for this either! All this money going to ineffectual coaching. Itâs a racket! End it all.
@@ManWytch I don't think most fans would be disappointed with that. Not every school is meant to have a successful football program. I guess the big question is what would UConn potentially lose by not having a football program?
UConn has truly taken every advantage of their FB fans! Asking for NIL funds stating this is the reason. Fans donate over a million $$ and thus is what we get??? Complete đ©!! Iâm pissed off! Thankful I didnât buy a single season ticket this year! They obviously donât care for or want fans in seats as nobody going to pay to watch this complete đ© show! All that wasted money going to ineffectual coaches and lack luster players! Iâm a fan since Yankee Conference⊠but if this is all we can do (and after 15 yrs it hasnât remotely improved) ELIMINATE THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM ENTIRELY!! And Mens BB fans will just have to enjoy Tier 2 level mens basketball in Big East sitting outside a P4 conference looking in! If I were AD I would wait until after next weeks loss against Merrimack(we all know itâs coming) and fire the coaches and end the NIL payout to these players out of safety for students⊠as they are so ill prepared theyâre going to get injured! Iâm convinced now after a decade and a half that This is all a complete money racket ⊠thatâs all! Fleecing remaining loyal fans & University.
Wow...$1m. Big12 teams are paying players 2x...3x that for BASKETBALL. Without football uconn bb is doomed. Hurley is gone next contract.
Why is this format only seem to be a place for the nastiest and meanest un-fans to vent their meaningless life; bitch, whine, complainl, get nasty somewhere else. If you don't like it, don't want to support it, just go away!
You can see the difference between a solid team and a shamble. Feel bad for the boys. Hopefully, they haven't lost their confidence. We need to strengthen the defense, or we'll never beat a good program! Defense, especially the linebackers and secondary, is very slow! Come on D!!
