Just took the FSOT Exam! I previously took the OMST and have been made a temporary offer for that role, contingent upon successfully completing the background checks and reviews. In this vid, I talk about the new process for FSO application and give some study tips for the FSOT.

I’m a Navy Veteran, current civil servant, and aspiring Office Management Specialist for the foreign Service. In this video I talk about my experience taking the Office Management Specialist Test (OMST) for the Foreign Service. I talk about some study techniques, Mometrix (which is a subscription-based study guide for the exam), and my journey toward getting my dream job to be in the foreign se...

Worship song I composed while deployed to the desert of Iraq in 2008. Despite the hardship, my worship of the One on the Throne didn't cease. Please feel free to share and sing this in your praise and worship services.
Your videos have been so helpful, thanks so much for sharing your journey.
You are so welcome!
Hi Timothy! Congrats on everything. I was just wondering what did you do to prepare for the Case management evaluation? Any studying guides, tools, or resources that you would recommend? Thank you
Thank you Clarisa. This portion is gonna rely primarily on your experience rather than your knowledge of either the State Department or any particular subject. It's an assessment of your judgement and decision-making; think HR related questions and scenarios you'd get asked in an interview; except you'll be writing rather than speaking. To prepare, I suggest practice your writing with proper grammar without Word tools (Use Notepad); and time yourself because it is timed. Pick subjects that you Google or search on CZcams such as Case study scenarios examples for State Foreign Service Exam. I hope this helps and wish you all the best.
Really appreciate you providing your experience. Super helpful for preparation!!!
Update. I passed my exam today. Thank you again for your informative video!! You a real one!
For a second I thought this was an SNL Skit 😂 You look like Kenan Thompson!
Thx for sharing the gems! Much appreciated. Do you know if the FSOT and OMST exams can be taken in the same year?
It has been great following your journey, I passed the OMST exam without studying and it was in early March. I am still under the QEP review, should I prepare for bad news since the 5-8 week estimated response timeline has passed?
Great video. Thank you.
That's interesting you mentioned you listen to audible books. I have been listening to books on Hoopla. It's through the public library. Most books on the reading list weren't available in paperback form but were available through Hoopla. All you need is a library card to set up your account.
Hi Timothy, have you heard back regarding your essay portion?
Hi Timothy, please keep us posted on the outcomes of both the FSOT application and the OMST application! Best of luck to you!
Thanks, did the FSOT prep in Mometrix prepare you? And would it prepare someone else who doesn't have your experience?
It helped me. I recommend it
One question about signing up about test: if I click on the link to sign up, how far out can you sign up? I don't want to click on the link if like I have to take test next week.
If I remember correctly, You can fill out the application now and schedule the test later. You can also schedule the test for a month out, if not more
How did you do both processes? Did you have two separate logins and two separate emails? I am wondering how you are running both processes?
Great question. Same login to PearsonsVue, the option to apply for any and all avenues will be readily available for you to apply. For FSO application, there are 3 windows of opportunity to apply per year. PearsonsVue will have a banner that lets you know when the next window opens to apply and take the FSOT. In short, apply for any and everything that you qualify for. Its a lengthy process so do it as soon as possible. Best of luck to you.
AZ? Retired YN here.
Yep Shipmate! Aviation Yeoman, at your service!
I will reapply! I was 0.25 from making it. For foreign service office management specialist.
Try, try again!!!! 🙏🏿
Congratulations ! Looking forward to hearing about the official offer!!
Thank you. I'll post an update when that happens, for better or for worse.
Wht up AZ?! YN here 🤜🏾🤛🏾
Shipmate….🫡
You are such a great help, thank you and may you be very blessed for helping others.
You are so welcome.
Congratulations!!!!! 🎉
Thank you!!
Greetings! Thank you for this! i tried to look up Job knowledge, English expression, and policy and i am lost. The website is not even giving me an option to subscribe just to purchase the book. is it possible for you to provide the link? Maybe i am just at a wrong site. Thank you in advance and good luck!
Hi, the following link leads to the FSOT course available for subscription on Mometrix. Once you have a subscription, a ton of resources becomes available to prepare you for the exam. I hope this helps. www.mometrix.com/university/fsot/
@@timothyrglenn9545 thank you so much 🙏🏾
congrats! did you say the OMS test includes history/US government?
Thank you! I don’t remember seeing a lot of History. But mostly English and grammar. czcams.com/video/kY9oRTLcUHo/video.htmlsi=XZfK9VGOxe4RW_11
Do you know how often the OMST is offered?
Hi Timothy, did you think about applying to be a foreign service officer (diplomat) in addition to the OMS? I know some OMS candidates also apply to become a FSO to maximize their chances of entering in the foreign service. Congrats on passing the Oral Assessment! I hope the medical and security clearance processes go well for you!
Hi Maxine, I’m scheduled to take the FSOT next month. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to apply while waiting for the lengthy clearance & suitability process to finalize. Thanks for the comment! Are you in the FS?
@@timothyrglenn9545 No, I am not currently in the FS. I also have an MBA degree and work for a defense contractor. I also spent some time in Asia working as an ESL Teacher for three years. I passed the OMST in December and I will take the FSOT in June. Keep us posted on your FSOT application process. I love the fact that FSOT application process is holistic! Good luck to you!
@@maxineh.6763 Thank you. Best of luck to you as well.
Congratulations! Thank you so much for this video! Which parts of the process up to the stage you are at now need to be done in person and stateside?
Thank you!!! Medical clearances for me and my eligible family members, security clearance background check (which typically happens at the same time as medical review), and then Suitability Review. This can take months, possibly longer. It’s a journey
@@timothyrglenn9545 Thank you for responding. It's great that up to the point you are at you were able to do everything virtually. There may be hope for me not having to travel to the US to do this. I wish you much success with the remainder of the journey.
Thank you, I wish all the same to you as well.
Congratulations!! I’m very happy that you posted a follow-up video. Thank you!
Congrats! Do you know if spouses get preferences as well?
Yes, if its an accompanied tour.
Congrats Timothy! Thanks for sharing the info! Are you available to talk briefly offline?
Congratulations!
Thank you!
Thank you and congrats for passing the OMST. best of luck to you,
Thank you
Congratulations Timothy ! Really happy for you. I passed the first step (test) in July, sent my transcripts as well. I hope to hear about the next steps soon.
That's an AZ right there, thank you for your service. AK2 (95-02) here: NATTC MERIDIAN!
Thanks Shipmate. Meridian was where I completed A School training as well. Thank you for your service as well Shipmate
Thank you for this video. Mometrix and the info you provided in this video helped me pass the OMST today.
AWESOME!!! Huge congrats. Check out my follow up vid when you have a minute. More great information about the next steps. czcams.com/video/c4L-wNgCQVI/video.htmlsi=fq4EZ69seU3AXkIv
Follow up vid after passing the Oral Assessment. czcams.com/video/c4L-wNgCQVI/video.htmlsi=fq4EZ69seU3AXkIv
Thank you for this! Life saver!
Glad it helped!
Do you need CAPM or PMP Certificate to get noticed?
Hello, I’m not so sure that it’s a requirement, however I’m sure it could enhance your chances of getting pass the Qualifications Evaluation Panel (QEP). However, Please don’t quote me on any of that and do your research.
Thank you for this video!!!
This is great thank you so much! I've been teaching ESL abroad for 10 years now so I feel pretty good about the grammar section but this is helpful. I'm signing up for Mometrix today. I take the test in 2 weeks.
You’re welcome & best of luck with your test!!!
Thanks so much for your tips. I passed the test today!
Huge Congrats to you!!! 🙌🏾 Be patient because QEP takes a couple of months at least. I just received notification that I’m moving to the next phase which is Oral Assessment. It’s a journey
Yes good to know! I have 1 more year left on my current contract teaching ESL in Oman. I fly back tomorrow. So timing wise with this application and interview process I'm in great shape for things to align pretty well.
Hi Timothy! Are you officially and OMS in the FS? or did you just pass the test?
Not there yet! I just passed the OMST & documenting my journey for better or for worse!
Thank you so much for this valuable information, What Mometrix study guide did you study? or you recomend to study?
Hello Salem, I’d focus on practice test related to English proficiency, situational judgement, job knowledge and grammar.
Thanks so much for this video! I took your advice and subscribed to Mometrix. I really liked how their situational quiz asked for the best option then the least. I took (and passed!!) the exam today and felt well prepared!
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Good luck with your QEP!
Thanks and you're welcome!
Thank you so much for this! I just passed my exam today. Studying on Mometrix was of great help! Looking forward to the next steps.
What Mometrix study guide specificly did you study?
@@salemtrooperthe FSOT Test Prep Course, it costs $60. The OMST is not as hard as the FSOT, so I used this test prep to have a general idea on what the actual test looks like.
Thank you so much for this video. Did you have any trouble creating a profile /applying for the OMS position on Pearson Vue--to register for the exam? Thank you for this video; I plan to take this exam within the next 3 months. So thank you for sharing tips on how to prepare for it.
My pleasure! To answer your question, it wasn’t difficult, it’s just time-consuming. It’s best to have your ducks in a row before you start the app: such as your resume and essay narratives. The system timed out on me while I was in the middle of writing an essay and I lost everything I typed into the system. So, that’s really the only difficult thing.
Great Video! I noticed you didn't mention anything about Job Knowledge? I've enrolled in Mometrix like you did but don't know if it's worth spending time studying if I'm not going for FSOT.
Good point! And you’re right that job knowledge is a section in this exam; however, the situational judgement and grammatical errors questions kind of fall under the umbrella of job knowledge for OMST, if that makes sense. As for FSOT & Mometrix, I’d say it’s worth it unless you know of a better resource or heard of one.
Question: when you finished your test did you get your score right away?/ If not, have you gotten it yet?
Hi Kim, I got my score right there. After finishing the test, the test proctor printed a results paper. It actually only said that I passed without giving me an actual score.
@@timothyrglenn9545 amazing! Thank you! that's scary, but a good thing.
another question: are there US gov/world history? I'm using Mometrix and just trying to figure out what to spend my time on.
@@KimiJernigan I don’t recall questions about history per say. The sections I remember were “situation judgement (scenarios), English proficiency (lots of questions on this), and correcting grammatical errors. I’d focus heavily on these areas in Mometrix
@@timothyrglenn9545 you rock!! Thank you!
Can you take both the FSOT and OMST?
Yes, but that requires 2 different applications and processes.
@@timothyrglenn9545 OK
Hey Timothy! Any updates on your application process for OMS? Thanks for the great video man.
Thank you Joshua! So far, crickets. It’s a long process that can take months, if not more than a year. Don’t quit your day job while you’re applying; don’t apply while you’re unemployed; and most importantly, don’t give up. 🙌🏾
Thank you for this! I have been looking for a REAL person, sharing their REAL experience helps alot! Once I'm ready, I will be looking into applying for OMS, and this helps motivate so much.
My pleasure! 🙏🏿👍🏿
Where are these practice tests? I can't find a SINGLE one? Do you have links? Names of the tests? Thank you! You're the first video I've come across that had info, but I can't find what you're talking about. :) And I've looked all over Mometrix and Google and Reddit. Thank you!
Hi, did you get an subscription set up with Mometrix? I couldn’t take the practice text until after I got a subscription with Mometrix.
@@timothyrglenn9545 Not yet; I'm not going to subscribe unless the test is there. I see lots of other tests (including FSOT), but not the OMST.
@@KatieMcManus completely up to you. I just decided to share what worked for me. Good luck with the exam; I’m sure you’ll do just fine
@@timothyrglenn9545 FYI. I spoke with Mometrix, and they don't have the OMST test (they didn't know what it was). So, not sure what test you took.
@@KatieMcManus not sure if you saw my reply to you in another thread, but this is it: " I honestly can’t remember the name of the tests, but the subjects were things related to Situational Judgment, grammar, English, word definitions, etc."
I cant find the test on Mometrix? Help me out AZ
AZ!🤣 Did you get a subscription with Mometrix? You’d have to get that first to access the practice text.
