The Padua Theatre
Located in Brunswick, the Padua was a beautiful, art deco style theatre. It was built and operated by Hoyts during the golden era of cinema. It was opened to much fanfare on 24th July 1937, screening an Errol Flynn movie, the Charge of the Light Brigade.
It featured a Hammond electric organ and bandstand which were on a revolving stage. When the stage moved, it revealed the screen. Stage shows also featured as part of the film programme.
The Padua was also a paragon of modernity, complete with a streamlined egg shaped ticket office, footwarmers, valet parking and even a crying room for babies.
As with all the cinemas of this era, the Padua suffered when TV came along, so much so that it was closed by Hoyts in June 1968. The property was sold, and leased to Tony and Franco Zeccola. Its superb Art Deco interior was gutted, and they reopened it in August 1969 as the Metropolitan, screening Italian films. It continued to operate until December 1981.
The building then sat vacant. It fell into disrepair and was vandalised. Sadly, it was demolished in February 1982. Non-descript shops, were built on the site, replacing the imposing Streamline Moderne edifice that was the Padua.

Who exactly was swinging ? A few teenagers and young capitalists on the make .
People were well dressed, far more dignified. When i was a kid in the 70s my Mum would take me in on the train from Auburn Station and we'd come out Flinders Street via the Degrave Street subway. There was always a man in a wheelchair selling the Sun or the Herald. From there, it was three arcades two Burke street Myers. . These days one of them is gone. I loved that walk. Lunch was at the Coles Cafeteria or Myers, but Coles was famous with the ladies in yellow uniforms and tiaras. Australia was a much more cohesive society then. Thats the nicest way i can put it.
Essa era Londres que a gente amava e gostava de seguir a moda deles. Não tenho nenhum interesse em visitas Londres, Paris , Girona na Espanha . Todas perderam o glamor da autenticidade antiga 😊
I was 6 and my Nana would take us to Meyers, where we had meat pie and chips in the cafeteria. Then run amock outta control. Toys were a great pacifier. Then, on Saturday, avo Carlton with Uncle Joe and Nana, but Barrassi was our favourite player. When he came to Carlton in 67, my uncle cried, "There is a God." Oh, I lived in Jacana then.

Ha! The invention of the teenager....making consumer slaves out of the impressionable and easily led. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the music of my own teens around 1990 and for the 60's generation, it was needed after the war and conscription, but not as liberating as many think.
Watching here

Ah my beautiful Melbourne, once so great, now so horrible. Why did we let it happen?
Love this music!!
Full of English and Irish invaders those days whinging pommes. Look at the way they are dressed very British.
Beautiful video 🙏❤️ seeing early clips confirms for me our history is one big fat lie. No way can some of those structures be built in horse & buggy days
Where did our freedom go?
Never really free in any organised society, just degrees of restriction and rules. Arguably the nanny state mentality of many politicians is going too far?
One day, we may see this restored to full HD with A.I....
No one screams ,, free Palestine,,
Before multiculturalism
Not really as most of the Europeans are immigrants in Australia from the UK and Ireland and even today so many expats in Australia. Loads of racism brought from England to Australia.
@@marthasheilds2446 multiculturalism means different cultures. English, Irish are our people and culture
Lunch in the Coles cafeteria and the Myers windows displays later that night, was a Christmas treat for the kids for many years back then.
