Almost zero budget 454 with donated mufflers
Running my almost zero budget 454 LS-7 clone. A friend donated a pair of Thrush turbo mufflers (remember when GM equipped the turbocharged Corvair with these huge mufflers?). Believe it or not, these mufflers are still available and they're not that expensive.

BBC Chevy 454 LS-7 clone running with mufflers

The weather was nice yesterday so I decide to run the almost-zero-budget Chevy big block 454 with a set of donated Thrush turbo mufflers. It was nice to see and hear it run as it’s been sitting in a corner of the garage gathering dust. This is a reproduction of a 1970 465-hp 454 LS-7. Almost everything for this project has been donated with the exception of the standard bore pistons the intake ...

This is another short video of my almost zero budget 454, a reproduction of a 1970 Chevrolet LS-7. We had a couple of nice days and I was anxious to see how the AZB 454 sounded with a pair of donated old Thrush turbo mufflers.
454 first run with a cooling system

I hooked up a temporary cooling system to the 454. A friend donated a 1963 Corvette radiator to the project and I bought the clear reinforced hoses. I was able to run it for around twenty minutes, at which time the coolant temp was 170 degrees. I set the initial timing at 18 degrees and adjusted the idle mixture and idle speed. It'll idle at 800 but I like to have it around 1000 rpm.

My Chevrolet 454 running display engine project. This was the first run. All internals are used except for the pistons and intake, which are new. The block is a four-bolt-main standard 4.250" bore. The cam is a used Crane roller with used Lunati roller lifters. Used Crane Gold roller rockers and Howard's pushrods are at the top, with used Comp Cams springs and 10-degree retainers keeping the va...

Sounds good! You can't do that with todays overly computerized motors sadly. Glad I kept my desmogged 80s cars.

Thanks. I agree, the computerized engines have a different sound. There's no doubt they make great power though. This project has been fun.

I keep forgetting you can do an intake and carb on an LS! I never worked on LS engines so I'm not familiar with the mods. A friend had an LS powered Jeep that he took to the Silver Lake dunes and he ran a carb on that with a pro Carter setup. Wayyyy by over my abilities.

actually. fun fact the vortec 5.7l basically uses the same pcm/control systems as the ls motors. you can run a cam in either and tune them too the moon. while still having turn key driveability. its like taking a blast from the past and modernizing it. though i dont care for the ls motors just a reference. i personally dd a vortec 350 with fuel injection and have fantastic power and driveability cruise control everything. but she has a nasty secret when you open the throttle.

@chehystpewpur4754 it would be best to outfit the small block vortec with port injection manifold and use same ls injectors . Put a reluctor wheel on front of the crank for crank sensor and run Ls Coil on plug set up then just use a ls Ecm and tune away

Thanks for watching! This project will probably never go into a car. I'd need to pull it apart to have the main bearing bores machined before I'd trust it to stay together. It was always intended to be a running display engine, built with a zero budget and lots of donated parts.

Thanks for watching! You're right, no break-in run except the runs on the stand with a cooling system attached. It was built to be a running display engine with an almost zero budget. So far, so good. Right now I'm working on a set of rectangular port heads for it. When they're done, I'll swap out the heads on the engine for the rectangle port heads. Health issues have slowed this project down to a crawl but hopefully I'll get the heads on in a couple of weeks.

Sorry for the delayed reply. This is just a running display engine and it was never intended to be used in a car. Just a project using mostly used donated parts except for pistons (new standard bore), the intake manifold, gaskets and engine oil/filter. Even the main/rod bearings were used but they showed no wear. I'm pretty happy with the project. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! This engine was always intended to be a running display. It's an ongoing project, with almost all parts being donated. It a reproduction of a 1970 465-horse 454 but with some changes due to the parts that were donated. For example, this engine has roller rocker arms instead of the stock pressed rockers. Again, thanks for watching!

    • @crazyhorse782000
      @crazyhorse782000 Před rokem

Thanks for the question and I'm sorry for the long delay in replying. This engine has a hydraulic roller camshaft. The cam was originally in a Mercury Marine 700SC engine. It's actually a pretty nice cam for this engine, and it'll idle comfortably at 800 rpms. If I remember right it's 254/262 duration @ .050 lift with .598/.610 lift and a 114 degree lobe separation angle. Again, sorry for the delay in replying to your question.

Thanks for mentioning this. It's certainly not something I would do on an engine that was anyone else's. In hindsight, it wouldn't have been difficult to plumb the engine to a garden hose and have water running through the engine. But in my defense, I was pretty anxious to run it because we were supposed to get slammed the next day by a winter storm, which would have delayed the engine's first run by a week. Thanks for the reply!
