Given the events of the movie and the frequent attempts on Padme's life by the Sith (and I just realized Anakin knows this and definitely wouldn't join them because of that), it is very strange that Mace told Anakin to wait in the council room instead of something like "Oh shit, the Sith will try to take down Senator Amidala and probably the whole Senate with them when confronted" and sending Anakin to protect her and get the senators to safety. Probably also telling him to, after finishing that, search for a likely Separatist attempt to take advantage of the situation or to save Palpatine.

Windu: "You are on this council, but we do not grant you the rank of master." Anakin: "I Understand. This is Just, This is Fair. I didn't earn the rank of master anyway." Windu: "Take a seat, young Skywalke- wait what?"

Fairly hard to believe in Mace winning if the Chancellor hadn't wanted to give Anakin the illusion of saving him.

To be fair to Anakin, that original decision WAS bullshit. He had a Padawan and was basically a General during the clone wars. Not granting him the title of Master after killing Doku and effectively ending the war was nothing but insulting.

Hate to be that guy, but the Jedi being branded as traitors and Republic remaining despotic were inevitable by this point. Also, there were other people who would have pulled something like Order 66. (Fett, Tarkin, etc.)

I kinda notice that many of these what ifs, tend to feel a lot more logical than what actually happened. I wonder if that’s because the Prequels kinda had to bend over backwards to conform to the original trilogy plot?
