I Survived MOUNT KINABALU | Full Journey & Experience August 2023
This is the adventure of our 2D1N Mount Kinabalu challenge on August 18, 2023. One of the hardest things I've done in life. Catch a glimpse of what it is really like climbing Mount Kinabalu and how we struggled through freezing cold conditions. Like many who have climbed Mount Kinabalu has said before, 'Your mind must be stronger than your body.'
On the link below, I reflected on the whole experience and how I would prepare for Mount Kinabalu in the future, including training, packing, and recovery.
Mount Kinabalu Reflection:
yan2journal.wordpress.com/2023/08/30/experiencing-mt-kinabalu-in-poor-weather/
I encourage everyone who is able to, especially Malaysians, to go for the experience. There is much to be learned on a personal level from Mount Kinabalu.
If you haven't, go for it!
If you have, how was your experience?

    Tks for the video- helpful for me get a sense of the terrain. Can I check for the climb to the summit, can you leave your main backpack at the dorm and just pack a smaller bag up for summit climb And on descent, collect the bigger backpack at the dorm before going all the way down? Tks

      Thank you, glad to hear that! Yes, you can leave your main backpack at the rest house. The summit attack is 2.30am. Ideally, you will be back at the rest house by 9.30am for breakfast. Checkout time is at 10.30am. For the summit attack, I only brought snacks, water, raincoat, and personal belongings. Happy climbing!

    Thanks for the video and congratulations on the achievement! I will be climbing soon hence this is very inspirational. A few questions> 1. Did you hire a porter service? 2. How much water did you bring up for the climb? 3. Do you have to bring your passport or ID with you during the climb? 4. did you take altitude sickness medication and if you did, did it help? 5. if you could give one lesson learnt/advise from this trip what would it be?

      I'd like to share my experience. I climbed kinabalu in March 2022. 1. Hiring a porter cost you RM 14 per KG, I would advise climb with minimal gear. 2. I bring only 1 water bottle and it is not enough! But each pondok got untreated water source, drink at your own risk. 3. We only need identification card at the registration. Once they gave you the tag you're good. 4. I do actually take altitude sickness pills, and it helpt me little just to get through the night. 5. 1 thing that i remember the most is the cold while summit attack. It's almost unbearable and mind you that I'm wearing 4 layers. Base layer, mid layer warmer decathlon, down jacket from uniqlo and outer shell jacket. if you're climbing with the same condition as this video, those rope are going to be wet. Bring extra glove if possible otherwise It would be like holding ice for the rest of those summit attack.

      @@blackapek9228 thank you for your sharing your invaluable experience! 2. Regarding water. How many litres would you suggest? I heard they provide 500ml with the lunch pack. I am not planning to drink the untreated water as I'm afraid I'll get sick. I read it can be treated using tablets but I guess it's the last resource. I'm also trying to carry less weight uphill 😅 I'll take note of your advise on the gloves. I have a water resistant pair but if it gets soaked through it's always good to have a back up! I shall hope and pray for good weather. Unfortunately that's not something we can predict.

    • @YanYan-fj6sv
      @YanYan-fj6sv Před měsícem

      Hi @labby6316, not sure if you have already climbed Mt Kinabalu! 1. We did not hire a porter and limited our pack to 6kg. It was manageable. 2. For me, 1.5L of water was enough to last me through almost 8 hours of climb to Panalaban resthouse. I recently climbed Mt Kinabalu a second time. With good weather and a new strategy, we arrived at the resthouse in 5 hours. 1L of water was enough for me. 4. Altitude sickness pills helped my husband. He had headaches and nausea during the first climb. But with the second climb, he was fine. 5. About the cold in the summit attack, what kept me warm was a cheap disposable raincoat because of its plastic insulation properties. About the gloves, I actually wore plastic disposable gloves as added insulation. But still, my hands got wet. Extra gloves would definitely be helpful. The greatest lesson I learned and still practice when hiking today is really to go at your own pace. Find a sweet pace, and keep to it. Don't worry about catching up with others and don't stop, just keep going. It's something we can keep doing even when we feel like giving up.

      Thank you! We started seriously training only 1.5 months before. Our training was climbing 250 steps up and down 5 times each session. We did so 3 times a week on alternate days. Other than that, we went for 3 hour round-trip hikes once a month, 4 months before our climb. Do you plan to climb Mt. Kinabalu? 😊

    • @YanYan-fj6sv
      @YanYan-fj6sv Před 6 měsíci

      For us, the hard part going down was the slippery rocks so we had to be extra careful. We each used 2 hiking poles to support our weight coming down and it helped a lot. The journey back to Timpohon Gate does feel like a long one and we just need to persevere until the end.

    Online platforms are made available for free, if the school administration would apply for it and make it available to the teachers. School management could provide support, synergies resources, rather than relying on teachers to register and find their own online platforms, because some of these platforms do not recognise teachers.
