The 13th Chord - What is it? How do I use it?
zhlédnutí 876Před 4 měsíci
Explanation of the 13th chord. First, we learn its structure, and then we see some examples in Chopin, Gershwin and Debussy. Finally, we'll create voicings to use with standard tunes by incorporating triadic structures that include upper structure chord tones. 9:10 - Wouldn’t the standard reading of the chord in mm. 99 be a B Major dominant chord with an 11th and 13th that both resolve downwards in the next measure? Obviously, it spells out an E minor chord that anticipates the return to the global tonic key, but it wouldn’t make sense that the key of E returns before the structural downbeat of mm. 101. Note there’s a similar ambiguity in the preceding two measures as to whether we’re looking at two chords- C Major and A minor- or one chord- a C major chord with a passing tone as the G ascends to B.

    • @bkehlenb
      @bkehlenb Před 24 dny

      Thanks for your insightful comment. The chord in m. 99 is typically called a cadential 64 chord. This works along with the clear V chord in m. 100 in a dominant function, the upper notes of the V chord being delayed until m. 100. The two notes you describe that resolve down are called 6 4 here rather than 13 11.Most pedagogical theory textbooks I've encountered label the cadential 64 as i64 (Piston, Kostka/Payne, Harder/Steinke, etc.), and some label it as V64 as a nod to its dominant function (Aldwell/Schachter). Beginning an overlapping analysis in the key of e minor in m. 98 is helpful in explaining the pivot chord, although I would agree that we don't actually hear the pivot chord in the new key except, perhaps as an afterthought. I would argue, however, that the dominant in the new key, with its introduction of the strong dominant pitch (m. 99) and the leading tone by m. 100 is a strong announcement pointing our ears back to e minor.

    Thank you, this was incredibly helpful! I have been writing a series of cantatas for the jewish holidays in the style of bach, and I plan to play the organ continuo part when this piece is performed, but while I had simple grasp of figured bass and lots of music theory training (I have also been playing keyboard for 9 years) I didn’t exactly have the most flushed out understanding. This video taught me a lot! But, I do have one question: I have seen a little tail sort of figure attached to other figures like a four. This can be seen in the third measure of the double violin concerto by Bach. I can sort of infer its meaning, but it seems to have a similar function to the figures that are crossed out. What does that mean? Thanks!

      Thanks for your comment! I'm glad you found the video to be helpful. I looked up your example, and the sign seems to be a variation on the slash through the number - the note at the designated interval is to be raised 1/2 step. There are variations on how this is notated. It can also be notated with a little "+" sign next to the number. I hunted around and found a good chart of some of these symbols and variations: robertkelleyphd.com/home/figured-bass/

    The f minor I think can be looked at as a special case of borrowed chords because it functions like the shadow of a dominant chord. Instead of a leading tone resolving upward you have the A flat and F wanting to resolve downward a half step to resolve on the tonic triad with the tonic note itself already in place and waiting for its two brothers to settle in.

    The Roman numeral thing should be simplified by saying the 505.2 chord. Chord five of three is the sixth, chord etc.

    Thank you Brian for the most informative instruction on Basic Introduction to Figured Bass. I've yet to see it elucidated in such a fine way. I am a senior (age-wise), retired from business, intermediate pianist, composer, and would like to see more videos like this, and I am especially interested in music theory and composition instruction. I need assignments, too. Is there any advice and/or references you might have?

      Joseph, thanks so much for your comment. I'm glad that you found this video useful. If you'd like to see more theory videos that I have on CZcams, you can check out my channel (www.youtube.com/@bkehlenb). On that page, there are several playlists, and the one that this video is taken from is called "Music Theory: Diatonic Harmonization." Also, in the description to video you watched, there are several links to books available on Amazon. I am thinking that the book that would most interest you (it has lots of assignments and exercises) would be Mastery of Music Theory, Book 2: Diatonic Harmonization. Hi Mr. Kehlenbach hope you well, I have a doubt in the exercise of this chapter, doing the harmonization exercise I'm seeing a pattern of 8ve parallels with I6/4 going to the V and I´m following the harmonization rules that you explained, I'm keeping the bass note from chord to chord, retain the common tone in the upper voices and the remain voices resolving stepwise down, but I'm still seeing the pattern of the parallel 8ve sometimes in the Alto and Bass voices and sometimes in the Soprano and Bass, for the sake of a good harmonization I have to avoid this? or this 8ve parallel patterns are inevitable?

      Alberto, I am guessing that you are referring to the octaves you are seeing in the I6/4 (on the pitch G in the key of C) and then to the V (on the pitch G again). Remember that parallel 8ves and 5ths refer only to motion; that is, voices that are moving to different pitches. In this case, the octave (G to G in the key of C) is not moving - it is stationary - and we label it as "no motion." Therefore, it is not parallel 8ves. Let me know if I addressed the concern you have.
