Quick Energy Saving Tips - Underclocking
This is a very short video and it doesn't contain everything I had planned.
I missed off benchmark figures so here are some below:
FF15 Benchmark
Default - 7606 - ~80fps
1400MHz - 6303 - 60fps
800Mhz - 3642 - 30fps
PCMark
Default 7913
Underclocked 6491
I plan to follow this video up later with a bit more detail since this is only one machine and the 6700K is very long in the tooth now.

Fanless Retro PC - New Home!

Its time to put the fanless windows 98 machine into a case. While not the case I planned or wanted to use time, space and money has meant this will be its home for a little while. Upgrades will be coming at some point such as new RAM an I/O shield, SDD and fanless PSU but I suspect it wont be for a few months. It's the sound blaster it's lacking for me. I had a few ideas how to get one in but not found a good USB one that works with XP yet! Must admit not looked that hard since the built in soundcard is pretty good (just lacks a few features) It's nice to hear other people doing similar things.

    It is cheaper this way. They are not glued with glue, but using an ultrasonic joining method to fuse two parts together. The upside is that the machine does everything. With clips you would have another manual process phase to snap two parts together. And there is then also the problem of improperly joined and/or broken clips which would have to be recycled. There is also the problem with possibility of resonance at some volume intensities and frequencies when using clips. So, from manufacturing perspective, this is an excellent choice. But, I concur with you on all the right to repair points.

  • @user-fl4ok8mb5t
    @user-fl4ok8mb5t Před 13 dny

    gaming doesn't tell the differences. you have to do some stress tests, like 'stress FPU' in AIDA64 for CPU, and FurMark for GPU. I did it with my 5700GE and 5700G, the GE chip only consumes about 58 watts(with both stress tests on), and the G one consumes about 100 watts(only stress FPU) and over 150 watts under two stress tests.

      @@AvenyetsTechWorkshop There must be some reason for AMD to produce those GE CPUs. I'm kind of interested in the difference between the GE unit and the G unit at 35W setting. unfortunately, my motherboard doesn't have those features. I purchased the GE unit only for my mini PC.

    • @AvenyetsTechWorkshop
      @AvenyetsTechWorkshop Před 13 dny

      @@user-fl4ok8mb5t it used to be more important but the way modern CPUs handle the turbo speed they will generally just boost until they need to cool. The only real difference is the base clock which is the real 35W difference. So if you turned off the boost on both CPUs you would then see a difference. Though in this case the G uses about 45 watts it's only really the 4700G that would use 65 watt. Of course mobile processors are the expectation since they can be set to have a power limit. It's all rather confusing and the spec sheets don't help.

    • @user-fl4ok8mb5t
      @user-fl4ok8mb5t Před 12 dny

      @@AvenyetsTechWorkshop yeah, 8 core CPUs take more power that is reasonable. but I also have a few 5650GE chips, they use as much power as the 5700GE. 35~42 TDP, 58 watts.

    • @AvenyetsTechWorkshop
      @AvenyetsTechWorkshop Před 12 dny

      This could be down to the good old silicon lottery. For example on passmark the 4300ge scores more than the standard g since they are most likely binned parts to hit that 35 watt. But this doesn't mean they all will. So it's perfectly feasible to have 8 core parts out there in the same family that can perform better per watt than the lower core version. Without a large sample size it's difficult to know for certain (overclockers UK for example charge a premium for better binned parts but they have enough stock to test). The TDP is only a guide and it's really just marketing at this point. Undervolting can also achieve some amazing results but that's another topic.

      Honestly it depends on your budget. Any card will be suitable. It will bottleneck at high frame rates in very modern games (regardless or GPU uses) but at 60FPS it should not bottleneck. Budget friendly cards like a 3050, 3060 or 4060 would work fine but really the sky is the limit the CPU will work perfectly fine with a RTX 4090 Ti but it would bottleneck at 60fps+ (also there might be a bottleneck with PCI-e lanes).

    I also have a set of these speakers and recently the Left channel stopped working. I spent several minutes trying to locate the screws and eventually googled disassembly. I followed your video first. Thank you. I managed to get mine apart without much damage. clearly less glue was used on mine. I removed the grilles just as you did and ran a scalpel/xacto knife across the top of each speaker between the back casing and the front casing. Then I inserted a small flat-blade screwdriver in at one corner and levered it gently until there was a pop. I was able to push the blade in a little bit further and carefully levered one corner apart. I inserted a flat tool like a spudger into the gap and very gently eased it downwards and the glue yielded a little at a time. I now have both of the units apart and I will be trying to diagnose the fault in order to repair it. I also bought new speakers (USB powered - Aaaargh!) and a USB wall wart. Hopefully I can get these Logitech speakers working again. I do have power and the right speaker is fine. Thank you again for the tip to open the casing.

    I really wish for a new generation of 75W cards that could run passive. I'd love to have a new Palit KalmX. Some say the rumoured upcoming cut-down version of the RTX 3050 might be able to run on board power alone and might thus be cool enough to be built passively. It's a bit sad the Radeon RX 6400 has no passive version.

    • @AvenyetsTechWorkshop

      The 6400 could be done but the card is not much better than the 1650. I possible 4050 seems feasible since the 4xxx series seems to be returning to the old tdp format. But we have possible "super" versions soon so don't hold your breath. The 75 watt class seems to be a bit of a no show of late I don't think the performance per watt has been good enough to replace it yet. But maybe next gen both camps have stuff in the mobile field that have potential.

    I got one in 2020 for $250 on craigslist with a 1tb sata m.2 and 32gb of 2400mhz vengeance. Pretty much just used it for a badass smart tv controller and home media server but it does actually game at about a ps3 level of power if you can stand the fan noise. Skyrim at 720p medium upscaled to 1080p is definitely playable around 30-40fps. I finally went crazy with a dremel and soldering iron and did a heatsink mod like you'll find on reddit and what not. Never goes above 65C in games now, no throttling and is much quieter. Also picked up a 16gb kit of 3000mhz cl18 ram from amazon the other day just to see if it would make any difference. It didn't but I think I'll keep the faster stuff rather than go for more but slower ram. It was only like $35 for 16gb. If you can find a deal on a kitted out one, I still think they're cool but a newer minisforum is probably waaay better performance/$.

      It will run better than this. It should run in medium (might have to be below 1080p) this issue with this laptop was more the CPU than GPU. Since the steam deck can run you might be surprised.

      I think you might be limited to 720p if you are after 60fps. for 30fps you should be able to handle it on medium. This game runs on the steamdeck so it should perform ok. The CPU might have some issues in some areas in Act 3 though. But expect the performance to be worse than whats in this video due to the lower specs and this video is 3 years old.

    I have a chinese "jegy" variant of the card but for some reasons it crashes drivers all the time when gaming, ONLY when gaming, never reached over 60 degrees and it can stand furmark for over 6 hours and more without errors or crashes. Have you ever heard something of this variant or how to stabilise it?

      Works rather well on this kind of spec. The steam deck is the same spec so at 720p medium is very feasible.

    I gave you a thumbs up but I disagree with your assessments. The one saving grace with the Skull Canyon NUC is its got thunderbolt 3.0 and I have owned it since launch date in Australia. Hook it up with any EGPU and I think the NUC is back in business as the egpu market has taken a dive since lots of Chinese companies entered. Affordable pricing provided if you got an old desktop GPU lying around. Gonna put a 1660TI or above. Waiting for the egpu for testing.

      I would not attempt it with this setup. While the gpu should be able to handle 720p on medium the CPU is going to cause issues. You need at least a 6xxx desktop quad core and a GT1030 or GTX1050.

      This was patch 1 compared to release so 3 years difference. I can't get 4k but I can get 1440 without too much issues (few drops here and there). Turn off some post processing and use double buffering. Some of the settings absolutely tank performance. This seems to vary greatly between card generations and drivers.

      I'm not 100% sure I have not been able to download the latest version yet. It runs in the steam deck well which is a very similar spec. So it should run at 720p. Remember if you buy it via steam you can always refund if it doesn't run.

      @@AvenyetsTechWorkshop However a pretty good card for what it is. I had a GT 710 before in my PC, which is so terrible, I wouldn't even call it a GPU. Since I'm limited by my PSU and it was too difficult for me to replace it, I replaced the GT 710 with a Zotac GT 1030, DDR5. I had some Indie 3D game that rarely hit the 20 FPS at 1024x768 with the 710, with the 1030 and the same settings I get ~60 FPS. Would even get some FPS more, if I try it again with my new 144hz screen.

    • @AvenyetsTechWorkshop
      @AvenyetsTechWorkshop Před 10 měsíci

      I have not got that CPU. But if you have a fan that pushes air down and over the board I can't see any issues with that CPU. If you are concerned you can grab some super cheap mini heat sinks and stick them on with thermal glue or pads.

I thought about getting heat sinks, however, Mike's unboxing on video "Adding Heatsinks To Motherboard VRM & Chokes Is It Worth It?" added to this exact motherboard and couldn't get much difference in it but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try anyway. It just got me worried before buying the CPU to know if this motherboard can handle it because, Tom's Hardware (Four Cheap Micro ATX B550 Motherboards Tested: Low Price, Big Value?) tested with a 3900X (105W) and it throttled.

    The 4350GE support ECC memory, so that might be the intended market for this. And of course it requires less cooling thanks to the lower TDP.
