The foolproof connection is to cut the center out of the conductors and fold about 4 strands from each side both ways through the rope eye and tiewire the bundle. You can stall the tugger before that will come apart

This is a close loop radar. It send a pulse and calculate the reflection time. Knowing the speed of the signal in copper it knows the distance of the reflection.
