This is played up for comedy of course, but at least sometimes if not usually, the sponge was washed in a running channel of water like we would grab new pieces of tiolet paper, and then taken by servants for a deeper cleaning and sterilization between uses. The toilets were openly connected to the sewage line tho, which got its water from sources like spent bath water nearby (kinda like our toilets). And Romans were still cleaner than anyone after them up until we invented closed sewage and modern toilets replaced chamber pots in the 1800's-1900's. Even in 1858 during the Great Stink of London, people still dumped sewage in streets (which Romans heavily punished in their time; street dumping was a christian-era invention), and the smell was so unbearable, the parliament building had to treat its windows and entrances, until sewers were isolated from rivers, and flush-toilets slowly became common into the 1900's. Rome really was a peak of civilization, and we still build things that dont last nearly as long
