Affinity Photo Does What Photoshop Can’t
Affinity Photo offers an exceedingly powerful feature that doesn’t even exist in Photoshop: Live Filters. For those of you who imagine Affinity Photo as something like Photoshop Lite, Live Filters are a legitimate heavyweight.

    this is very cool, I like it... going to be using them more.. thanks! but it's hardly a Photoshop killer.. Still I am forced to use both as photoshop still has many features that Affinity doesn't have or doesn't have as robust versions. ie content aware, AI fills, or robust panoramic etc I really dislike all of the painful legacy crap in photoshop that works like it was a few decades old.. but the new features, the few very robust features, And the ridiculous amount of content for it makes it really hard to drop entirely. I Don't see that changing soon.

      @dekeNow Před dnem

      Affinity does not hold up well in developing raw images, this is true. In fact, that is a deficit I’ll be addressing in a future week. But in many, many other respects, it competes better than anything else I’ve seen.

    • @freetibet1000
      @freetibet1000 Před dnem

      On the raw side of things I agree with you. But I actually turned to Affinity when I discovered how much better it handled really large files! The first save takes awhile, but after that each save (after having made changes) takes a fraction of what PS does. Personally, I turned to Capture One for all my raw storage and development 10 years ago. I’ve been super happy with that change ever since! There are many things that I think are better than Lightroom: Dedicated layers with layer-masking capabilities. The ability to apply same adjustment tools over and over again. The overall colour control and rendering is superior, in my and many other photographers opinion. Even the fairly new Ai selection tools are many times more accurate than those in LR as well, if you’re into those kinds of things? Due to layers you get much better intersection control between different masks, always live and non-destructive to be tweaked later on, if you want. Each layers have an opacity control that give you more possibilities as well. Capture One have given me much less need for a pixel editor such as Photoshop or Affinity when working with photography.

      @@dekeNow are the adjustment layers not very similar? Now I need to go look!

    • @dekeNow
      @dekeNow Před dnem

      @@deadxmouth Adjustment layers drill down a stack of pixels, one pixel at a time (Levels, Curves, etc.), which is computationally simple. (Hence they’ve been around since the early 1990s.) Live Filters compare entire ranges of pixels across entire ranges of layers, for each and every pixel that they see (Gaussian Blur, Unsharp Mask, Shadows/Highlights), which is a much bigger undertaking. Ps accommodates filters dynamically with smart objects, but it cheats by applying them to the composite image which grows the file size and reduces flexibility. Still helpful, but AF Live Filters are better b/c they work so quickly and painlessly that even someone as seasoned as *you* thought they were adjustment layers!

    Hello Deke. I have been dealing with a problem... that cant make it work neither in photoshop or affinity. Maybe you can enlighten us with you wisdom! Many actions we Make have s STOP function to for example use the erase tool to remove undesired object like for example a tripod from a 360 image. But when we want to apply this action to multiple files Using Batch automation or Image Processor (from scripts), the presence of this STOP function in the action messes up everything and the batch or image processing stops. Instead I get a wholly pointless brush that is worse than using a regular brush in quick mask, because in quick mask you can adjust flow rate which is way better than opacity for my money - so there's a step backward. BUT I really expected it to have an edge detect option like we see in lightroom/CR. Otherwise what's the point?? I hate the quick selection brush because it will jump out to areas I never asked for, I don't see why the developers cant see that an edge detecting brush that wont go where you don't tell it to would be the perfect selection tool. After watching a couple of your videos on Affinity photo, I downloaded the trial to see how it was. I can't even use it though. The font and icons are so tiny that I have to lean forward and squint, to read the menu text, and that's with my glasses on! I couldn't find a way to scale the UI in the "settings"/preferences, so I googled it and read a lot of posts on affinity's site, and on Reddit and some other places, where people have been begging them for years for that option. It seems they have it in the mac version but not for Windows. People have been begging them for years and years to fix that but they just ignore them. One guy got a reply from them telling them to just "deal with it". I was hoping it would be good programs and I was considering buying the whole package before the sale ends on August 15'th. But I can't even get a descent feel for it because of the tiny font in the UI, and I'm not willing to lean forward and squint every time I need to read a menu item. I just can't see spending money for a product that the company is so arrogant that they deliberately ignore people pleading with them for years to fix something to make it more usable.

    It’s things like this that annoy me to no end with Adobe. There are comments that are years old in their forums (and feature request forms, which Adobe doesn’t read) where graphic designers (like me) have been asking for real tools that we NEED to do our jobs. One is batch image processing updates. You CANNOT batch process images to PNGs in Photoshop unless you install some 3rd party script or create some finagled Action with dialog boxes and other craziness. WHY?????!!! Photoshop should be able to batch process any image that it can open, allow me to resize them to my specified dimensions, and then export them to any format PS can export to. But you CAN’T!!!! This is a huge part of my workflow at my job. We are paying Adobe to use their software and they are spending time on features like this instead of things that people who do WORK actually need.

    • @dekeNow
      @dekeNow Před dnem

      Automation is one of those areas that gets a bunch of attention (about 15 years ago, now) and then dries up. (There are some recent scripting options-it’s on my list.) I keep hoping Photoshop will make it a mission to push new pro-level technology 24/7. Too much time is spent taking unfinished features from the past and repackaging them so that they’re more discoverable, resulting in bigger fatter unfinished features-that often makes automation that much tougher.
