Was Mack Rides The Right Choice for Hyperia At Thorpe Park? - Should've Gotten a B&M?
Breaking the record to become the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the UK was an impressive feat for Thorpe Park. Hyperia was the roller coaster we ended up with and it was designed and built by Mack Rides.
Many enthusiasts were sceptical when it was announced and would have rather Thorpe Park had gone with a different manufacturer, such as B&M, Intamin, RMC, Gerstlauer or Vekoma.
In this video I tackle this controversial topic and come to a final conclusion.
What do you think though? was Mack the right choice for Thorpe Park?

Honestly i think Hyperia packs in enough that the ride length isnt an issue i would rather all killer than spots of dead track where not much happens, also you have to think of the throughput an extra 30 seconds of track or whatever could easily add a half hour or an hour to the que times on a busy day
Sounds good but doesnt make it in your top 25? Mmmm?
Bear in mind I've ridden over 1150 coasters, so the top 25 only covers 2% of that! There are many more coasters worthy of being in the top 25, but there are only 25 slots!
@@RollercoasterDavid I get that bud.
I think. you present tracks that are really high and long tracks. have you tried Linnanmäki Taiga? it is in Finland. I can tell you that you can really feel the speed 😊
Of course! I made a whole video review if it! czcams.com/video/iCtY8r8xw0o/video.html
I have done the cu chuallian coaster and loved it and I have never been on a inverted coaster before and I'm a bit scared to go on the na fianna force since there are inversions, do you have any tips or tricks to get over my fear of going upside down on a coaster? 😂❤
Just do it! The first time you invert on na Fianna it doesn't actually feel like you're upside down because the g force pushes you down into your seat even when gravity is going in the other direction. Go ride na Fianna, you'll love it!

It just needed a third more.
A B&M boring and no intense? No, thanks
B&M : too big scale for Thorpe, never understood the uk thoose obsession for this. Intamin: Surprising there was no concept from them, they are more experienced with compact hyper-coasters. maybe they were too busy, expensive, or Thorpe wanted something different.... Now its interesting that the MACK presentation showed much more traditional hypercoter design at the start. It would have been very interesting to see the Internal decision making process from Merlin. we need to remember that most of the decision makers are not Coaster enthusiasts.
I get the feeling they may have gone for the second cheapest option they presented, sort of like how they'd order the second cheapest bottle of wine at a restaurant.
Have you been to powerpark finland
Yes, but a while ago before Pitts special was built. I'd like to go back.
I agree with the comments that Hyperia is much more of an interesting ride than a B&M. However, I have always said the UK lacks a long hyper coaster airtime beauty. A B&M and RMC would have been awesome.
I think Mack was absolutely the best choice B&M retain their status as the industry standard for safety, capacity and reliability, but they seem to be building many new rides that either open with or quickly develop a noticeable rattle. Plus unless they took a much more ambitious mindset into designing the layout, the global amusement community would look at a B&M Hyperia as just another run-of-the-mill Hypercoaster at best Mack offer a similarly high standard of safety and reliability, with maybe a slightly worse capacity compared to B&M. But their design is far more unique and is something that will attract people from around the world just to experience it. Plus the more accommodating restraint system offers a boost to capacity whilst also being accessible to more people
Yes. Mack think outside the box and that's what UK parks are good at. Maybe not the biggest or fastest in the world but they break new ground or do something unexpected. They could have just gone taller and made a generic hyper but instead you got a ride that does stuff nobody expects and that leaves you out of your seat for near half the ride. Absolutely the right choice.
To me it feels like they've only really started thinking outside the box in the last few years with rides like rth
This coaster looks incredible. B&M’s are tried & true, but they’re also very safe, as it pertains to innovating and pushing the envelope. This looks intense, while also being fun, and the level of weightless hang time, Looks spectacularly memorable
Excellent discussion David. Enjoyed it.
Thorpe Park could have gotten a B&M Hyper named ‘Hyperia’ as a clone of either Shambala or Diamondback.
I'm not sure there's enough space for a layout that long
millenium should be WAY higher imo
Why cant we have a billionaire Arab buy Thorpe park and put in a world class ride like velocicoaster or verkoma, not always about height?
If it had a decent layout then I think a mack hyper would have been amazing but we got what we got i guess
B&M hypers have such an uninspired layout
They are doing some more interesting elements now, such as the banked hills on Orion and candymonium
tbh i think they shouldve gone with a rmc since there are no rmcs anywhere near
Walibi Holland isn't that far away!
I was disappointed to see another inversions based ride being proposed at the time of Hyperia's announcement but now thats it's built and running I think it's a great addition to the park. I would love to see a big airtime machine like a B&M hyper be built in the UK but we just don't really have the space at many of our parks for something like.
I think they defo made the right choice, Hyperia will pull guests from all over the world and truly puts TP on the map. I think the next ride should be a B&M hyper to give the park another high capacity thrill machine as well as some floater airtime
much as I'd love it, I think it may be a while until we see another coaster that size at thorpe
@@RollercoasterDavid realistically yes. Maybe something the scale of Goliath at La Ronde would be more in budget?
I dont know how long intamins new track would last but Goliath in Walibi Holland is smooth for its age
True, the only rough intamin I've heard of in recent years was the prototype single rail in Sydney, but apparently the new model is improved - hopefully I'll find out soon
B&M's are pretty bland. RMC's, Mack, Intamin and even Vekoma is where its at right now. Imo they made the right choice! Roll on a Roller Coaster war in the UK it is badly needed... we have been left behind compared to the rest of the world.
Mack is much better because b&m’s are getting rougher, and it would NOT make it the uk’s best coaster
They should have gone with a company that had it running on 7 June. So, Mack's the wrong choice by default.
Then you would have ridden it before me, and we can't have that!
@@RollercoasterDavid you win some, you lose some.
Mack Produkt Perfekt - Find Your Fearless Sausage Roll. BTW 5:53 Hyperion if you wanted to see if we're paying attention.
The most important factor for me is that I can ride B&M hypers all over the place... I can't ride anything quite like Hyperia anywhere else... Yet. Not all B&M hypers are great, and the leaked proposal for Thorpe looked poor. They definitely made the right choice there. Would be interested in seeing any potential Vekoma or Intamin proposal though.
There still isn't a ride that gives the same experience as a b&m hyper in the UK though. Actually adding one to Thorpe could compliment hyperia quite well!
@@RollercoasterDavid Yep, I get that, and it's a valid point for the average British Thorpe guest. But there's 2 within a couple of hours, and more and more brits are travelling for theme parks... However, there isn't a ride in the 'world' that gives the same experience as Hyperia... I'm pleased they cast their net further afield than just the UK. Thorpe seems to be attracting lots of foreign goons now, I can't help but wonder if they'd still be visiting for just another sub standard B&M... 🤔
@@coasterfest Can you name a B&M Hyper that's not great? Sure, Apollos Chariot isn't the best, but it's still a great coaster.
@@Marty_NZI’m probably not the right person to ask that question. I did Shambhala first, so all that followed have been disappointing in comparison. But my least favourite is Silver Star. The design that leaked for the potential B&M here, was very very short for a B&M hyper, looked to have too few airtime hills and too many turnarounds. It looks like it would have been bottom tier for B&M.
@Marty_NZ love how you asked someone to name a b and m hyper that isn't great and then answered your own question there 😂
Thank you for another awesome vid, RCD! Your taste is so similar to mine, and I always find myself agreeing with your opinions. Mack was probably the right call despite Hyperia's reliability, as an RMC would easily have had the same issue, and the other manufactures you listed would probably not have produced a ride as interesting. Vekoma will continually top my hyper wish list until I see and ride one myself, though.
Hopefully we'll see a vekoma hyper soon, maybe if the super boomerang opening at great adventure is a success then six flags will give them the chance
The B&M hyper would've been rougher than Hyperia if B&M continued its recent trend.
The last new one I rode was the one at Lego land Germany and it was fine!
Not a hyper @@RollercoasterDavid
@@TristanCSI know every new hyper is very smooth, and I’ve ridden intimidator, Goliath (sfog) diamondback(not that smooth), Candymonium, and mako.
@@Daniel_Coasters The new b&m at lego germany is still not a hyper.
@@TristanCS I know.
-Should've gotten a B&M? Probably not, B&M hypers usually don't perform well in small footprints. They need a much bigger footprint to be good. Intamin was another option, but I can see why MACK was the one.
They could’ve made something similar to Raging Bull. Plus, it probably didn’t have to fit in this exact plot as far as I know.
@@coasternamegenerator5611 yeah they could have easily made it on a bigger plot
I'm 100% convinced Hyperia is a far more interesting ride than any B&M would have been, especially one of equivalent cost and ride length. But the UK is still wanting an indulgent airtime machine. Your move, Paultons!
The Paultons strata RMC T Rex will be epic!
@@RollercoasterDavid I have heard Paultons RMC rumors, though. No idea how serious they are. One could imagine a Raptor there, for sure.
@RollercoasterDavid There's rumours of a Paultons strata coaster 😂 I highly doubt that, there target audience is geared much furthur towards the younger crowds and family friendly
Be a flex though. Who'd expected a giant RMC at Fun Spot Atlanta? Nothing's off the table anymore.
Due to the small budget given it’s understandable why it’s short but ffs Merlin/thorpe it’s the uk’s tallest coaster in 30 years and Thorpe newest ride in 12 why couldn’t you spend like 5 million more for a longer ride longer train and some rockwork
Ask yourself this: would spending that extra 5 mil have generated enough extra revenue to make it worth it? Definitely not.
@@MondoCoasters I would’ve generated the same amount as hyperia would currently so in other words not really but it could’ve you would never know
Hopefully it'll bring in enough cash that the next coaster they build will be longer
@@RollercoasterDavid if it’s not wildly successful I don’t see Thorpe getting another coaster in another 3-4 years more likely 5-6 which means my delulu dreams may come true and we might get and extended second half I made a concept in planco and it doesn’t seem too impossible
Hyperia cannot have a longer train, Mack engineers said if it had 1 more car (2 rows) it would pull to many forces to be within legal limits
From what I understand Mack's come with a high pricetag too
Hyperia cost 18mil which isn’t too expensive for its size
@@panzerofthelake7661 The cheap price of Hyperia is sus, for context adjusted for inflation Smiler was £24M. I think Mack either want to clone it around the world or just sell more hypers in general and want this to be an advert so offered a discount
lol the Cedar Fair-Zamperla shade
B&M is the only manifacurer that gives the option for a high capacity, at least per train.
Intamin do 4 across seating on Hyperion and skyrush, which means the train can hold 32 people. I think the new mack stryker coasters can also be customised with longer trains
@@RollercoasterDavid Gerstlauer infinity coasters too in theory, but so far... B&M almost consistently provides at least 24/train
Ngl the B&M layout for tp looked so boring and small comparatively. Ik hyperia is short but at least each element pops
Merlin's rides are always way to segregated, if they were willing to have a sprawling layout that twisted around the entire park and interacted with other rides they could fit some serious coasters in, but they are too stubborn to deal with those logistics
They also have quite a few restrictions at thorpe park and Alton towers @@chrisogrady28
Went yesterday on single rider queue twice, took about 40 mins each time and got row 9 on the first one and row 10 on the second. Shame they stopped the water feature at the bottom, just looks like a rusted concrete pit now lol, guess they only used it for opening few days :( Was a great ride though! Love the zero G stall hanging upside down with your arms dangling! Found I was hugging the seat with my legs too. That first drop is pretty amazing and hits pretty hard, can't compare to the front though sadly as I didn't get to experience front rows but from the back it was crazy! Not sure if it beats my favs though of the Smiler and Icon but it's def up there :) Love the colours, might be the odd one out on that but to me it looks classy. Also the ride operators were running it to perfection. Sending trains out quickly and getting everyone on and off efficiently. Great work from Thorpe Park employees!
Itmo it was better then cu chulain
It looks insane- like a cross between maverick and storm runner
They have now adjusted the trim brakes and it does feel as it's less trim and not too noticeable as it's much smoother through those trim brakes and does take a faster pace into the final airtime hill as I had more ejector airtime than 3 weeks before when I ridden it.
That's good to hear!
SAUSAGE ROLL!😂
woah, that's some real Hyperia hating. that drop alone puts the coaster in my top 10. not even mentioning the sausage roll! I also think you were a tad harsh when comparing it to other hyper coasters!!! also the designers probably had good reason to put in trim brakes! they wouldn't be there if they weren't needed for safety. 😃🙃
I didn't think I was being overly harsh, I like to cover both positives and negatives in my reviews. I agree despite it's flaws it's still an amazing coaster.
@@RollercoasterDavid absolutely! I was just having you on mate. I agreed with a lot of what you said and I also love your vids! 😍
Those banked turns seem so compact, does anyone know how many gs it’s pulling?
Finally someone calls out that terrible grammar in the slogan!
Absolutely phenomenal coaster though I’ve got to say the switch between positive and negative Gs does leave me with a little bit of a sore head after I ride it that being said I don’t think any other coaster I’ve been on can compare to it.
Wait till you try El Toro
I'm a lover of hard roller coasters💪Soft roller coasters are for grandma and grandpa💤 but not for me😉 Voltron is terrific and absolutely world class👌
2 rides on it, one mid train but slightly on the back end, 2nd ride backrow, backrow definetly felt more intense, the first drop is crazy closest ive come to a free fall feeling ive had on a coaster
Is an awesome first drop
Rode Hyperia twice today (first times) later in the day in the middle and the back row and the latter ride was so good and both my rides were buttery smooth so maybe I was lucky on what train I got. I ride coasters very often so am somewhat acclimatised to the g forces but the first drop was immense and that outer bank reminded of a gyro swing where you're falling at a weird angle. I loved it. It's not an intense coaster by any means though which I think makes it an excellent coaster to challenge those who have not ridden many. And it's clearly the best in the park. Wish it was twice as long.
I'd still say it's quite an intense coaster, particularly the drop!
Great video David! 👍 We’ve now recovered 😅😵💫
Glad to hear it
