History Revealed: Heart of the Heartland
The Heart of the Heartland: Norwegian American Community in the Twin Cities
David C. Mauk
History Revealed Special Event
Program Date: Thursday, February 15, 2024
In partnership with the East Side Freedom Library, Ramsey County Libraries and Norway House
A look at the Norwegian American community of Minneapolis-St. Paul and its deep and complex role in the economic, political, and cultural life of the Twin Cities over more than 170 years.
Since the earliest days of European settlement in the region, tens of thousands of Norwegians have found their way to Minnesota. Many early arrivals settled in the cities, while others who initially chose the countryside departed for urban settings after they had become accustomed to the ways of their adopted home. The growing Twin Cities became home to Norwegian immigrants and their migrating compatriots alike.
These Norwegian Americans took up employment in a range of fields. They also assembled in churches and charitable organizations, carrying on homeland traditions even as they took on prominent roles in the larger urban community. Minnesotans of Norwegian descent in the twenty-first century may not speak their ancestral tongue, but they lovingly uphold many cultural practices of their ancestral home.
David C. Mauk is the author of The Colony that Rose from the Sea: Norwegian Maritime Migration and Community in Brooklyn, 1850-1910 and numerous articles about Norwegian American ethnicity. Now retired, he taught American studies at the University of Oslo.

It is incredible that in the 21st century, Lewis' readers feel that the author is a misanthrope, when from a distance - I am from Venezuela and I finished reading the novel - it is perfectly clear how petty the Yankee can be.

Thanks for this! Under the pinched circumstances--less than an hour--you do a great job of covering many aspects of his career as well as his major works and a few of his minor ones. This is very helpful to me. I'd note that, with respect to the way topical (e.g. sociological/cultural, political, scientific, historical) interests of their day drove so much of their work, Lewis reminds me a lot of his contemporaries Upton Sinclair and, though across the sea and writing in a different vein, HG Wells. Perhaps one reason he isn't read as much today is because his work is so closely connected to the 1920s? (To me, Sinclair's writing about sex and sexual desire in Babbit and Main Street feels constrained. But the mores and taboos of mainstream publishing were much more conservative then, and so it's likely that he had to tread lightly where that was concerned.) His work feels a little dusty, but it is good and I agree that Lewis deserves continued readership. Mr Coleman does a good job emphasizing how many of Lewis's books' core themes still resonate today. Only thing I would've liked to know a little more of was who Lewis was as a person--what was his personality like? This is touched on here and there, but not enough to give me a sense on the sort of man he was. I'll definitely be reading his Nobel Prize speech though. Thanks for the thoughtful overview and discussion!!

This was great! So informative and fun. It is February 4th, 2022 about 6 mos. since moving back to St. Paul after 20 years away and I've been trying to get hikes in in all my favorite parks and places. Afton, Willie O'Brien, Como, The Fish Sunflower fields etc. I was searching for a Donna Nauman which brought me here. She counseled me once through Metro East back in the 90's and we talked then about how great it was to hike and commune with and in nature. I don't think this is the same person but a great bit of synchronicity anyway! Happy New Year and Happy Hiking all! Perhaps I'll join you one day ;) Oh and I keep seeing wild turkeys everywhere!
