The Legend Of Zelda Taught Me To Be My Own Hero | The Legend Of Zelda Video Essay and Retrospective
It's dangerous to go alone and play every Zelda game but this one.
Today, The (original) Legend Of Zelda is more of an historical document rather than a pleasurable gaming experience, and, to be honest, was the first Zelda game I played in which the word “pleasurable” should never be used. Nevertheless, despite the almost-completely unforgiving nature of this game, you can see with fresh eyes today where this franchise was going to go. The world of Hyrule back then may have looked plain with its simple pixelated art design, but take a step back for a moment, and you can fill all of the gaps and be wowed that the team behind this game pulled off the impossible. This video essay explains why.

Dreams are what you make of them, but how can you make anything of such dreams when the real world is more chaotic than dreams could ever be? The 2022 indie rhythm game Melatonin is a unique little game that plays well as a chillout experience for most gamers, and is deceptively more difficult to play at times than you think at first play through despite the game’s artwork and soundtrack giving...

      I think they both play each other off really well (TOTK is really great), but take away the sky islands and depths, and TOTK could work as a DLC. Thanks for the comment :-)

    Looking back now we can clearly see this game started the woke " games journalism " shit and gamers were not wise to their bias at the time. This game was hyped into the stratosphere because it featured a gay character that was central to the story. I don't like walking simulators but because of the insane hype surrounding this garbo even I got curious enough to give it a go and man was it dogshit!

    Playing Zelda 1 with a walkthrough is like playing Tetris but in super slow mo, like why do it? The point of the game is to explore, and you'd rather follow a set of instructions someone else laid out for you already?

      @armchairbrain Před 2 měsíci

      Agreed, which is why I dig BOTW and TOTK for sharing the first game's freedom. At this point, I don't even need any guide for Tears Of The Kingdom other than my curiosity around the Sky Islands. Thanks for the comment :-)

      @@armchairbrain I personally disagree with the common sentiment that they "Share" the same sense of _Freedom_ They share a similar sense of exploration, but not freedom Zelda 1 has no tutorial, no "Great Plateau" section, 8 nessecary dungeon, and then the final dungeon. Numberous core items that aren't essential. BOTW has numerous optional dungeons and 1 mandatory one. BOTW has some additional restrictions, and directions, such as telling you to go to Kakariko. Wild Era is Open World, Zelda 1 is metroidvania. Both are open, and explorative but are decidedly not the same

This video essay was another passion project for me that I am proud to upload, as STAR FOX 64 was one of my favorite childhood video games and I wanted to explore the game's two strongest elements: its gameplay and its storytelling, both making a combination that helped setting this game ahead of SUPER MARIO 64 and THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME. The FIREWATCH video essay is still in production, and I have *a lot* more videos planned for the Armchair Brain channel in 2024, which I will outline in my first quarterly update on New Year's Day, so stay tuned for future video essays and updates. the entire stakes bit felt like an in the moment justification for why you couldn't invest yourself in a story that just wasn't vibing with you. I mean, what are the stakes in minecraft? or team fortress? hell what about pong, arkanoid, 2048, flappy bird. stakes are there for the narrative, if the narrative doesn't need stakes then there doesn't have to be stakes, that doesn't make the narrative less compelling, otherwise shows like Seinfeld wouldn't exist. you don't have to like every game, creative decisions you disagree with aren't flaws, anymore than ketchup on a steak is a mistake. stake steak stake.

    being mad at people who live in rural areas and red states regardless of their political ideology or how they got their is peak centrist liberal thinking. Fake progressives who are glad when people get hurt by shitty laws regardless of the minorities living in those states that might be harmed or the young people who didn't vote for that who will also be harmed. Having no empathy for workers who were conned by right wingers because they are afraid for their livelyhood is how we have this shitty two party system that hurts everyone.

    • @armchairbrain
      @armchairbrain Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah, unfortunately, this is why it was important to push back on the "Trumpian game" claims that certain gamers were claiming NITW was. Without one party trying to make material conditions better, one blatantly obvious party will exploit their real anger and economic pain by redirecting it towards the "other" (minorities, marginalized groups) and the other one will just put a incremental bandage on said pain. "South Park for Bernie Games" is a more apt description for this game. Thanks again :-)

There's far better games that released even just a couple years after it that are far more influential, inspirational, better written and furthered LGBTQ representation than it ever did.
